So is this a capitlistic free market or what? Threat of legal actions brings in tons of free press! Those that did not know much about Sco before probably still don't but know they are hearing about them a lot more and will generate talks involving one of the few things the general population of this country have a common interes it: controversy/scandals.
Well if they want, AMD can list how many hertz their CPUs run at in something like attohertz. So a 2ghz system could be marketed as a 2,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000ahz SMOKI N FAST!
Screw shamelful marketing and screw fickle crowds!
You should try Gentoo. The install is definitely not as easy as openbsd or freebsd or mandrake or redhat but using Gentoo is such a breeze compared to them. It has a next generation ports system called portage. It is wonderful. Get some cheapy hardware and try it out.
I still use openbsd for my servers and firewall though.
Anyone seen Johnny Mnemonic Sure it was just a movie made out of the RPG Shadowrun (IMO) but it was a fun little movie. The cause for NAS (nerve attenuation syndrome) is said by Spider to be information and technology overload. Just watch out for anyone with the black shakes, they are probably some white collar corporate grunt. Also watch out for the street preacher.
Of course they will be secure... on your screen is secure, especially if there are people you don't trust around you. It's good to have the answers to your "secret questions", that sites ask you in case you forget your password, displayed on your screen. Mother's maiden name, pets name, name of your left testicle/tit, etc.
I don't see any legality issues on this and ethics, well you want to talk about ethics of spammers?
basically spamd is going to waste resources of open mail relays and spammers who spam directly from their computers. Besides bandwidth, how is anyone else in the world affected? If you get your e-mail from a mail server that is also an open relay, well than I say you got whats coming. Chances are that server will get blacklisted and you may not receive your mail due to other anti-spam solutions you use (if you have any or your ISPs).
OTOH I also believe that spam is not illegal, just highly immoral. Just like all the spam I get in the postal mail (mostly credit card applications), you know what I do? I take the postage paid envelopes and mail back goofy things to them like Taco Bell hot sauce, openbsd boot disks, the forms from different credit card company's application, wads of paper dots from the hole-punchers, miscellaneous paper trash from the office, notes about how stupid the applications are, the actual form they send but I check the box that says "I have a new address, cross off the below and write your new address" box and change it to their own mailing address, or other fun things I think of at the time. Hey, this helps the us postal office get money because they are getting paid for all the mail I send back, while the credit card company's pay for it.
Well I have news for you buddy. I work as top level technical support for an ISP and we support any kind of situation that we are able to. NAT, real IPs network, wireless, etc. If we don't know how to configure a nat/router (or can't figure it out over the phone) we send them to the manufacturer.
Hell one time I helped someone configure a DSL router from Netgear that terminated the dsl itself (not using a Cisco 67x or other products like Actiontecs). I didn't even know Netgear made these things. Of course I work for a really really really cool ISP and I get all my networking needs for free like dsl, dns, e-mail, web, colocation, t-1 (can't afford the local loop to the phone company for a t-1 otherwise you know I would have a one!). Back to my point anyways... ISPs like this do exist as I work for one.
While understanding what you mean and where you are coming from... you are suggesting Theo change his ways. I have been subscribed to misc@openbsd.org for over a year now and I firmly believe that Theo knows what he is doing even if he lost this money. He stats in a later thread on the misc mailing list that this is actually for the better in the long run (could have happened at a slightly better time like 1-2 months in the future for the purpose of the hotel/hackathon)...
lets all talk about how it's a dupe because that is so much more important and entertaining just like picking at pimples on my ass. Jeez, you'd think people take personal offense to a dupe story. It is a friggin website not a goddamn way of life... calm down, have some dip and enjoy the stories.... or go somewhere else.
Hmmm... he makes zero on the apparel line because of the cost to produce is too high unless you buy bulk. Well if they don't sell, you sit on a pile of clothes and eat the cost. Theo says the clothes basically pay for themselves at that's it. He also has recently said that CD sales have dropped hugely while FTP installs have sky rocketed. Mostly these differences have been noticed from US locations only.
you really think that even though they actually didn't give him any money at all???
to quote: "We were convinced OpenBSD was the best platform to use as a basis for further securing open source," said Jonathan Smith, a professor of computer and information science at the University of Pennsylvania.
Because DARPA does not directly fund projects outside the United States, it is Mr. Smith's computer science department that received the grant, although most of the money -- $2.3-million -- flows through to Mr. de Raadt's project."
But I am sure your mind was just wandering while you read that part. I am sure you really read the article before posting. This place shouldn't be called slashdot, it should be called "jump to conclusions mat.com"
