It'd be interesting if the rest of the industry started selling DRM-free music, yet Apple was forced to continue selling their DRM'd music (it's likely in their contract, after all). I'm sure they'd love to stick it to Jobs, especially after he screwed them out of their variable pricing scheme. I think all that would do is hurt the iTunes Store, though, and not iPod sales.
What a poorly written article. Did this asshat even bother to read the pdf with the emails these quotes were taken from?
In an email chain to a couple of MS employees, expressing his dissatisfaction with a Creative Zen player, he tried out, Jim Allchin said: i think I should talk with Jobs. Right now, I think I should open up a dialog l~or support of the iPOD. Unless something changes, the iPOD will drive people away from WMP.
This is a far cry from Microsoft as a corporation actually considering a partnership. There's a much better article here, with a link to the actual emails (PDF). That Bloomberg article is a pile of shit.
MacOS X DOES provide an inline spell checker, though I believe it only works for Cocoa apps, not Carbon, and I think they leave it up to developers whether to implement it or not (it's an option for certain types of controls, like text fields). There's also a spell checker on the Services menu, though its more for checking the spelling of individual words.
I don't know about kids using their console for web browsing and IM though - it's kind of hard to hide your pr0n from mom and dad on the TV in the living room (this being the "HD Generation", I imagine most consoles will be in the living room/family room, and not in bedrooms).
Likewise, it'd also be difficult to chat with your friends with mom and dad reading over your shoulder.
That said, I'm not surprised the post was deleted. It came across as rude and demanding. "I need to hear from an official source as to who is correcting this bug" what the hell is that?
And since when is Blizzard the authority on what is an OS X bug, and what is an Nvidia driver bug?
OS X is notoriously picky on RAM - his Kernel Panics may be caused by incompatible ram.

Why this was even posted to Slashdot is a bit of a mystery, though not surprising.
Actually, you're the one who is 'freaking nuts' as you like to say. The trusted platform module (tpm) that is an integral part of the intel architecture on both pc & mac.
The TPM is such an integral part of the Intel Architecture no both PC and Mac that it's not even included on the latest Mac hardware, such as the Core 2 Duo iMac, the Mac Pro, or any of the Core 2 Duo portables.
Actually, I was just picking a random app - I'm an OS X user, not a KDE/GNOME user:)
You could replace amaroK with aKregator or Yakuake (where do they come up with all these stupid names), my point still stands - if you want to use an application not part of the core KDE or GNOME distribution, you'll have to install a bunch of libraries, and it likely won't fit in with the look and feel of the other applications.
Contrast with Windows or OS X (ignore Apple's non-sensical Aqua/Brused Metal/New "Unified" look/etc) where there's generally one API to target, one set of keybindings, etc.
Ubuntu users don't actually have to deal with KDE at all. Kubuntu users don't have to deal with Gnome, etc.
Sure they do. If a Gnome user wants to install something from KDE, say AmaroK, they end up having to install a bunch of libraries from KDE. If they're lucky, there's a theme to make it look the same as the rest of his Gnome apps, otherwise, they may even look different. Even if they do look similar, it's likely they use different menu structures and keyboard shortcuts, so its all very confusing.
Because they weren't trying to dilute it, they just didn't have a choice. "eyeTV" was already taken, so they knew they would have run into problems had they used "itv".
Exactly. So why the hell is Cringley trying to claim they are, and that El Gato forced them to change the name?
So Apple changed its marketing, diluting its whole "iThis" and "iThat" naming strategy in deference to Elgato, a company they could buy with a weekend's earnings from the iTunes Store
Right, even though when they first announced it they claimed iTV was only a code name. It couldn't be because of the numerous other products or services already called iTV. I doubt Apple "backed-off" from the iTV name just to appease El Gato. iTV was always a code name, NOT a product name.
I certainly fail to see the dilution of the iThis and iThat crap - iPod, iLife, iChat, iWork, iTunes - if they actually WERE trying to play down the iBlah naming, why the hell would they even consider calling their new product the iPhone?
You know, I used to think Cringley wasn't all that bad - the past year or so though he seems to be just another blowhard, almost in the same league as John Dvorak.
As for the lawsuit, I actually hope Apple loses - iPhone is a stupid name, IMHO. Apple Phone or even iPod Phone would be better names.
And when are we going to see a plain old iPod based on this fancy new tech? Drop the phone, keep the wireless and PDA functions, slap an 80gb hard drive on it, and you'd print money with the thing.
Theoretically, it'll work with any GSM provider (And Apple has yet to announce their plans for Canada and Europe - maybe they won't partner with carriers in those locales).
PS3 can run GNU/Linux and all the Free games developed for GNU/Linux by devoted amateurs
Wow so it can run Tux Racer and.. uh.. what, 10,821 Solitaire and Mahjongg variants?
Even if you do manage to get anything with moderately decent 3D graphics running, you're likely to be unable to access the GPU to make it fast enough to be worthwhile playing. And even if you do somehow manage to get past all that, there just aren't a lot of Free Software games worth playing.
The scenario you describe is of interest to maybe 1% of gamers.
I'd expect it to be the other way, they have a different kernel, but similar userland.
Actually, I imagine its completely different, but implements APIs from OS X like Core Image and QuickTime, for easy portability of code between the platforms.
When it's available in Canada, you can almost guarantee it'll be with Rogers.
I was a happy Telus customer, but hated my phone. My contract was up at the beginning of the month, and there wasn't a single phone Telus could offer me (PCS or Mike) that I wanted to use - so I'm now a Rogers Wireless customer.
Rogers/Fido having the only GSM network in Canada means they get all the cool phones. Until the other providers wake up, it'll remain that way.
#2 Did I mention the remote control is is a Buck Twenty Five? You've GOT to be shitting me. Not only is that ridiculous, it's IR only, sure you can probably program it to run your stereo, but it should work via radio to interact with the 360, from what I hear it does not...not really inspiring me to shell out $125.
The MS remote is $30, not $125. You must be thinking of the Logitech Harmony, which is a rip off.
(This is why I laugh whenever some MacHead tells me about how they "buy" their music rather than "rent" it. Cancel your iTunes account and see what happens to those songs you "bought".)
There's nothing to cancel, iTunes isn't a subscription service. All the songs you purchase are linked to a Apple ID, which doesn't expire.
Also, you could've continued using the Apple ID created with your.mac account after you cancelled.mac - it continues functioning as an Apple ID. You can even change the email address associated with it, so while your Apple ID may be R3dM3rcury@mac.com, the email address associated with the account could be R3dMercury@fancydomain.org
As for the ID being "buried" within OS X, try opening up the.Mac Preference Pane, and removing your old info.
Out of deference to the events in 2001, the number 911 should be reserved for unique use (in North America) of the emergency services telephone number, it's use in all other contexts... 13 could be included in the ban to standardize current practices. Most high rises do not have a thirteenth floor, and Friday the 13th would cease to be a problem.
Thanks, asshole.. my birthday is on the 13th:) I was born on a Friday, too..

I guess it may be possible.

I almost want to try it now
Would just have to figure out how to format a drive properly, and transfer my data from the old drive to the new one.

$100 for a 60GB HDD? It's $100 for a 20GB HDD! And at least for now, 20GB is the only option.
Losing the proprietary case/connector would be great - the stupid thing is just a 2.5" SATA drive. Let me plop any old drive in there, MS!
No DX10 on WinXP could be a real killer for DX, if developers feel the need to target both Vista and XP users, OpenGL could be the way to go....
...
Or DX9
Isn't it already pretty easy?

Still doesn't explain why he posted to the Forum, instead of using this nice little feedback form.
