This article shows an interesting difference between the Military and Big Business when it comes to anything computer related. For decades now, Big Business has treated computer related offenses as far greater offenses than their real world counterparts. However, it takes the Military decades to treat computer related offenses as actual combatively hostile actions worthy of an armed response.
It seems this guy was a Thai immigrant who earned US Citizenship. However, he might still hold Thai Citizenship, and in that event, the guy will have no US Protections
Actually, 10,912ft/min works out to be 124mph -- which is not that fast at all in jetliner speeds. So it is possible that passengers were unaware of the gravity of the situation until moments before impact
Considering I briefly evaluated Drupal last week and had to MANUALLY edit the code to get it to create a valid dsn to an af_unix socket because it kept adding the "unix://" protocol bit to the dsn string and wouldn't generate the string unless it already had a "unix://" bit -- talk about fucked up. I lost all confidence in Drupal and stopped my evaluation right there. A quick search on google shows this has been an issue for Drupal users for a few years now. Talk about confidence inspiring.
If they can't manage to properly auto-construct a freaking database connection dsn, why the hell would I entrust them to provide a secure service? So Drupal can take it's 10,000 commits and shove them up their ass. If the had quality coders creating good work, I'm confident they'd have a fraction of the commits they currently do.
I work at home and have stopped using my home office in favor of the couch -- while streaming from Netflix all day long. Reruns of X-Files, Dr. Who and Twilight Zone are dominating this week. I don't watch many movies during working hours, but TV shows don't require any real attention, so I can watch while working and not be distracted.
FFS, this idea is so bad it boggles all comprehension. Perhaps these "greenies" didn't take into considering that running the required hardware to support an internet accessible service on every light bulb would dramatically INCREASE power consumption world wide? Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.
If they want to track light bulbs, then a simple RFD and a cheap USB wand-reader device to be used by interested parties is enough.
Farts... that's right, farts. We're too far away to detect methane trace elements, but with current advances in super-flatulentelescopy, we can now detect any gas passing that may be happening across vast distances of space.
"I’m also somewhat surprised that a global firm with such an obsession for it’s public image as Disney would do something as unilaterally endorsing as promoting a single nation’s military."
Considering that Disney created propaganda films for the US Gov't during WWII and Walt was one of the most fervent supporters of Joseph McCarthy, this move is actually very much in line with Disney's track record.
Seen this a long time ago, at least 10 years ago. It was essentially a frame lined with IR sensors facing each other and tracking your hand movements and turned any flat panel display (such as a plasma TV) into a touchscreen surface. While it didn't do multi-touch, it was essentially the exact same concept
The best part is that he turned it into a time machine and had the story posted over and over again on slashdot. Cool apartment mod, but this was all over the place years ago.
A few people have already reported unauthorized credit card usage following the PS3 break-in. No word on anything widespread yet, but it's more likely going to lead to a rash of cases of identity theft. So yes, this will effect people personally.
However, I don't think this will make people cling harder to corporate interests, rather I think it will make them more suspicious and less trusting of corporations and web services in general. Just look at old people who lost their life savings when their bank went tits up during the Great Depression. Many still prefer to put their money under a mattress than entrust their money to a bank.
Storage is cheap. Just get something like a dRobo, throw some barracuda HDs in it and you have a multi-terabyte raid array. Just SCP your files down the net into the black box and you're all set. Question is, why aren't you doing this already? Just leaving your files up on your host and NOT backing up to local storage is classic dumbfuckery.
For databases, most cloud users use MySQL anyway, so just use the admin tool to back up and replicate to a local server. Don't have a suitable machine for a local server? Get a mac-mini, they are rather inexpensive and come with MySQL5 pre-installed and configurable through Apple's server admin interface.
I, like many others dropped Comcast Cable like the flaming turd it was a couple years ago and went with Digital Antenna + Tivo for HD local network broadcast. I still use Comcast for my internet connection via Comcast Business, but hey.. that's a tax write-off. They give me decent enough upstream (10Mbps) that I can host servers, and higher than advertised downstream (I usually get about 24Mbps) with no bandwidth throttling.
HBO is run by shitheads who pretend that P2P lawsuits are an effective deterrent and somehow think their offering is enough to keep people bound to Comcast Cable. Well HBO: FUCK YOU AND FUCK YOUR GO SERVICE.
I pirate HBO's shows because HBO wont let me get their shows with an iTunes purchase, they wont put them on Netflix and they seem to think I'll happily bend over and let them and Comcast have their way with my anal sphincter. But I wont -- the shitfest that is Cable TV is not worth $100.00 a month. So fuck you HBO and fuck your GO service. I hope you and Comcast and Viacom die the painful and agonizing death you deserve
It's weird that they share the same addiction to imperial measurement also.
Considering that Liberia is a shithole run into the ground by years of civil wars by warlords with the names "General Butt Naked", "Rambo" and "Osama Bin-Ladin, where cannibalism is rampant, shit covers the streets and 3/4s of the women are raped before they are adults... I'd say their love of the imperial system of measures is actually a non-issue and practically the only thing they truly have in common with the US.
Maybe because paper books aren't surrounded by the draconion rights restrictions that either outright prevent sharing and lending, or at best severely limit the ability to share/lend that we see with electronic publications.
I have a nice leather satchel style briefcase. It converts to a knapsack via a D-ring on the top, under the grab-handle. It is made from 3 pieces of 1/8" thick full-grain leather, no snaps or zippers, oversized leather outer straps to accomodate extra cargo such as a tent or sleeping bag. I've carried 50lbs of gear in it on 12hr long hikes and if necessary, can live out of it. It's built to last 100 years and is guaranteed for that time. In it I keep my laptop, a 1st aid kit, field glasses, LED mini-maglite, umbrella, magnesium fire-starter, radio, compass, watch and flask.
My briefcase goes with me wherever I go. I am always prepared. That was half the reason for buying it.

So close. Actually, it's being reported the he was found dead just an hour ago on the sidewalk outside his apartment from apparent asphalt poisoning.

AFAIK, any OS that allows a user to install software is susceptible to malware.
Anyone smugly thinking they aren't is an idiot.
Wake me up when a worm has been discovered in the wild targeting OS X or Linux
"So long as it doesn't personally affect them"
Key words here.

"In the past, DLR engineers had Justin 'dancing like in Pulp Fiction.'"
The Robopocalypse will begin when they start 'dancing like in Reservoir Dogs'

The confirmation of a suspected hoax is news, unless of course are you all in favor of keeping the debunking secret in order to propagate the hoax.
The only larger network than those two is interestingly Chinese QQ, which has 636 million users.
Well, considering that the population of China is just over 1.3 billion, I think that size of user base is to be expected
Or worse... they'd purposefully cause that sort of defect to breed labs full of little Einsteins

the first thing I though of for a "main application" was for theme-park animatronics, such as Pirates for the Caribbean.
