I only wish they'd had this and the dual HD feature sooner!
I went out and Mac-Mini and Snow Leopard Server the week Snow Leopard came out and can't think of a better option for a home-media server that offers cool features like a Mail and iCal Server, PodCasting, rounded out with a nice suite of admin tools and takes all of 20 minutes to install and configure.
Of course, I'm sure a horde of *nix and windows freaks will are ready to tell me why I'm wrong and could get far better for much le$$.
5GB a month is not enough? And you hit that mark watching youtube? My god man... why do you insist on subjecting yourself to the crapfest that is youtube? And even if they actually had something worthwhile, why can't you cozy up somewhere that offers wifi? 3G access is slow as molasses on a cold day. I'm surprised you were able to even hit 5GB in a month on that joke of a network.
Malware ie: trojans have been around for ages. This has nothing to do with the overall security of the OS and everything with the security threat the user is to themselves.
If you read this claim, it seems that any webpage loaded through a caching web-browser *could* fall under it.
1. A method for automatically updating software programs on a computer, comprising the steps, of:
storing an updated version of a program at a designated location in a remote memory that is accessible to the computer;
Being that most browsers will check a cache to see if it already has your content, the act of overwriting the cache before loading the asset for your page seems to run afoul of this auto-update process.
I agree, this is a great improvement in usability. Before, I'd have to worry about actually having to jimmy the lock, find a way to obtain dealer keys or know how to hot-wire. But now, with my handy mail-ordered RFID scanner, I can just clone the chip and I'm good to go.
Considering I have developed several RIA applications that run on both the desktop and the web in ActionScript that have nothing embedded save for minor graphics assets to smooth out the loading process and implements full on MVC architectures that utilize Unit Testing... it's warming to know that I just create mindless bullshit.
Flex, which is a flash based technology and requires the Flash player is becoming every bit as valid a development framework as Java. And works hand in hand with Java on the server-side and through communication protocols such as RTMP and RTMFP.
And while there will always be crap code developed in any language, blaming the tool itself for the ineptitude of developers is nothing short of ignorance.
Why don't you just do us all a favor and just call your service provider and have them disco your service?
Clearly, you must be to the point of a nervous breakdown having to tolerate the mountain of crap that is YouTube and all those millions of blog sites with crappy javascript, poorly formated HTML and links to banner ads to overburdened ad-farms.
Lower taxes??? Really? Because here in California, I pay $1300.00 A WEEK in taxes (state and federal income + FICA + SS + Whatever else) which works out to 38% of my income, which is a higher percent than either England or Canada take for their income tax. But, you're right... I get no nationalized health care package.
Intent and purpose do not matter. If I see that your carpets need vacuuming, is it ok for me to break into your house to clean them?
Surreptitious installations should in all cases be made illegal. There is no reason not to disclose a manifest of what will be installed and the ability to opt-out. Intentionally disabling the uninstall button is nothing sort of a malicious infringement upon user rights to administer their own machine and a blatant attempt at trying to force unwanted software upon the end user. These actions are no different than those of any malware/spyware creator.
And so the disabling of the "uninstall" button is totally cool with you?
Not sure which comments you were reading, but the ones I payed attention to were the ones that were ticked about the lack of any sort of notification prior, during or after the install, the lack of an opt-out and the intentional disabling of the uninstall button.
Wasn't there some laws being pushed that made this sort of covert install procedure illegal? Or did MS and Sony get those laws squashed?
Out of respect for the dearly departed, please... DO MAKE ALL THE JOKES YOU CAN THINK OF. Only a self important sourpuss would want people crying over their passing.
I'm going to do what Scotty would have done: Drink a bottle of something good and bask in the fond memories.
Look, you are not a freelancer, you are a full-time employee out of a job.
I can't tell you how many half-assed, half finished projects that I've seen come my way that were created by people like you. Typically, it's some mid to junior level code monkey kicked out of his cubicle that takes some project and then up and leaves for a full-time job offer.
The client and the project are left in a lurch and typically, the code itself is crap because it was made by a person who is used to being part of a large team and being told what to do and who typically focuses on small portions of larger code. So building a large scale application quickly becomes a cluster fuck for these types.
Are you a qualified and seasoned software architect? Can you deploy a complete webservice singlehandedly with all parts coded with the same level of skill? Are you willing to pass up a full-time job offer in order to work your project to completion?
If not, I would say everyone would be better off if you just went to some staffing service and worked as a temporary IT worker. You'll get paid similar to what you were paid before, have benefits and be given the same limited scope of responsibility. Best of all, if you decide to leave for a better opportunity, the staffing service can put another cubicle monkey in your place.
So please, think of the actual harm you will cause to both your prospective client and their product by taking freelance work when you are really just an unemployed cube monkey looking for a new cube.
Anyone that would write an article extolling his Ferrari branded laptop and how the prancing horse logo adds raw ultimate power should never be taken seriously.
I guess some people do listen to that hack. Well, perhaps a few less are listening to him now. *shrug*
Actually, in Japan, that is a GOOD thing. Not only does it help you walk, but it crushes your balls as well. A privilege usually reserved for the executive class.
SongBird is nice, that other one look like yet another horribly designed and ugly Linux GUI.
And while SongBird has plug-ins and even touts an SDK, it doesn't yet support iRemote or Speakers. Being that I have my iTunes library on a network share and use a single MacMini as my media server across a 5 room airTunes + AppleTV setup, having the speakers selector is critical. SongBird is essentially a single zone setup which would totally destroy my very nice multizone setup that I can control via wifi with the iRemote app on my iPhone
Considering the sheer amount of effort Apple has put into their media center offerings as a whole, I do not think it is likely that SongBird will replace iTunes as my OS X media player any time soon. But, if they can work in device support for AppleTV and airTunes, they might have something.

If YouTube is any indication, Hollywood will be safe for years to come.
What... are you saying that I'm supposed to take this site seriously.
Or are you just assuming other people take this as seriously as you.

Thank you technology!

I for one am outraged.

I think I'll call it the "Infinibrator"

Well, then never buy a BluRay Disc player or any other media device that uses HDCP. Because that's all that it is.