You're only half right about this The job of television programming is to entertain. It is NOT the job of television programming to propagandize.
Their job is to keep an audience glued to screen so they watch the commercials so show gets credited with people buying products/services thus making their commercial time more valuable and increasing the flow of money to their pockets.
They produce what will make money. If they can make money propagandizing, then that is what they'll do. If they can make money by bringing up issues of sexuality, race, etc (hinting at and/or innuendos) then that is what they'll do.
I have only seen one Enterprise episode in my life I want those minutes back. Archer, chasing a bat with butterfly nets along with the doctor guy then crying over his goddanmed beagle beacuse of some alien shit made me want to punch him in his fucking face until my fist hits the floor thru his skull. How in the world is this show even tolerated? The commercials were way more interesting.
Ahhhhhhhh, front page. Working as tech support for an ISP, there is only a couple things I hate more than Front Page users. Of course I have stories but now is not the time for those. Congratulations with your father BTW. I am one of the lucky ones; my father teaches computer courses in his spare time, so I came from a computer literate family.
If you are interested in OpenBSD's security, than use OpenBSD. OpenBSD didn't get as good as it is by copying someone elses code and features, they developed their code from the ground up with security (code correctness) in mind from the start. Of course they did not develop all of the code in the system, but they did create a lot of cool security practices (create really isn't it either, more like 'strictly adhered to'). With things like ProPolice, systrace, chrooting more, good clean code, PF (great program), suid reduction, strong documentation, etc, and last I checked, OpenBSD supported more platforms than Debian, why not try OpenBSD?
why not? you pay for your bandwith right? Why should you not be able to run a server or run limewire or run your own isp off that bandwidth? "Personal" is not definitive. It is just a casual term that can resolve into different meanings. Look from ISP to ISP and see that a lot are not going to define "personal account" the same way.
If I pay for a 1.5/meg line of any kind, I should be able to use 1.5/megs of that line at any time and in any way (provided it is not against a law of the state, country, etc).
Restriction of information comes in many ways. This is just a more clever scheme to restrict information, IMO.
I'll tell you how we deal them, we unplug them from the network if they don't handle their own shit. We (not twtelecom.net) host some of Jasc's servers so when they release a new version of Paint Shop Pro, we get some serious traffic spikes for a couple of hours, so we know which colo's will be using big bandwidth. You should see the people calling in when all of a sudden their box drops of the planet. Of course during the SQL fuckup there were many many boxes that were unreachable before we started unplugging them. Why ms sql anyway people????
its users submitting spam they received to be blacklisted not users sending spam. I work for an ISP and I deal with spam every single day. typically you can send/forward spam to abuse@ISPDOMAIN to be blacklisted or to make complaints about spammers who are subscribers to the ISP.
Although it does seem like a lot of spam originates FROM Aol users. I think @aol.com should be on all the RBLs in the world.
You have your own opinions about the books, movies, etc and I have my own.
To answer your question:
Apparently you will never be an entrepeneur or business exec in modern america because you don't have that incredibly strong desire to harvest as much money from as many people as you possibly can no matter the cost (unless it gets to blatantly illegal, maybe not even then though) for as long as possible. If you had the ganas, it not be hard to understand why things are the way they are here in This Modern World
There are many disputes over this topic on the openbsd misc mailing list. The lead developer of MBSD, Outback Dingo, claims all modifications which violate the copyright were unintentionally done. There is fairly good circumstantial proof that it was intentional because of examples like:
where they state they are the developers of OpenSSH
where their sendbug command e-mails gnats@openbsd.org
man release..... "See http://www.openbsd.org/anoncvs.html for
instructions on fetching the sources for the first time...."
I enabled Apache and much to my surprise the page had OpenBSD logo's with
"MicroBSD" alt tags!
You get the idea. If you have the OS (I am sure it will be available somewhere, check the mirrors still) read '$man 1 banner' for a good laugh, from Miod Vallat
is peanut butter, you know when you have to stir it up because all the oil is sitting on top or else it will be thick and unspreadable. Of course it's funny when you give the dog (or I suppose cat but I can't imagine that being as good) a spoonful of PB and stick it to the roof of their mouth. Totally hilarious while s/he works on it for a good 20mins to 2hours.
CompuGlobalHyperMegaNet created by Homer Simpson and purchased by Gill Bates. I expect Microsoft will be sending over a barrage of lawyers any minute to discuss their company name and their domain name.

Of course it sas Windows Timeline but it is not all Windows. And MS didn't have anything to do with DOS until version 6.2 or whatever.

my favorite windows software Back Orifice (now BO2K). With the butt plug(ins). Had a blast when that first came out. Remote administration made easy.

How long are they going to be testing going to be testing this before it would be ready for actual use actual use?
