Just like big iron, the PC isn't "going anywhere" it's just fading into the background. Perfectly usable PC's are rapidly approaching the bubble pack price range ($150) and size. When that happens, they will be a disposable commodity that has to work until it is thrown away. This is very bad news for M$, and good news for the company that masters the art of allowing your data to move to the next PC when you throw away the previous one. At this point, the PC is a brick, a lego brick. Omnipresent, but as exciting as a brick. Cell phones, PDAs, Tablets, and iPods aren't competitors to the PC, whey are finer grain devices. Just as a mainframe doesn't compete with a PC as a browser, fine grain devices provide different functionality. A PDA makes for a great ebook, but a dubious word processor. My opinion is that the future is about presentation of data and commonality of sensors. I should be able to watch the same movie on my game boy and my projector with little effort (I do, but Joe Sixpack doesn't yet). In the same fashion, a GPS, camera or a keyboard should talk to my PDA or laptop seamlesly. PDAs, PCs and cellphones will simply be platforms for displays, sensors and input devices.
Yeah to SageTV, or MythTV. Frankly Tivo is turning into Max Headroom TV. Rather than giving you control, they give the control and information to the Ad companies. I'm predicting that the next Tivo headline involves giving all info to the NSA.
A lot of your assumption relies upon the assumption that volume of production will drive down costs, and that game desgners will refine their skills with regard to the tricky PS3 architecture. This assumption could operate in reverse. If the PS3 bombs initially, the lack of volume will keep prices high, and keep game designers from developing. Futhermore, if the PS3 bombs, so does BluRay, at which point the platform is tied to a very expensive albatross keeping prices way up there (UMD anyone). In the meantime Nintendo cuts costs and reissues a smaller cheaper improved design. i.e. PSP versus DS all over again.
Ok, the gaming junkies and the luxury market. Sounds like the PSP to me. Really slick package, high price, even a new video format. But Nintendo has beaten them out with a reasonably priced but innovative competitor. And the video format is DOA.
But at $600 hardcore fanboys are the primary market. On the other hand the "Family friendly" and "Female friendly" market is with Nintendo. And the $200 pricetag is a lot more "Family friendly" as well.
Yeah, 'cos Betamax, MiniDisc, UMD and MemoryStick worked out so well. Most of Sony's problems in the past 10 years have come from attempts to establish proprietary media standards. DRM has just pushed this stuff into hellish rootkit overdrive. This is compounded by open civil war between the hardware and content divisions where the company is suing itself repeatedly. And while they aren't taking losses yet they have had preciptious profit drops, including the notorious 98% drop back in 2003.
Oh yes I loved being in new york when the trains werent running. 60K a year retire at 55 and they wanted to retire at 50. No one owes you a job or a life you have to make your own.
Oh yeah, doing manual labor in a rail yard in summer's heat and winter's cold till you're 55 years old! Why don't you drop that rough programming job and sign up for the transit authority? Just because you can be outsourced at the drop of the hat doesn't mean that you should hate on folks that have real leverage cause they unionized.
Do I smell a transition to DivX/XviD based CDs. Or just a lot of flash media which happens to have DivX/XviD content encoded on a one time pad?
Seriously, if they make possesion of a DVD tantamount to piracy, force people to show all of their DVDs including the naughty ones, they will simply force a transition to other less controllable physical media. Couple that with the nascent clusterfsck which HD-DVD and BluRay is becoming and you have a total loss of control over media and distribution which is the ony justification for the MPAA!
Damn straight. Can't wait for the DSlite to hit, smaller and more battery life. My PSP gathers dust because of the size, limited battery life and fragility. Remember, the gameboys are also well near indistructable and use flash for storage. And don't forget the play yan mp3-mp4 cartridge.
Railroads are far more efficent than trucking, but trucking is heavily subsidized relative to trains, both directly and indirectly. As energy prices spike, those tracks are going to see a lot more use both with regard to cargo and people.
The rail system also has a indirect value in terms of right of way and associated power networks. The Sprint telco was a spin-off of the Southern Pacific Railroad INTernal fiber network.
As for wireless, while the wireless routers may change, requiring changeover of the circuit cards (with increasingly lower cost per retrofit) the infrastructure of power, antennas, broadband landlines, right of way and weatherproof boxes will remain and have immense value.
