But Jack Thompson will SUE their asses. And that's much more scary.

The Hacker Crackdown by Bruce Sterling for a nice look at the underground BBS culture in the late 80s to early 90s, and a healthy dose of pre-Patriot Act law enforcement tactics against 'hackers.'
Because if you managed to get all the way through it, you were a dedicated SF fan with way too much free time. Now thats a good partial definition of a geek:)
It has cool technology, some geeky ( and other just plain weird ) characters, and lots of abstract philiosophy. What could be better. Listen to the Big Wheel!
>>Quick tip #4. If you are a geek and meeting geeks from other companies chances are they will be in shirts and tee's too and they are going to conclude you are a noob or a phony if you wear a shirt and tie to the meeting. Only time you are gonna do it is if you are meeting executives from a customer because they wrongly place value, and make judgments, on how good or bad the tie you are wearing is. On the plus side ties are a top subject for casual chit chat among air headed executives.
I agree with most of the post, but this section did kind of amuse me. So the fellow geeks will judge you to be a noob by your clothes...but those customers wrongly make judgements on your clothes? There is just as much 'reverse snobbery' in the world as otherwise.
My most vivid memory of text games has to be trying to get that damned fish in my ear in HHGTTG. It caused me more stress than any number of graphic gamess ever could. On the other hand, I have to say that Leather Goddesses of Phobos was a very interesting game for ateen boy:)
No no no....don't even suggest that....I can see the next Slashdot headline now: "Giant Bobblehead species found!" Soon to be seen on McDonalds cups worldwide.
But it could be something as simple as the person in charge at Activa being infuriated by this 'nobody' trying to expose the company. I don't know, since like you said, we don't have details. Lawsuits do sometimes come about because of purely irational persoanl feelings.
From another newspaper account of the trial, quoting his former court-appointed attorney... "Edwards and local television journalist Julia Lewis of WRAL said Petrick apparently supported himself by running a computer business. Lewis said he seemed to know a lot about Linux and operating systems." Obviously a very dangerous man, folks. I mean, he could even be one of those Open Source radicals or something. Won't somebody think of the children!!!
Yes, it's sarcasm...I promise I won't indulge in again.
Depending on the area you live, there may be quite a few 'unfortunate souls' around. In the small mountain town I am from, the library computers were booked a week in advance. It's a mix of students and adults , making use of the internet in many ways.
I see the providing of internet access by libraries much as the providing (provision?) of books...as a means of access to information. These days, that information is increasingly online, and I think it's only natural that the libray is where people know they can find it.
Please pardon any glaring spelling mistakes...it's the fault of lack of caffeine so far this morning.
My whole family read the Hitchhiker's Guide when I was a teenager. My mom had a teeshirt made that said "I know where my towel is." and gave it to my brother for his birthday:) All of our condolences and best thoughts to his loved ones.
I can just see the allowed song list now. It will be just like those ads on tv for collections of childrens' songs...Itsy Bitsy Spider and Casey Jones, etc. Napster could become the elevator music KING!!
I agree that there are already 'spiritual' communities, but I think, just from personal observation, that the spiritual side is secondary...I think people want a sense of belonging to a group...be it spiritual or intellectual.

At least this time the famous gamer won't be getting implants and posing for Playboy...or so I very very very sincerely hope.
Me, slowly banging my head off the monitor. Now can we just go ahead and do a two story in a row dupe and end the suspense?
