About 3 years ago the shoutcast stream i'm affiliated with ETN.FM moved everything up to Canada, and got ourselves declared as a not for profit organization. Since this is just a hobby and no one is making cash from it, it afforded us a greater ammount of legal protection than we could ever hope to receive inside the US. There was some problems gaining the non-profit status, but it wasn't too difficult.
Wow, lets add another thing to second life to further lag things out. Recently an "update" was rolled out which added quicktime movie support to objects in game. Pretty nifty concept, except when people go outta control and put 20 automatically running Hillary Duff music videos inside the same piece of land, then its nothing but lag-fest.
Can't wait to see what happens with it when the HTML contains a ton of animated images, or annoying popups.
SuSE Live CD. I've found it has better general hardware support (don't want it to coredump on someone) and the default program pack does a pretty good job.
Cute, but after 3 years of watching someone waste time and wonder why, you pick things up along the way. I've been treated to far too many 'Today on neopets...' stories than I need to.
Have to back you up on this. The BD is pretty darn fun and is the only part of the site I play with. As for age group, I would say the average NP user (who didn't lie about their age as that is a MAJOR issue) is 14-25. Yes, 25. Also, when you sign up for an account, if you don't lie about your age and you are 16 years old, you need to fill out a parental consent form and mail it to NeoPets if you want to unlock large segments of the site.
So my girlfriend is addicted to neopets and over the last 3 years I've had a pretty good view of the site. This story is pretty much uninformed. The gambling games make up about 4% of the total games on the site. Your pet only goes to the adoption agency if you do not play with it and it gets unhappy with you, actually sitting there ignoring your pet playing gambling games will hasten this, but not cause it. NeoPoints (the in-game currency) are very easy to come by, and 15-20 minutes of playing any of the other 96% of the games the player has between 5-10k worth, which is enough to pretty do whatever you want for over a month or two.
So whats to stop the kid from going to yahoo games and playing blackjack there?
Just sit at home playing games not returning her calls, when she asks what you were doing, lie and say something like 'explosive diarrhea' or something and she'll leave it alone.

Wouldn't the world of mini-computers do well by using Crusoe based systems? Having just seen how small and full featured the Sharp "laptop" that is based off it is, why can't these micro machines be Crusoe 1Ghz based, with a fair bit of ram and a decent video card. Because there is no LCD slapped on, a whole bunch of space is saved there, with a little more effort and thought, you could basically create a micro PC that used no fans, little power, and is far better than 266Mhz.
Aren't all the problems being discovered now because of lack of funding? Durning the Clinton era, NASA was raped and thus they lack the people and the money to be looking at things like these. Come on, the crawlers are incredible pieces of machinery, unlike anything in the world. To assume that they could provide 30 years of use and not have problems is absurd.
The staff of google seems to have a nice lightheared stance on things, and example being the recent April Fools "technology release", as well as repeated alterations to the google banner. Do you feel actions such as these help to lighten the spirts of a team of people who much be under great pressure to deliver.
All they are doing is using information from WHOIS to farm for new clients. It's spam, I didnt register with them, yet they are telling me all about how my domain is about to expire and all the wonderful options available to me to prevent this from happening. It's sad to see a someone as large as Verisign fall to such low tactics to farm new clients.
Quite possible, they do have a "My Computer" and "Network Neighborhood" icon layout feel to it. MS really hasnt cracked down on people like our friends at Mac over the Aqua stuff, but you know they are just holding on to something like this in case there ever becomes a true competition problem between them.
I'm not sure if I read it correctly, but did it read that the basic LX install did NOT include the source code? So are they shipping a version that violates the GPL? I did see that the upgraded more expensive version includes 3 additional CD's, with one of them being marked as the source code disk. Could someone clear this up for me?
