  5. Just in case.. on Month of PHP Bugs Has Begun · · Score: 3, Interesting

To clarify, note that these bugs are related to the PHP core, not the language itself which may result in insecure applications. The statement that 8 security vulnerabilities in PHP and PHP related software is not referring to PHP software such as Wordpress. I mean seriously, I think I saw my dog hacking together a blog the other day using PHP. Everyone uses the language and not everyone has the background to know what they should and shouldn't be doing. In addition to its popularity, the language and its "libraries" make it easy for untrained coders to leave gapping holes in the code. Don't get me wrong, I love PHP (to an extend), I make a living out of it but any attempt at fixing "PHP related software" directly (ie: wordpress, phpbb, oscommerce, etc) would take more than a month.

What distro are they going to use? As many as financially feasible? I can hear the Gentoo hordes clamouring already.

Does it matter? I'm guessing they'll choose the distro that is easiest for customers to relate to and the one that minimizes the need for Dell support.

How old will this distro be?

How old is their currently bundled version of Windows? At plain sight it seems like it would be easier for them to bundle an up to date distro than it is to bundle an up to date Windows. They control the hardware and Linux is available quiet easily. Not to mention Dell is amazingly good at changing specs and offerings on the fly.

How do I know it's been set up correctly?

It will work out of the box with all the hardware they provide? How do you know they setup Windows correctly?

What if I want a BSD?

    Then you install one.

Do we really want to let people loose on Linux who can't [be bothered to] install it themselves?

Do we really want to continue letting people loose on Windows? Look where that has gotten us.

I use Linux more or less exclusively, but I'd never buy a machine with it preinstalled.

This move is not for you nor I. This is for people who don't want to bother with installing an OS and want their systems free from the MS tax. Bundling of Windows with new machines is one of the top reasons why MS has a monopoly in the desktop. People don't know there are alternatives. The plain fact that there may be an extra drop-down menu option for Linux is going to do wonders for consumers and the industry in general.

I won't trust you. As a matter a fact, you are straight out lying. I am married to a Belgian woman, and been to Belgium several times, and I can tell you from personal experience that they do have excellent food beyond "Ham and fries with cheese". Most of the food I tried was French influenced, cooked with a lot of wine, red and white meats, sea food, etc. Delicious stuff. I don't think one has to even mention their world renown deserts (chocolate, waffles) and beers.

That history of occupation you mentioned influenced Belgian cuisine a lot. It has allowed it to offer a magnificent mix of tastes from that part of Europe while still keeping a Belgian signature on the dishes. If there is one thing Belgians know how to do, it is eat and drink. Belgium cuisine may not be the most famous in the world but it is not something to sniff at, it is quiet good.

What has changed since the last iteration of brown matter MS flicked at us? Is this really the best Windows version ever? Will people finally wake up and smell the poop MS packages? Will the masses give Linux/OSX a "serious" try? Will we be here x number years from now arguing about how people should stick with Vista instead of upgrading to MS's new Windows 2k10?
