I am sure that it surprises nobody that FTP sides are still being widely abused and lists traded....

I have been riding a downhill slope of enterprise email systems for the last half decade.
First I started working at a Novell shop, Groupwise was of course the flavor. Well, I thought
it was lacking in usability and features, until we ditched it for a worldwide Lotus Notes
enterprise solution. What groupwise lacks in features and usability, Notes takes and twists
into infinitely complex knots, lashings, and tangles. Preferences? We got em all over the
fucking place. Location preferences, user preferences, security prefernces, address book
preferences, all dispersed throughout different menus and buttons. There is no way
a non admin could properly configure this evil bitch. Want to archive some email and get
it out of your active database (oh yes, this is not a mail file, this is a full fledged encrypted
domino database, bitches) ? Ok, follow this simple 10 step process! To change the font size, you
have to leave the application and edit a preference file by hand on Macs. We had to send out
a small magazine to explain how to use an html signature. The default browser when you
    install? Notes browser. Ugh.

I have come up with a fairly plausible theory that Lotus Notes is a conspiracy
of complexity to keep huge numbers of IBM engineers and testers, as well as external
Notes administrators in business. Witness the ease of use of modern email.
We have well over 20 Notes admins for our global enterprise. REALLY?

    Citation please.

This smacks of someone just making up crap to support their viewpoint.

He is exactly right, and there is no citation for what goes on in the scene and the street.

If you have spent any time in the scene, even as a leech, you will know that there is fierce competition
to be the FIRST. The timeline is exactly as he said: cams first, telecine and r5's next,
then DVD screeners and finally official releases. If you are the group with a first in any
of these categories, you win. Cams are usually made in the first week of release, and make
it to the street very shortly thereafter.

The street follows the scene. If there is a cam out on the scene, you will see it on the street.
DVD Screener hits the scene, expect it on the street less than a week later. I live in new york
city and they sell boots everywhere, and they cost next to nothing. They sell them in the subway,
laid out on sheets in the street, guys with duffel bags walk around selling them, etc etc.
There is no shortage of bootleg everything here, starting with mass media, i.e. music software and movies.

Granted this was only an advertising company with no real secrets except personal data:
We noticed strange activity from a subnet in our building, and it turns out that around 6 pm
every day, this kid was walking around to as many pc's as he could and firing up kazaa. Enabled
by lazy desktop admins that had given the same password to EVERYONE. Using this one password
of course, could get you into anybody's personal stuff, but that is another issue.

We had a summer college intern that installed soulseek and kazaa within 5 minutes of logging in
to his computer. He was surprised when we got the two largest guys in the department to walk
over to his desk (6'3 and 6'9).

Almost 20% the desktops have tried to install Limewire.

We had a microsoft administrator that needed a redhat box for something or other on our backup
dsl. He installed the 5.1 version which had tons of known vulns and left it unpatched, unfirewalled.
Within a week someone had rooted and installed a game server on that box.

The same dude installed a "web server", and an "FTP Server" on an old mac, and also unwittingly installed an open web proxy
that was part of the same package (web sphere was the package I think). Pretty soon most of the traffic
was proxy traffic that had found us (probably scanned and made its way onto web lists). The logs were
good fun to look over on that one......
