in the tried and true american tradition, the riaa is trying to incite fear in the file sharing populace.
given the shear number of file sharers out there, 261 people is pretty insignificant, much less than 1%. given that in the last five years, about 26% of drivers where involved in car accident (source) you should be more worried about crashing than the riaa suing you.
i'm sure the riaa realizes this but also knows that fear is a powerful motivating force. they're just hoping that hearing about these lawsuits will turn many of those who now share into leachers, or knock them off the network entirely.
for a lot if interesting info about the culture of fear in america you can look here
It's quite interesting. McCarthy tells a good story, and in the tradition of good science writing, introduces us to the interesting cast of characters that is working on this stuff.
That said, the book has more of a 'fiction' and less of a 'science' feel to it overall. This is a science in its very early stages and much of the theorizing McCarthy does comes off more as wishful thinking than anything that the data backs up. To his credit, McCarthy points this out and tries to be careful to let you know what's fact and what's speculation.
Overall it's a pretty interesting book though. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys popular-science writing (in the vain of Gleick or Greene) and doesn't mind a little wild speculation thrown in.
For those of you who are interested in the applications for computing, he talks a very little bit about the possibilities in quantum computing that this opens up, but he actually explicitly states that he's not particularly interested in it. As such, most of the book is about matter that can change it's chemical properties and the more material science applications for it.
Ohh, and the last section of the book (actually and appendix) is all about the patent he filed for a device he came up with over the course of writing the book called a quantum well. It makes me a little nervous when someone's already trying to patent stuff that isn't realizable for years and years. Not a call to arms, but something to think about.

So, I've just spent less than five minutes putting in names of bands that I like and this service has a REALLY limited selection. They have NOTHING from any of the following bands:
afro celt sound system amon tobin us3 DJ Smash bullfrog dead milkmen slackers goldfinger dashboard confessional joe strummer catch 22
I'll grant that some of those bands are a bit obscure but that's what's great about p2p networks is that I can find those less popular tracks. Until I find a service that can match the selection of soulseek et al. they won't be getting any money from me.
Hmm, apparently you either ignored or didn't understand my last paragraph. What you are calling POPULAR MUSIC is really CORPORATE MUSIC. Yeah the shite the comes out on MTV is for the most part just that. And perhaps if you're going by straight record sales you're right, popular music today is shite. But if get involved with your local music community AT ALL I think you'll find what you're calling popular music not all that popular.
In fact, it's the very idea of "pop" not Jazz that is dead. I assure you that jazz is alive and well. A search at East Bay Express (paper for the Easy Bay where we have a vibrant and exciting music scene) for Jazz turns up 8 shows tonight, Rock gets 11. Tommorow Jazz gets 5 while rock only 3, HipHop gets NONE. And you claim Jazz is dead? Why don't you check on this sort of thing before making riduculous claims like that. Like I said, MUSIC IS FRAGMENTED. If you're to lazy to get off your ass and talk the more than 2 of the "young and ignorant" about what they're listening to then you can stay in your rocking chair on your front porch and keep yelling at us kids about how much things were better in your day. Pathetic...
>This generation is pathetic and lost. They are without a distinct identity, the the garbage that is made by them (Linkin Park for example) is base beyond measure.
Okay, I'll bite...
Are you living under a rock? Or perhaps (and the rest of your comment might indicate this) are you stuck in the past? There is at least as much - if not more - interesting and exciting music coming out today than at any time in the past. Just because it doesn't sound like the stuff you grew up with doesn't make it "base beyond measure" and the fact that the best band you can come up with to bash is Linkin Park suggests you might be the one who's "pathetic and lost".
Why don't you go listen to something on Blue Note? (Madeski Martin and Wood or DJ Logic to mention a few of the great new people on this label). There is all sorts of amazing experimental stuff coming out, check out Alien8 Recordings for some pointers. Punk rock has redefined itself and has a modern message and killer sound. Warped Tour (if you've ever heard of it) is one of the best (and cheapest) big shows around. I've had a great time at every show I've gone to.
The current music scene has fragmented and is moving in a thousand directions. I've mentioned only a few of those fragments and I'm sure that anyone who is at all "with it" could add many more references without even thinking about it. Get the hell out of your rut and start listing to stuff that doesn't play on MTV before you go bashing today's music.
For any of you out there who might be UC Berkeley students there will be a decal offered next semester in which we will build a team to play in the Simulation league. It'll be focused on developing the AI needed to do something like play soccer and should be a lot of fun. Watch the decal page for more info.

What Free Cable?
·
· Score: 1
Man, I've been stealing cable from AT&T for about 2.5 years now. I've transfered my account to different locations twice (you move a lot when you're in college) and I've never had a problem.
A piece of advice from an EE major friend of mine. Don't use more than an extra 50cm (about 1.5' for you americans) of extra cable to do this (meaning you should put your modem near the tv). If you do it can be detected by the change in the capacitance on the line. I've never wanted to test this but better safe than sorry I guess.
There's an interesting paper on "Warhol Worms" here.
Basically the author predicts that, by using efficient algorithms to search the space of potential victims a worm could infect most of the vulnerable computers in 15 minutes to an hour. Pretty scary when you think of how much damage Code Red variants were doing 3 weeks after the initial hit.
Apache::ASP provides an Active Server Pages port to the Apache Web Server with Perl scripting only, and enables developing of dynamic web applications with session management and embedded perl code. There are also many powerful extensions, including XML taglibs, XSLT rendering, and new events not originally part of the ASP API!
Sounds pretty good to me. Of course, I don't use much ASP so I don't really know what most 'hard core' m$ shops would need support for to be convinced to switch.
So, how does it know which sounds to block?

Making Your Room Quiet

· Score: 1, Interesting
Perhaps someone with a bit more knowledge about this stuff can enlighten us all. How do I choose which sounds I want it block? It's all well and good for my computer to be ultra quiet but I don't want the scream of the platter as my hdd crashes and burns blocked out. It seems like it would take some pretty spiffy AI to figure out what are blockable sounds and what aren't. (this is more directed towards the 'advanced version' due out in a year or so)

I am very disapointed not to see Amelie nominated for more of the big awards. It did get Art Direction, Cinematography, and Foreign Language (a fairly impresive list) but I felt like this was one of the best movies made in a long time, period.
Audrey Tautou was simply amazing, and I have yet to meet someone who didn't come out of the theater with a big smile on their face. This movie deserves the big nominations not only for being a beautiful film but for doing it without the usual trappings of a blockbuster.

This is a Linux distribution to watch out for, and it would straight compete with both Lycoris and Lindows.
Umm, yeah. It's good to know that we've been 'straight competing' all this time. Here I was thinking we were just in normal competition.
