I am a shitty writer so when I read articles that are well articulated, like Katz's, I definately enjoy it.

I'm 22 and not that far removed from high school. I went to school in Colorado at a high school similar to Columbine. I totally related to Katz's articles on his Hellmouth series. The mass media totally missed the boat of what is going on in high school (yeah, video games caused it). Katz's articles were the only ones that EVEN TOUCHED on the issues at hand (the jocks fucking with everyone who was different and not as yuppy as them.) It was probably the most responded to articles on /.

As far as flames, Katz mentioned in his article that he wants them to stop. I think that alot of times that they are funny, and I wouldn't take them personally. I am not for censorship of flames (which they are if you surf at,+2 or more).

Anyway, thanks for your response Jon. I won't uncheck my box, because your articles definately induce good discussion, which is why I am here (and the subject matter, of course).

I'm a mac-head musician, never used Linux (would like too if they had descent music software) so there are more people than technical Linux, Perl programmers here.

  8. Augmentation of Biology on Brainstorming New Uses for a Mobile Processor · · Score: 2

We have always used advancements in science to enhance the limits of our biology. Glasses for improving eyesight, clothes for improving weather resistance, shoes, cars to travel, etc.

I think that mobile devices will process tasks that are not possible merely by ourselves (duh). The clumsy interface of writing on your PDA will be replaced by voice recognition (and you thought that people talking on their cell phones is bad, just wait a couple of years and everyone will be interacting to a computer. "HAL, what is the closest THAI-MEXICAN restaurant? . ././.../.)

Mobile computing devices will have wireless broadband, so you can run a server with the speed of a T1 right from your belt. I'm sure the people who have these types of PDAs will be exposed to continuous radiation, possibly causing cancer (?)

It might even create to races of humans. Cyborgs who have access to information, communication (not the Robocop battle gear cyborg) and those without.

You'll be able to Book Travel Plans (can now, even), Read the news (slashdot), Pay your Bills, Play games, talk to friends, have sex (assuming that the device can change your brain waves, who knows), etc.

The screens on PDAs are way to small, I expect that future PDAs will have an interface that has a microphone, an earbud, and an optical monitor that is an inch from your eye, but gives you the detail of a 15 inch monitor. Maybe some sort of gloves that you can "twitch" or air type that would be faster than voice recognition will be availible.

The PDAs will be cheap, but corporations will control the access to the network. They will make you sign yearly contracts and offer terrible service.

But I guess if you think about it, why would you want a PDA if you can do everything that you need to do from your home terminal?

    To look like RoboCop.

    my 2 cents.

I don't think that it would be to challenging to create a new set of protocals and browsers that are technically superior to the html protocol and somehow limit corporate prescence. Corporations deserve a voice but they have to much control and power over the government (USA, specifically).

They don't have encryption on VHS. I can copy any movie that I rent (I don't though). This legal action is a blatent power move to gain more control over people and what the watch and when. If the US government sides with the DVD group, I would say that we (those in the US) live in a Fascist nation. Putting the rights of corporations before citizens, is just that. Fascism. This is not democracy.

Speaking of the RIAA, I don't think that we will see SDMI in this lifetime. If it does ever come out, I have a hard time believing that people will jump on the band wagon. If I were to buy a single, I would want to back it up so I wouldn't loose my investment. But with SDMI it will be a pain in the ass. Then again, I would probably just convert it to MP3.

Diamond may have started something important. I could see a modified MP3 format with protection sooner than I see SDMI coming. And the new Microsoft proprietary format, there are to many sound artifacts to make it listenable. Although, if you are on a slow modem, it might make more since than MP3. . .
