If you want to be the kind of engineer that implements other engineer's ideas then, by all means, blow off your math classes. But if you want to be someone who your peers turn to when they need help, do yourself a favor and learn the math.

All of the engineering sciences are founded on math (this is espescially true of computer science). If you can out code your instructors, that means you can probably out math them too. What you are interpreting as an inability to memorize functions, is probably really just disinterest.

This disinterest may stem from a feeling that what you are studying has little utility, it may stem from a personal dislike of an instructor, it may stem from the notion that math geeks are all squares and smell funny.

Whatever the reason, you need to get past it. A thorough understanding of the math behind engineering will make your life MUCH easier on down the road.

If the COMET was a big ball of rock it would just be a matter of attaching to it and then pushing it where it needs to go. But with the comet being in essence a big pile of sand, it would be much more difficult to move around with our current technology. (I'm basing this on the idea that as soon as we start pushing it, it will start coming apart)

Imagine this instead. Your neighbor just bought a cordless phone setup. You go out and buy a replacement handset and set it to the same frequency as his. Are you then morally or legally allowed to make calls on his phone? I say no.

Part of the problem here is that driving to work is inherently dangerous and risky. There is no way you will ever remove all of the risk -- and because of this there will be future accidents and loss of life while we commute. The men and women who volunteer to do this are extremely courageous individuals that should be honored and thanked many times over. Each time a car pulls out of a driveway, there are a million ways something can go wrong yet only one way everything can go perfectly. NASA, along with the government and general public, must understand that although the risks associated with driving to work are huge, the potential rewards are far greater. Hopefully our government will give GM/Ford the funding needed to develop a better way for people to drive to work. Until that time, we must realize that there are risks associated with commuting but we must keep aiming for the stars because, in the long run, humanity stands to gain far more than the risks from occasional loss of life that occur when something goes horribly wrong.
