Uhm, this isn't that new. The A980 has been available for a while now.

That was a few years ago. Current packet writing software will let you delete files off CD-RW discs directly and you will reclaim the space from the deleted files immediately.

  3. ECS also makes real notebooks on Buying a Small, Light Linux Notebook Computer? · · Score: 1

ECS has recently started selling true notebooks (i.e. based around low powered CPU's and with an internal battery) outside of Taiwan. They have one model that look exactly like the Desknote models, but have an internal battery, PC Card slot, and higher resolution LCD displays. Other models are comparable featurewise to what other manufacturers offer, but come at a lower cost, and without Windows bundled.

CD-ROM drive prices fell very quickly at that time, hence the rapid adoption.

In 1991 I bought a Sony CD-ROM drive with a bunch of bundled games and Microsoft Bookshelf 1991 for $700. And I thought it was incredibly cheap.

The year after that I got a SCSI NEC MultiSpin 2X drive also for $700.

Last week I got an ASUS 52X for $15.

Actually, disabling the "Automatically check..." option only makes it not automatically open the IE update page, it still phones home. The easiest way is to just filter out that particular URL in the Internet sharing program...

For me I just filter out all *.cab URL's, which takes care of all the Microsoft auto-updates.

Avance Logic merged with Realtek. The Realtek ALC650 is what's commonly known as the Avance Logic AC97. A.K.A. Garbage.

I guess for cost cutting reasons most of the newer motherboards now come with this onboard.

  7. Re:Chinese on Fewer Employees + Same Work = Higher Productivity · · Score: 1

Indeed, you can't take a Chinese word that's composed of multiple characters and split them up into individual characters and take the meanings of the characters separately.

The Chinese characters "wei ji" as described on that website does mean crisis, but the word for opportunity is actually "ji hui". "Wei" by itself is a root word for danger, but it's not used alone. "Ji" by itself doesn't mean anything.

In fact, I've never heard of this crisis/opportunity expression before, and without looking at that website I wouldn't have been able to figure out what words this expression refers to.

  8. Re:The pictures on the Oslo on New Palm Pictures? · · Score: 2, Informative

The blurred out area besides the word Oslo is a serial number. I saw the same picture but with the serial number intact on several Chinese websites last week, and was wondering why there had been no mention of it at all on the English websites.

  9. Few people use Asian versions anyway... on Adobe Considers Withdrawing from Asian Markets · · Score: 1

Has anyone actually tried using localized Adobe products with the localized menus?! They're completely impossible to understand, and anyone who has worked with any of these programs since the older versions are more likely to continue to use the English language versions than the localized versions with the garbage translations.

Microsoft's localized programs still have the same keyboard shortcuts as the English version, so if you can't figure out the menu item for something, you can just use the keyboard shortcut if you remember that. Adobe programs force you to use the menus. (No keyboard shortcuts at all.)

  10. Check specs before buying on What Do You Think of ASUS Laptops? · · Score: 1

Be careful when shopping for ASUS notebooks. The model numbers (B1000, A1000, etc.) only describes the outer appearance of the notebooks. They append letters to the model numbers to denote the chipset and other features.

The B1000 is new so there's probably only one model at this point though.
