My cell phone was turned off a month ago (my father forgot to pay the bill and i 'forgot' to remind him to pay for it) and its been the most peaceful month ever. I can totally afford to front the bill myself, but I'm doing fine without the electronic leash.

So the US Government should either (a) buy the source code and conduct their own review, or (b) switch operating systems.
If I write software and the government uses it, okay good for them. If I offer the source code for sale and the US Government does not buy it but another government does, then I did not create any risks for national security since the US Government has the same opportunity to buy the same source code.
I wrote this same system for Old Dominion University's Computer Science department, however it also brings insecure communication which is no good. In the end, we will allow you to browse the web (we offer secure webmail imap and pop3 clients, as well as a web based ssh client) and use secure ports (https, imaps, ssh, et al) via web based automagic redirected authentication. We also offer vpn's to students so they can use the net with unrestricted access(which does not require the web based authentication voodoo). If you're an ODU CS student, bring a laptop around the lab sometime to beta test the service. It goes live in the summer.

The funny thing is, the University uses a cisco solution and I did the whole thing with FreeBSD+ipfw+apache+php magic. I expect a hefty bonus this christmas...
Allow me to walk you through one of my days. I wake up at 10am, skipping my 8 or 9am class and go to work at 11am. I usually spend my time at work doing something cool for either my job or just to gain more knowledge. 5pm comes around and I say I'm going to class but instead just go home and hang out with my roommates. Four months go by and I have at least a B in all of my classes.
It has been this way since my freshman year of college and I've decided now that college is pure bullshit. Now, I know there are a lot of better schools out there, but I've already invested 3 years here so I figure I may as well finish (funny I find myself saying the same thing in college that I said in high school).
I went to a very mixed high school, so I had the wannabe thugs and the snobby high class kids to deal with. I came from a middle-high class family in the middle of the town making friends with the A, B, C, and D table (I think I was C freshman and sophmore year, and B my junior and senior year).
I was a geek, I spent from 2:30pm until 12am on my computer doing stupid shit everyday. I was in the honors classes because the standard classes were too easy, however I never did my homework because of the computer and my grades suffered. In high school I wrote various Windows programs, became a consultant for a reputable web hosting company, and had more friends than my older sister had when she was in HS. She was head of the cheerleading squad, student body president, all AP courses girl that everyone wanted to get with. I never used the 'I am her brother' method to gain popularity.
The fact that I was a geek was what made me popular in my school. Freshman year, yea I used to get teased (but held my own if anyone tried to bully me). Sophomore year I bought a blazing fast 2x CD burner right after we got our trial cable modem (I was able to pull 10mbit with that thing.. those were the days) and proceeded to hit IRC for the latest music albums. I figured I didn't get to go to the mall often enough to buy music so I'd download the CD off of IRC and make my own cover using cdnow.com's cd cover and various artist images on the internet. The next day I walked in with Mase's new cd a day before it was supposed to come out. Everyone was shocked when I said I made the cd myself. For my sophomore and junior year of high school I sold bootleg cds to e-v-e-r-y-o-n-e.. even my principal. When Nas came out with I Am, I had a bookbag full of 40 bootlegged copies and sold them all in one day... in essence I bought my friends.
Senior year I realized how stupid it was to steal music (I was the only kid in my school that argued against napster) and used my free time to write games and programs. I didn't expect to really talk to many people that year, but everyone still hung out and partied with me. Everyone, including the high class snobs and thugged out football players told me that they expect me to do something or be somewhere big after college.
The day I left high school will probably be the saddest day of my life because so many people liked me for who I was. A geek.
This requires you to cut your nintendo case and use even more space with 4" of cartridge sticking out of the back. Plus, nothing is like coming back from a frat party and trying to load Super Mario Bros 3 while verbally abusing your nintendo:)
I'm sure performance will be of concern here, so why would X even be considered? Atheos, a young and immature OS, has it's own GUI and its speed can blow XF86 out of the water. How about some realistic goals? Port the XF86 drivers to ReactOS (that way instead of ripping out an entire GUI to roll your own, you can just replace the drivers).
I went into our server room the other day to update a users account on our.net server and decided to check the uptime (well how long the network connection has been enabled which is close enough:) and it was at 95 days. I wasn't surprised that.NET had held its own for so long, I was surprised we hadn't had a power outage that took out our servers in so long =)

Absolutely the best Java book I've read

Effective Java
·
· Score: 5, Informative
This book is the best resource I've encountered for someone who knows the Java language, but wants to master its use. I can virtually guarantee that the rules and techniques covered in "Effective Java" will form the new foundation on which you will build the rest of your best practices for writing excellent Java code.
Written by the Joshua Bloch, the acknowledged expert on the subject, it is as authoritative as they come and extremely well-written. After six and a half years as a senior developer architecting and implementing algorithms and class libraries in Java, this book shocked me by summarizing much of what I knew about how to use the language effectively, while teaching me much that I did not know. It continues to top my recommended reading list for all new software developers at my company.
I wrote a proof of concept application with VB first. I know all about the resource kit and ADSI. If you read my post, you would see I wasn't bashing Microsoft in any way. I just said I replaced perl by rewritting the script with C.
Now if you really want the entire background of the story, here it is: the last admin wrote the user creation script with perl and used the task scheduler. I see NO need for perl on the system when the whole thing could be written with WSH and ADSI. Therefore I wrote a replacement in Visual Basic (did not want to use the scheduler so I chose VB instead of WSH). I wanted to refine my C skills, so I rewrote it in C (my work for the winter was done, I had time). I took the time to make it a service, allow control from remote machines, and other little things I wanted to see in the program. Just the fact that I replaced the script should have clued you in that I know about ADSI.
How about creating users in an Active Directory automagically? I do not like the fact that we had to install Perl to get the job done (and thats the only reason why perl exists on the server) so I took it upon myself to rewrite the script in C. When I get back to work I will happily uninstall perl and not have to deal with the crappy Windows Task Scheduler anymore.
And microsoft had what to do with Cygwin? Seriously, if this is true then this is a good thing. Microsoft's scripting support has been lacking in a lot of ways ever since batch files.
Who said it was due to borked hardware? Have you ever tried working your system with the first revision drivers that come with your hardware? My mom's computer crashed last night with a BSOD due to Dell's stock NVidia drivers. I'm sure if I take the time to install the latest drivers I won't have to worry about it in the future (but hey, its not MY problem).
Yes, if you do not get hardware acceleration on a certain function, the program can choose to fail instead of using emulation. With that said, why would ati want to show off features of its dx9-compliant card on subpar hardware?
