I have been trying all weekend to re-install Windows 2000 without getting a worm before I finish downloading the security updates. I have tried to do that three times so far but have failed each time
Really, this is absolutely shocking. The next time I hear anyone mention anything about linux not being ready for the desktop; i'll be directing them to this post. It seems to me that stuff like this just is not exposed to the people that pay the bills. If windows is really this awful that it gets infected before the installation is even complete I'd have to question why on earth are people paying the money to run it on their systems.
Well now that they have decided to sell their own anti-virus software, what better than to create demand for it by developing a new browser platform in order to extort AV software sales....
Here's the kicker microsofts AV software will patent the removal of certain M$ originating viruses in such a way that the only way you can remove them without breaching the eula and various patent laws is to use Microsoft AV 2005 Personal Edition (tm).
I think that you have to make a decision like this on a case by case basis. When it boils down to the bare essentials, life is life, and life will do its best to spread unto the far reaches of the universe, by hook or by crook, with or without us. Is it right not to seize the opportunities for our race to achieve this? My own personal belief is that it is our duty and responsibility, not just for us but for future generations to explore and spread our seed where ever it can be sown. That said we should endeavor to do this in a sensible and responsible manner and do our utmost to achieve our goals in harmony with the universe around us.
Well, I agree, however I do feel that in terms of AV software being supplied with the OS; If it were supplied with the OS, then it really shouldnt be termed AV software. Rather the OS should have the holes patched up in the first place so that viruses are not an issue.
I think that is incredibly short sighted. Think about it... What you are saying effectively is this. The operating system should be secure in the first place, for the manufacturer of "Said OS" to supply Anti-Virus software is effectively admitting that they know "Said OS" has security flaws and rather than improving the OS, via patches and updates, instead they are charging you extra money to pay for inadequacies that they know about. This is abuse of power plain and simple.
This is such a damn coup! If selling anti-virus software becomes a revenue generator for microsoft they are effectively saying that their operating system will never be secure, because the moment they make windows secure they cut of demand for their anti-virus software sales. This, is as good a reason as any to ditch Redmond as ever their has been.
What I dont really get about this, is that if a quantum computer can be simulated using normal computers, then whats the big deal about quantum computers in the first place? Of course there are all the textbook theories about the benefits of a quantum computer etc. But my limited understanding of quantum physics suggests to me that
a) its impossible to simulate a quantum computer this way. and b), if it is possible then it cant possibly behave in the same way as a real one.
My thoughts exactly I was dissappointed when I saw it to be honest. Dont get me wrong its a fair case mod (although Im not to keen on the flourescent green). But it doesnt bear a huge resemblance to orac apart from the fact that its transparent.
To be perfectly honest, it depends how rich you are. At the end of the day when it comes to buy now, buy later; the state of technology generally speaking is that in most cases (particularly with computer hardware) after only a short period of time , whatever technology you invest in becomes obsolete.
From my own personal point of view, my dual athlon 1.5ghz is still holding out beautifully. When the cash comes my way Im banking on a powerbook. Truth is I dont need another desktop just yet. However if i had a stupid disposable income, and one that predictably would hold out till these dual cores come out id proabably get one now, and get one later.
When I built this machine I bought the highest spec parts I could afford at the time and I havent upgraded for 2 or 3 years aside from upgrading the graphics card. The rule I live by is get the best available that you can afford at the time and it should keep you going for a good while.
Im running gentoo box; faster processors would be very nice for source compiles but I gave up on churning out seti blocks a while ago and dont have a massive reason for further processor power...
Okay, fair dinkum RIAA, I will give you free advertising; In fact you dont even have to supply me with tunes; Ill rip them myself and play them to my friends; Hey maybe since Im advertising your tunes for free, maybe you could offset the cost by reducing the price of CDs...
"There is not one thing that Linux can do that Windows cannot"-- How about the fact that I dont have to pay for it ; and by that I mean it in the legal sense of the word.

Last time i looked its top of the list at codeweavers. Id expect it'll be working in the next release.
There are some good clones out their my personal favorite is Juk; although Amorok is quite good i find Juk to be more friendly- its meta-tag editing system is simply awesome.
The main issue really as i see it is syncing the ipod to your tunes database, i think this is largely a manual command-line affair; someone else would have to comment on that though as i'm unsure.
I think its interesting that Sony are looking at linux more and more. It seems to be a general process i think when companies try, and see the benefits of linux they then begin to use it in different packages. Its like many linux users will say I tried linux x-years ago and never looked back. Once you've tasted of the fruit its hard to stop!
I heard that Sony are stopping production of the clie... I wonder if they have something more exciting in the pipeline? eg: take one PSP re-form-factorize into pda; slap QT / Opie (or desired linux based pda distro) and hey presto... a killer PDA.
Well, thats really going to piss Darl off isnt it ? Having just announced "major product wins" with MacDonalds in his quartlerly statement... Woo Hoo !
Darl McBride:"Linus Torvalds proposed developer certificate of origins system validates the concerns and problems we have expressed for the past year that the linux development process has been fraught with opportunities for illegal contributions of code with minimal checks and balances. We beleive it is in part because of this unchecked process that SCO code has improperly made its way into linux."
For example win98 , its hardly bloatware by todays standards but back then ? Compare that to whichever linux distro was out at the time and it isnt difficult to guess which is going to come out better. Linux distributions will hopefully continue to be more streamlined and less resource hungry than the M$ offerings. What do people think about OSX ? bloaty ? or not? ( I suspect the latter despite the eye candy...)
Isnt it funny how geeky we all are ? I mean heavens above! they develop some "really cool" technology to create this uber-stealth ship using fancy carbon fibre techniques etc. And the first thing we do (myself included) is pick up on the use of an aging, buggy and unsupported operating system (Win NT). I just think its amusing ; someone ought to do a study on our behavior here at slashdot. They cant get everything right!
Why not dismantle one of those robotic hoovers and attatch it to a black and decker flymo?
The obvious question is of course is ..
I windows ready for the command line yet?

Just think how rich Microsoft would be if they sued every Tom - Dick and Harry who makes deflammatory remarks about them....

Maybe he could have put that box to better use by hosting his website on it.

Nope, i think that they should be banned for making operating systems completely.

Just how far can they take this monopoly?

An interesing transcript from that torrent ...

I was basically about to say the same thing; The real beauty of linux is you can have it as streamlined or as resource hungry as you want.
What about the cool things in the story?
"A lot of modern submarines are extremely hard to detect, but that is always going to be difficult for a surface ship to match."