One thing to keep in mind is the upkeep cost of the setup over it's lifetime. A 3-5 year period of operation is an eternity in computing. Going to a thin client setup means to be able to stay paced with advancements in software is going to require extensive, and VERY expensive upgrades server side. In practice I've noticed that every 2 years the RAM required to run a standard PC doubles. Initiallly you're going to require somewhere in the range of 64megs server side per thin client on the table. Assume 100 clients, thats 6.4gigz of ram initially. 2 years down the line you're talking 12.8gigz of ram. Something else to consider is bandwidth. Does your intranet have the pipe to handle that many open sessions without bogging down? This is the problem that killed the company I work for and our attempt at switching to thin clients. We ran a very small setup (10 boxes) on a switched 100base network. Having each client up and running at any given time used around 40-60% of our available pipe. In retrospect while the idea of the thin client is perfect for a schools use (software control for all clients at a central location and whatnot) the overhead needed to keep it active was really not worth our effort, we returned all 10 as well as the server back to who we got it from after only a month.
You took the roll on Star Trek at a young age, and we watched you grow up in front of the camera. Did you feel like an outcast in any way because of the large age gap between yourself and the other key players on the show? Was it difficult not being able to go out with "the guys" after filming for a drink, or being able to get into any parties (if there were any) because of your age?
Having seen this request a day ago on TechTV I fowarded it to some friends who do software for Citrix, the company will be giving all the licenses required as wellas offering to send tech's to NYC to assist.
I think/. is right to start to move on. This even will not be forgotten anytime soon, and will continue to get more airplay than MASH reruns. If the entire nation spends to next week glued to their TV's, watching every single video they can find on the net and not going to work (or at work and just abusing company time) we will only hurt ourselves more. This stuff is important. Greater storage and faster access is vital to the growth of the industy that led to slashdot's creation. America has NOT shut down, news stories such as this may be squelched out because of recent events, and will never go noticed no matter how important.
I am more willing to bet it's because many of these people are too impatient to go try to aquire the item themselves. Why work your way up to big man on campus when for $200 you can be
there instantly and be the envy of all your friends. Because of this it has created a supply and demand, which made the market for these items. Too many people don't want to actually play the game on battle.net to increase their character, that takes time to get good, and to hang with the big boys, so for a small one time investment you can become pimp.
Sure, it starts off with poopoo and pee-pee, give it a little while and the thing with start on with:
"I have an army to raise and I must get to Managua, I require a window seat and an inflight happy mean. And No pickles! God help you if I find a pickle!"
When it starts making plans to take over the world, then it'll be fun conversation.
I love how CNN never puts any hardcore tech info
on their stories. Some explanation of what kind of machine HAL runs on, or perhaps some insite into how it works.
Could not something like this be done at an ISP level? With simple monitoring finding an infected machine could be done quickly, then the machine is removed from the network or it's outbound traffic is disabled while either the ISP calls the client or an automatic email is sent telling them of the problem? It's not a virus at all so it would be legal, and the only downside would be a temporary loss of service until the sysadmin of the infected machine gets off his ass and downloads the patch thats been blasted on the tv/paper/radio for the last 2 weeks. People may complain that denying inet service to them because their machine is infected is a bad idea, but in a sense they are as bad as the virus creater themselves when they knowingly continue to let a machine run thats spreading a potentially very evil bug to spread.
While it would be nice to be able to get decent books at far lower then market price (average paperback going for over 6.99 nowdays). But come on, does anyone really think that the format will not be hacked/cracked within hours of it being released? Everything anyone has ever tried for something like this has been gotten around. Look at DeCSS for example, or the countless Serial # systems that software makers produce to try to prevent someone from cracking it the day it comes out. It's a good theory, but can it be done correctly?
It's great to see someone being creative with handheld gaming systems. I remember the post
from awhile back of the guy who took an Atari 2600
and fit it down to handheld size. Now can someone come up with something for me to do with this Sega Gamegear or this Atari Lynx that I got sitting around?
Star Office is the way to go. After what I saw how much crap Office 2k installed onto my machine I felt it was time to find somethign else. Sun has a GREAT product with Star Office, but it does have a rather slow runtime and a high memory usage. But it is platform independant, and therefor taking things from home to the schools unix/linux machines is rather easy being everyone is a happy member of the Star Office family.

Thank you to everyone who cleared that up for me, swift kick to the head to the European Faggot guy..... totaly uncalled for.
