I can, too. If the finger or pencil or whatever is held there for more than a few seconds, the feeling becomes almost painful...like a not quite headache.
I've never had the 'luck' of encountering a shark:) But I do know that one time I was visiting the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. and while strolling down a footpath I suddenly got a very strange feeling. The classic 'hairs on the back of my neck stood up' type thing that I had never experienced before. I turned around a on the hill behind me was the wolf enclosure, and 3 very large wolves standing up on the rise, staring at me. I wondered at the time whether that was some kind of racial memory thing. Spooky in any case.
But I think the strawberry analogy weakens because there has never ( as far as I know) been a societal/social/religious stigma attached to liking strawberries. Now suppose strawberry eating was condemned by the major religions of a culture, and in fact being found guilty of strawberry eating carried a death penalty for quite a long while. But things slowly changed, until eventually the penalties were much less; then wouldn't the strawberry likers quite possibly form support groups, publish newsletters, even form political action committees to remove what they saw as the last vestiges of prejudice against themselves?
Just a thought anyway:)
I thought for a minute there they were talking about IRC back in the late 90's. Now THERE was a storm of cybering for you. Not that I would..ummm...have any personal knowledge or anything.
Will Durant, one of the best historians of the 20th century, met his future wife Ariel when he taught at her school. If I remember correctly he was around 25 and she was 14 or so. They married and lived a very long and happy life together. He would be considered a pedophile in the media today, but i would certainly hesitate to label him as such.
She was closer to 14 or 15 I think, and all but her very last adult film were made while she was underage. Her last one was filmed just after she had turned legal, so it's the only legal one ( in the U.S. anyway) that you can find.
According to wikipedia, the government was going to prosecute lots of industry figures over the Lords case, but it turned out that her fake ID was a U.S. passport in the name of Traci Lords. So it was the government that had accepted the false document, not the nasty evil porn folks.
It doesn't take up many resouces, so it's nice to have in the running in the background. I take a break from whatever I'm working on and see if my subs can work their way into range of that juicy carrier group.
I think it's true that high school type thinking leads to a lot of the excessive notetaking. Too many students seem to view any departure from the book as a waste of their time. I went to college 20 years ago and it was the same then.
Once in a math class, the TA went through the standard method for solving some problem (which I can't for the life of me remember now) and then told us a second, kind of 'neat' way to get the same results. He told the class "Now you won't be tested on this method, but it is good to know." And of course someone immediately asked "If it won't be on the test, why should we bother to learn it?"
Some people love to learn things, and some (most?) just want to get through it and get the paper saying they graduated.
but I can after 5 years on EQ1, I can pretty much predict that anyone who will only group with people who can type 2 complete sentences without mistakes is doomed to a lifetime of soloing.

That's ridiculous...I would say more but the NSA just called to tell me my crabcakes are burning.
And if you did hire him, and the day came when for whatever reason the company had to let some people go, you wouldn't be wondering just what kind of damage he might do if he is the one picked? How does someone convince you that he has reformed sufficiently to keep that worry away?
I've tried 2 different video files, one last night and one this afternoon. Both get about 3/4 of the way through then my whole system freezes and I have to power totally off. It's too bad, because I have really enjoyed Google Earth and Talk and most of their offerings.
I understand your desire to keep things ontopic, and generally I agree; but some of the best discussions I have seen on here have been off the original post's topic. You guys are doing a great job...occasional dupes aside . Just don't try to rein in the straying discussions too much. Slashdot has always been a fairly anarchic place, and damnit we like that way:)
Actually I think the legal drinking age is 21, but state law allows 18 and older to be in bars and other places that serve alcohol. from a legal FAQ page for Louisiana:
What is the drinking age in Louisiana?
The legal drinking age in Louisiana is 21, it is not 18.
LSA R.S. 93:11 makes it illegal to sell alcoholic beverages to anyone under the age of twenty-one years.
LSA R.S. 93:12 makes it illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to purchase or have public possession of an alcoholic beverage.
LSA R.S. 93:13 makes it illegal for anyone to buy alcoholic beverages for anyone under the age of 21 years except for a parent, guardian or spouse of the person under 21.
So, it would appear that someone under 21 years cannot buy or have in his possession (in public) any alcoholic beverage. It would also appear that it would not be illegal for someone under 21 to drink at home if a parent buys the booze.
I was just thinking the other day about some of the most memorable events I have watched on the news, and the one I most wished I had taped more of was the Wall being swarmed by those happy crowds. And now the BBC has given me a late Xmas present:)
Those were the days...when you turned on the news to see what new GOOD stuff had happened since you last watched.
Hehe...sounds like me in my early teens. The local library had a whole rotating rack of horror paperbacks. Some King, Koontz, and lots of books that segued into explicit (and kinky) sex at the drop of a hat. Needless to say I was a devout horror fan:)
Ah but there HAS to be an Intelligent Toy Dispenser (ITD) due to the irreducible complexity of me having received the things i asked for in my letters year after year. Surely this can not be explained by some secular 'random chance' thing. Buncha/. heathens.

Damn...I knew I picked the wrong week to order The Complete Idiot's Guide to Defeating the Great Satan. But the price was just so good.

Umm....actually Nero was a bit less than 2000 years ago, not 2650.

Next thing you know all the schools will be using that infamous book, "Heather Has Two Undead Mommies."