For example, we don't complain about all those useless analog cellular base stations cluttering the landscape, because they were upgraded to digital while retaining much of the preexisting infrastructure.
I've got both the PSP and the DS phat. My PSP gathers dust while my DS and GBA micro are constant companions. And I'm getting a DSlite ASAP.
Two Reasons: The Play-Yan media player. It takes dirt cheap SD cartridges and it plays MP3/MP4 files. It works on any GBA compatible gameboy and it has spectacular battery life. Beating the hell out of the PSPs measily battery life.
The PSP is too bulky, expensive and fragile to carry everywhere. Ditto for the Video iPod. The DS is rugged (and with the DS lite compact). The GBA Micro is utterly inconspicuous and both are much less likely to make one a target for theft.
As for homebrew. I've had more luck with the DS and a programmable cartridge (my DS is hacked to not need a pass thru).
...but he isn't taking it far enough! He's arguing all this using this complicated written language stuff, which denies the contents to illiterates. If you can't do everything with pretty pictures it's not free! As a result the entire resources of the FOSS community shoulod be diverted to implementing a free version of Microsoft Bob!
Basic was simple but, it taught horrible programming practice, and ended up a dead end since it was quite limited in total scope. On the other hand these days Python is free much more elegant, and infinitely more powerful. It's easy to start with, has a very linear learning curve, but is capable of supporting very powerful applications. In particular it is ideal for rapidly developing games with pygame and delta3d.
In the meantime, learning Python provides structucture object orientation and incredible data structures.
Two words, reality ads. Have a feedback mechanism, give the actor one shot, and kickback added points per vote/sales. Basically a televised elevator pitch.
Most ads I fast forward through on my PVR, but some I rewind a watch a few times. For example, the "we're for dogs" ads from Pedigree, or Victoria's Secret ads, although I neither a dog nor a girlfriend and the latter vendor never has anything in my size. A good interesting ad has people asking their friends if they saw them. On the other hand, the spectacularly annoying ad is toast in the PVR era.
Keep in mind that Music Videos are essentially ads.
One of my friends who lived in Germany in the 80's told me that at that point commercials were clustered in large blocks, with the impetus to draw people based on creative values.
A better solution might be the concept of explicit ad antibodies, watch an ad once and have the option of killing it with a press of the remote, coupled with an "applause" button as well. By rating ads, the advertiser could have a much better guide to the level of acceptance of each ad.
The exquisite Nintendo Play-Yan cartridge which allows for MP3/MP4 playback on the GBA essentially means "Mr. Play" in the Osaka dialect which in turn is regarded as humorous and entertaining.
Could be worse, they could call it the Nintendo Bukkake (Splash).
Buffy the Vampire Slayer was originally devised by Joss Whedon (who has a degree in feminist film studies) as the reversal of the girl and the monster enter the alley and only the monster exits. In contrast, with buffy she and the monster enter the alley and only Buffy exits. The first girl is the final girl, without the misogyny. This is a much closer analogue to Laura Croft, or other fictional kickass ladies like the Major in Ghost in the Shell.
Having read a classic comics adaptation of Machivelli's The Prince does not constitute intelligence. But seriously, Rove's sucesses have largely derived from his complete disregard for conventioal limits of political discourse. For example, his strategy for pushing bills through congress is to ignore the dissent within his own party and achieve a bare minimum of votes. Effective initially, but the long term implications are horrific for the party if their majority is diminished or eliminated. In the same fashion Iraq seemed to be ruthless brilliance until the shit hit the fan. Lysenko was smart this way.
It's just like Enron, if you are sufficently ruthless, and cook the books with no thought to tommorow you can look like a genius.
As for initellectual curiousity, this is the administration who had a college dropout overriding world class experts in NASA. This was the administration who put a VC in charge of the NSF. Rove has stated in the past that "If they have a doctorate they are a democrat" (I have to paraphrase this one no tabbed browsing on this hotel connection).
And as a result one should ban all hetrosexual guilds as well since they are based on sexual activity, especially "family frendly" ones because at those are (with the exception of baster babies) intrinsically related to sex for their existence.
No we must limit all WOW guilds to celibate losers......redundant......never mind.

Yeah, all that moving around of jobs, to India.
