    This is Slashdot, if you don't have Skype, Vonage or something similar, then close your account and go somewhere less geeky.

    (I'm not really sure how to close your account here, I'm guessing you could always do something amazingly extremely horrible and get banned. Graphically incinuate something involving Tux, Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer, Steve Jobs, Linus Torvalds, various members of Taco's family and a Mac Classic...I'm betting that would do it.)

    You might have a point, negative reviews are one thing, but a call in campaign to the EA main office to file a complaint might do wonders.

    Especially if it's repeated on a reasonable basis, say weekly.

    I'll second the notion that iTunes for Windows is a steaming heap of crap.

    You're being mean to crap everywhere.

    iTunes on Windows is on par with Realplayer, complete and total shit. Treat it like you would a virus, kill it. Avoid installing it.

    If you have to install it then use VMWare. VMWare traps the itunes shitstorm quite nicely.

    I'm actually surprised that we don't see any vigilante developers actually developing something that in some way or another disable or display information about the serious state the infected machine is in.

    As a network admin, I would love to see someone write code to destroy the boot sector of an infected machine and then run a shutdown. (No data is lost, but the system is offline)

    As a system admin, I would hate to see code out there that does damage to any process on the system, infected or not.

    As a developer, I won't go anywhere near that type of software.

    As an end user, I want better antivirus with better alerting that doesn't require a full core of my processor to run.

    Well that goes without saying. DB is on RAID 10, backed up to phone whenever docked, USB stick nightly and external HDD weekly.

    Seriously, besides by local logins (and keepass password), all my other passwords are random hashes stored in keepass.

    Of course, I'm tied to keepass, but I figure since it's ported to all my systems up to and including my cell phone, I'm not too worried.

    A related exercise is: with over 1.2M slashdot UIDs issued over a period of 11 years, how many of those users are deceased? The worldwide mortality rate of 9.5/100,000/year suggests about 600 UIDs are "pushing up vaxes". Come to think of it, I haven't been attacked by some of my foes in a while.

    I'm trying to come up with some witty comment about Twitter (and his sock puppets) here, but darn it, I just can't think of anything.

    Well, that might be what most people think it is today, that's not what they were designed to be and I personally think it's way past time to start reigning them back in.

    US Corporations are supposed to be beholden to the people of the US. People tend to forget this, especially people who run large corporations.

    Corporations are a structure designed by the people to better their society. Corporations have no rights other than those granted to them by the people via the government. Corporations are not people. Corporations that do not follow the law can and should be dismantled.

    I did in the end, but he complained about not being able to install things. Also, I didn't have the time or energy to start playing with mac remote desktop solutions. So the mac (PPC) is in the corner and he has a new Core 2 Dell system running Vista.

    Switched my Father from pc with XP to Mac to pc with Vista. I had more problems with the Mac, I don't know how, but he would ruin that box, monthly.

    With Vista, I basically took away his access to everything admin related and I can remote in if he needs help or wants to install some card game he bought at staples.

    OK, I'm a zealot, but if you mostly use a computer to browse the web and get email and write an occasional document buy a Linux computer.

    Why not just buy a WebTV then? At least if you're running Windows you can go to circuit city or best buy and get some software for it.

    I recommend TrueCrypt for the average home user, but Bitlocker's AD integration makes it a no-brainer for a Windows network. If you don't have a TPM laptop, then you can use a thumb drive. The Bitlocker certificate is just a text file on the thumb drive. Just keep the thumb drive and the laptop away from eachother when not booting, losing both together doesn't offer any protection.
