In EQ, people on the public test server (which exercises changes coming down the river on an industrial scale) saw the vendor price for some crafting pattern go way up. Well, if the sell price goes up, so does the buy price, even if it is just a ridiculously small fraction.

So off to the live servers they go and load up every backpack and bank slot with stacks of these patterns. Update happens, bam! 5000 plat in the bank. At that early point in the game it was mildly godlike.

I still recall the community letter bleating about [Mort Goldman voice on] how awful, just awful, you players are.

My brother used to work summers fixing lawn mowers for Sears. He was forced to join the Teamsters (fell under delivery, I guess).

The masthead for his monthly Teamsters newsletter looked like the dramatis personae for a mob movie. There were like 15 names, and every single one was Italian with a nickname in quotes in the middle. Crap like "The Knife" aand "Lefty".

If running for union leadership was a class in an MMO, the character creation sheet would have a line for "Enter nickname here. This is your mob handle and will show up in double quotes over your head between your first and last name."

There are gigatons of snake oil fraud to root out. Still, nobody runs the relative numbers of fraud deaths vs. deaths due to delays proving things work to government agencies.
