Thank you for giving "Herzog Zwei" a name-check -it's often overlooked when people talk about the first RTS type of games. I spent hours and hours playing that game on the Genesis. So good.

TiVo Will Die

I love my Tivo -- when it's working. But it mostly doesn't because it's really a nasty piece of engineering.
You've got to be kidding -- my first generation Sony Tivo has been running for three years straight now without a single glitch. I'd say it's one of the best designed, most reliable products I've ever owned, bar none. In my experience, I see TiVo as glowing testament and proof-of-concept to/of the feasibility of user firendly, linux powered consumer devices.
I don't know if you got a lemon, or what, but I do know that your experience is *not* the norm given the (many) people I've talked to that absolutely love their TiVo.
The main feature I miss in GarageBand is "tap tempo", which is to say, you can tap a key on the keyboard in a 1... 2... 3... 4... rhythm and the software will extrapolate and average the tempo from your tapping. Does anyone have any recommendations for any little utilities that might offer this?
I can vouch for that M-Audio USB Uno; it works great and could not be simpler to set up. Just make sure to download the newest OS X drivers as in the box it may come with a bunch of OS 9 stuff that won't mean anything to GarageBand.
After installing the drivers, though, it's completely plug and play, the best MIDI experience I've ever had.
iTunes 4 LAN music sharing ability basically puts all local music in one pot, for listening if not burning... and it's free. Apparently this feature is extremely popular on college campuses right now.
Ah, I wish I was still in college, as I'd love to been able to peruse my classmate's music libraries. At the very least it would have made it way easier to differentiate between the cute girls, and the cute girls with really good taste in music.
Yeah, that's not actually... true. I called Apple a couple months ago about a really odd password problem with Mac OS X Server (you could log in as any user on my server by entering a blank password!), and while they did charge me, it was only $100.
Now here's $100 worth of secret, annoyingly undocumented Mac OS X Server information: you can use the password of an Admin account to log in via AFP as any user on the system. For example, if one of your admin passwords is "fl0nk", you could use "fl0nk" as the password to test any user on the system.
So make sure your Admin passwords are strong! And secret! And not blank!
what does iTunes do if you tell it to automatically RIP and eject CD's and you put CD's in multiple drives?
I did this with a couple Sony Firewire CD-R drives when I was ripping my 1,000+ CD collection. iTunes will dutifully lookup and rip one CD after the other after the other, and all you need to do is keep all the drives full. All having three drives means is that you have to babysit the process 1/3 of the time you would with one drive. This is the way to go, I think.
It's the best product out there right now. It wins on:
*ease of use (syncs and charges effortlessly with mac/pc)
* player UI (you can find any one of 10,000 songs in less than 10 seconds, while driving... so I hear)
* ease of music procurement (iTunes is a great mpeg3/mpeg4 ripper and it also hooks into the very good iTunes Music Store)
*good looks (other mp3 players look like a robot's diseased ear that fell off)
* cool accessories (there's a ton of iPod goodies out there, from car chargers to boom boxes to FR transmitters to...)
Just my opinions, but sometimes things do well in the market not only because of marketing, but also due to actual quality and resultant word of mouth.
Yeah, seriously. Apple's AAC "protected" files were the only DRM encoded media I bought last year, and probably the only DRM media most people bought last year, and it doesn't even get name-checked? Sloppy.
For most people, I think the more restrictive DRM schemes will be like the advertising monsters of Springfield -- "just don't look, just don't look". Nobody liked DiVX (the circuit city kind) and it went away.
A rat done bit my sister Nell. (with Whitey on the moon) Her face and arms began to swell. (and Whitey's on the moon) I can't pay no doctor bill. the iTMS is either a loss leader or barely breaks even
That's only true at the current economy of scale; if they crank up the units (songs) sold, the capacity for profit is much, much greater. Making deals with other companies will increase the number of iTunes customers.
Also I can't wait to see what the "real" experimental electronic musicians do when they get their hands on it and start deconstructing the fuck out of it!
I hope it's Applescriptable. That would be really really cool. You could write scripts to grab sounds and assemble music programatically...
Fela Kuti, too.
Good stuff.

Sega Saturn and the Sega Dreamcast.
And the Sega 32X.. Lesson learned: Do not invest in Sega, but you can certainly buy their gear!!
You would consider the examples of Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast and Sega 32X to be examples of what gear one should buy?

Don't worry; with thinking like that, he won't have a girlfriend for too much longer.
