Running open linux on my 4015 cds. Everything works. Sound, X, PCMCIA modem (sorta) Only thing that doesnt work is my CBE10/100 ethernet card and theres work in progress on that. The newer distributions install very easily. It took me 20 minutes to run the installation when I installed Calderas Open Linux, but I played Tetris for 2 hrs. The truth is, if I can do the install, anybody can. I almost bought a Viao but decided to keep the extra 500$. The Satellite is a little heavier but every one knows computer geeks need the exercise anyway.
I dont see how it becomes a censorship issue to make the entertainment industry provide consistent and factual information about the content of a movie or video game. If I decide not to see a movie because the rating on the movie poster indicates that Im not going to like it, thats not censorship. Its an informed decision. If a movie company decides not to make a movie because they feel that disclosing the fact that the movie is extremely violent or sexual may hurt ticket sales, thats not censorship either. Its a marketing decision. The entertainment industry has been weaseling around this issue for a long time. They havent shown the will to do it proerly without regulation so now its time to force them to do it.
There is no question about the legality of scanning the email accounts. The system belongs to the employer and they have the right to scan it. The larger question here is the moral one. Should you violate the users privacy and possibly cost someone their job by implementing a policy you personally disagree with? Personally Id suggest to HR an unofficial scan first with warnings to anyone identified. Then implement the policy officially. Failing that I'd walk.
Take a drive through Flint Michigan sometime. One of the birthing places of the UAW is just a 20 mile long slum now. The unions are interested in us because theyve already ruined the auto worker.
SMS allows an authorized person to control/observe your system. BO2K allows a script kiddie to control/observe your system. I think MS is right on this one.
How many tool kits are out there to let you build trojan horse programs for SMS?
CDC can play with words and semantics all they want. They created a hacking tool and thats that.
There is a big difference. In the 70s when Pinto gastanks were exploding, it was not because a bunch of mechanics were running around lighting them on fire. And then blaming Ford for the resulting explosion. ALL software has bugs. The fact that MS has more then their share is not an excuse to take advantage of those bugs. If the intention of the melissa virus was to point out those problems, why not simply release a patch to fix it? Whoever wrote the melissa virus is a vandel. The fact that it may be a 30 yr old vandel just makes it sadder.
I think your confusing the issue. The problem is not the gross insecurity of Microsoft software. (Although I wont argue against that.) The real problem is that somebody decided to take advantage of that insecurity for their own amusement. While I dont think this guy should get the death penalty he did cause email servers to crash and untold amounts of work and effort to IS departments across the WORLD. Lets not even think about the career effects that could be caused by unintentionly sending your boss a list of porno links. He should be punished for it and it is a crime. Lets face it the guy is 30 years old. Hes a little too old to be a vandel and he should have known better.
As a side note, if this guy really thinks of himself as a bad ass cyber terrorist/vandel, how could he not know about the guid? Its been common knowledge for most of a month.
If the skill set of the students was really point and click, then getting anything besides an f from a MCSE program would be nothing short of a miracle. Besides the article doesnt say it was an MCSE program.
I thought Pi would be a better example of a geek movie. Still I would hardly consider putting a drill through your head a final triumph over your own mind.
As an additional note it seems to me that Gus probably bought most of his collection at Toys R Us. Hows that for customer appreciation? My letter is below.
Today on the slashdot website (www.slashdot.org) I learned that Toys R Us has decided to force the toysrgus website to shutdown. Im afraid I find this objectionable for many reasons. 1. The toysrgus website has been in use for approx 5 yrs. In this time Toys R Us never attempted to reach an agreement in regards to the domain name. 2. I find the velvet fist approach distasteful. It seems that in situations where corporate america wants something that may be legally questionable, the easiest answer is to loose the lawyers. The threat of a long and financially devastating legal battle makes it difficult for the normal guy to stand up for himself even if he is right. I find this to be frightening and I choose to oppose it whenever I can. 3. Although my grasp of trademark law is limited, it seems doubtful to me that your company can own a trademark that includes anything ending in us.com or starting with toysr. 4. There are obvious free speech issues here.
I have 2 children and in the recent past I have spent hundreds of dollars at Toys R Us stores to prepare for Christmas and birthdays. Unfortunately, I will no longer shop at your stores. As a parent I can not support a buisness that shows such a lack of morality.
I sent this letter to cusomerassist@toyrus.com and to lpollard@darbylaw.com.
Sounds to me like a good reason to quit buying Toshiba Laptops. These days we dont really have to deal with companies that dont act like they want our money.
I really dont understand the hostility here towards Jon Katz. The idea seems to be that the guy doesnt know Linux so hes worthless. Thats not much of a yardstick. I know plenty of Linux/Unix users that I wouldnt let mow my lawn.
Katz has been nothing but accomodating to the audience here. Im not sure that I would bother to learn Linux just to understand somebody elses point of view. Would you?
Quite honestly I think Katz has been much easier to get along with than the collection of OS bigots buttheads, and AC's that choose to whine and cry every time he posts.

Warcraft 2 cost me an entire semester when it came out. I'm never going to finish school.

All beer is good beer, but free beer is better beer.

No CEO is going to place the future of his company into the hands of a bunch of long haired geeks who think that computers are 'kewl'.
Jar-Jar next appearence will be the Star Wars Phantom Menace Christmas Special.
Could make a very useful UPS
Two things
First, I doubt that I will vote for someone who is squatting on over 200 domain names.
Second, Isnt this in some way a restriction of free speech?
Al will fix it.

Its a shame that MST3K is being cancelled. I get the feeling that Wing Commander is a nmovie they could really work with.
I think your time is overvalued.
Couldnt say it better myself
If you can question what Jon Katz has done, surely we can ask What have YOU done?
