The tank is not built to withstand vacuum. Some of the resins in the external tank would start to sublimate in vacuum. It would last for a several days in space, but not the months or years that would be required for a space station.
They could redesign an external tank that would survive in space, but it would be significantly heavier and would greatly reduce the payload.
It's been done. Short story, in the 1950's they were still testing nuclear weapons. They put one at the bottom of a long mine shaft and put a heavy metal plate on top to partially contain the explosion. The plate was last seen moving at about six times escape velocity.
On the other hand, it probably vaporized before leaving the atmosphere, see Operation Plumbob for more information.
I really wish that Mac OS X had some serious 3D Mechanical CAD software. SolidWorks or Pro/E for example.
SolidWorks is Windows based, so I don't have my hopes too high for that package. Pro/E runs on both UNIX and Windows however, so it probably wouldn't be too hard to port it to OS X.
And in what may be a coincidence, XNS (eXtensible Naming Service) released their specs this week also. Under their system you have a master set of data and then a number of ecards with subsets of that data. You might have a business ecard for colleagues and business associates, a personal ecard for friends and family, and so on. The system keeps track of which ecards you gave to which people so if you move or change data, the other people's ecards get updated.
Except that a "faithful recreation of the book on-screen" would have to be around 7 years long, if you include the parts where Frodo is just waiting around getting older while Bilbo is off getting Elf nookie.
Don't you mean 17 years? Bilbo disappeared at his 111th birthday which was also Frodo's 33rd birthday. Frodo started the trek when he was 50, the same age as Bilbo was when Bilbo took off in The Hobbit.
And perhaps you should read the article. He's launching a rocket that way. Not just payload. The catapult provides initial thrust. The rocket provides the rest.
Have you ever tried to fit three people into the backseat of one of these? For a five hour drive?
I'm currently investigating minivans. (Try fitting two baby seats and a grownup into the back seat of any economy sedan.) Does anyone know of any high efficiency diesel minivans? There's a station with biodiesel not far from my house.
I remember in the afterword of one of your books from the early 1980's, you discussed the research you put into choosing your first computer. At the time the choices for consumers were basically Apple II, CP/M, or MS-DOS.
How many generations of computers have you used since then? What system were you using just before you switched? Were you still using CP/M?
And for another interesting use of Applescript, Stone Create has a Save As option that will create an Applescript that will recreate the entire document. This is very useful if you want to create a script for some very graphic intensive forms. Set up the form with default data, Save As Applescript in Create, and then you have some very minor script editing to replace default data with variables. Very nice if you are not a full time programmer. Somewhat time saving even if you are one.
How many support calls does AT&T get where the problem turns out to be the cable modem?
The rate hike, at least in my area, is not as large as the modem leasing fee. The modem leasing fee is $10/month. The rate hike for people who don't use leased modems is $7/month. Could this be considered a
support charge for modems?
The radioactive dinnerware from Mexico was not made from radioactive waste. It was a coated with a traditional orange glaze, that happens to include natural uranium oxide.
And slashdotters may have to realize that TV ads are more effective than they believe. Marketing departments do check sales before and after ads are shown.
A lot of the Mac SE's had power supplies that would burn out after about 5 years.

On the other hand, it's not entirely SolidWorks fault. SolidWorks is built on top of the ParaSolid kernel. Try writing to Parasolid also.
Pro/E may have a steep learning curve, but SolidWorks doesn't really. SolidWorks was much easier to learn than Photoshop.

I was very lucky. My girlfriend (now my wife) liked garnets more than diamonds and told me so.
Most of her short stories that are not in book form from Baen, are in book form in Dreamweaver's Dilemna from NESFA press.
Several of the retail Apple Stores have Jaguar installed on some of their machines for trials.
My SCSI Smart & Friendly Turbowriter CD-RW works for data CD burning in the Finder, but is not recognized by iTunes.

If we want to support Macrovision-free DVD's shouldn't we go out to buy Harry Potter and then write a letter to TW telling them why? ;)
The Matrix is renamed Part III, The Matrix Revolutions. In a couple of decades we will see Matrix I, The Phantom Matrix.

> You very rarely find li'l ol' grannies rockin' with "The Cramps" and "They Might Be Giants".
My mother-in-law (a li'l ol' granny) loves "They Might Be Giants".
Maybe they're planning to take as long to pay the bar bill as they took to release Mozilla.

The biggest problem with this model, is how would you discover good new shows?
