  1. Re:Harder #s? on Firefox Breaks 50,000,000 Barrier · · Score: 1

    Here ya go: One of my websites (I'm not posting a link because I'm not doing this to advertise my site :P) is about as non-geeky as it gets, deals with historical stuff, has a target audience who know more about old cars and books than computers and are on average probably well over 50 - it's not a major traffic magnet but still gets several hundred hits per day, so it's probably a fair demographic sample of Joe Sixpack net users. Current stats for April:
    * IE 82.2%
    * Firefox 8.5%
    * Mozilla 2.4%
    * Netscape 1.9%
    * Others

    For comparison, here are the numbers for April 04...
    * IE 91.2%
    * Mozilla 3.6%
    * Netscape 2%
    * All the rest

    ...and October 04.
    * IE 85.7%
    * Mozilla 7.5%
    * Netscape 2.3%
    * Firefox 0.7%
    * Others

    So there. Totally unscientific, but I can see a very noticeable rise in Firefox usage among the non-geeky web population.

    The only Cray-I I've ever seen up close is the one at Deutsches Museum in Munich. It's actually quite comfortable to sit on, and the insides (at least right behind the panels, some of which have been replaced with clear plastic sheets) seem to contain nothing mecchanical (here's a photo of the museum's Cray). Might get a bit warm if you sit on tere while it's powered on, though :p

  6. 110/220V on What Was Your Worst Computer Accident? · · Score: 2, Interesting

    Couple of years ago, I worked for a company that constantly shipped machines between the LA and Germany offices. Needless to say, nobody ever checked the PSU settings before plugging in a machine (Germany runs on 220VAC) - not a problem for the LA guys because a 220V PSU that gets only 110V will simply not do very much, but we on the German side had lots of blown fuses and burnt-out PSUs to deal with.

    Usual procedure was to set up the machines in the lab/training room to check the configuration before moving them to active duty (which had the added benefit that the occasional blown fuse would only affect the training room where usually nobody was working).

    The real fun started when one day I set up a machine in the server room without checking the PSU setting. Of course, everythig in the server room is connected to a UPS, and the UPS kept supplying power to the poor PSU without even thinking about blowing a fuse...and supplying...and supplying...I noticed something was very wrong when the room started filling with blue smoke and molten plastic dripped from the machine's case. Always made sure to check every single PSU after that :p
