Microsoft will begin selling a $50 music player that will 'look and feel as good as the iPod' later this year.

Well thats great, but id personally prefer a player that sounds as good, and performs as well as the iPod rather than one that "looks and feels" like one. With a 50quid price tag it will either be horrendously locked in (so that they can make money back from the songs) or the capacity will be so small that it becomes inconvient for people with large collections.

And i'd be very surprised if the "Gives more choice to consumers" part means anything more than WMA support, I would be prepared to place money on the fact that flac and ogg support are not included in that "more choice" line up...

The one thing I dont understand is the high cost of certain Linux based PDA's. Given the cost saving on the operating system licensing surely that should be passed onto the consumer. The hardware itself isnt radically different from PocketPC based devices which in general cost less. Sooner or later I'll be in the market for a PDA but i dont think I should have to pay extra for the privelege of not having to use a Microsoft based one.

The real question is out of the newer specification PDA's which ones can be re-flashed with Linux and work as well as the sharp offering ? I suppose a palm based device might be an alternative but i want my bash shell and dev tools to boot .

, what hope is there for innovation in CSS, SVG, XHTML and other web standards?

I'd say there is a good hope, Longhorn/IE will undoubtably break / embrace and extend web standards, probably offering some "revolutionary technology" which is infact a rehash of an existing standard butchered and twisted to work only in IE.

Is the future of the web similarly tied to Internet Explorer and Longhorn?

I sincerely hope not. Now is the time for web-developers to start building with upcoming standards and tools. Id like to see all browsers fully supporting SVG for a start. In this interim period of no new IE versions we have the ability to build and popularise the technologies that are available to us before they get the IE poisoning. It is, after all the tools developers decide to use that drives the future, and by pushing boundaries innovations can be realised.

Network play of films is quite good but some of the higher resolution ones can make the PS2 struggle a bit. I'd suspect that playing movies from a CD, and having an actual cartridge developed to do this specifically would eliminate these problems though. Ill probably get this cartridge if and when it comes to the UK.

  19. OS dependancy? on Can Mozilla-Based Browsers be Hijacked? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Im sure if one hacks around hard enough a security hole can be found in any browser. I'd like to hope the non-bloat nature of Mozilla and its open-source goodness would ensure to an extent that its inherently very secure, and that potential holes are fixed rapidly. However I think that one also has to take into account the operating system the browser is running on and whether any Mozilla exploits are dangerous accross different platforms. My guess is that though Mozilla is enjoying a good market share at the moment, any exploits that may arise are going to target the operating system, in most cases that will be Windows. Its pretty dificult to run arbitrary code on linux or OSX without being very stupid.

Even so, using Mozilla on windows is a sensible thing to do from a security perspective since it provides another layer of security. IE, is so tied into the OS in this regard, but Mozilla is more of a seperate entity.

I dont think Linus or anyone else has tried to conceal or hide the origins of linux. Anyone who has taken more than a passing interest in the history of linux knows that Linus got interested in kernel development while hacking Minix which was supplied in source code form in an educational book called "Operating Systems: Their design and Implementation". Rebel Code (Glynn Moody) is an excellent history of linux and open source and a great read. If people are interested in getting a good background its a great place to start.

I think its fair to say that "shock horror!" Andy Tanenbaum probably "learned" how to write Minix from somewhere else. In any case in the initial phases of Linux I think its fair to say that Linus did 99% of the work. And after the seed was planted.. well lots of people are now involoved with writing linux.

Its the nature of the beast almost all human acheivements are adaptations of something that came before . Its called development and its incredibly difficult to come up with an idea that doesnt have its basis in something else.

I challenge anyone to try and come up with an idea that doesnt have its origins in something else.

Over zealous, i know... But i wonder if this scenario might happen? Once XNA gets deployed and we get "OEM" Consoles the diversity of different consoles is going to be a complete headache for developers. Just as game studios test PC games on a range of different spec PC's, now they are going to end up doing it for different consoles. If this technology becomes a success a couple of years down the line game studios are going to regret the decision to go with it. From a consumers perspective I think that this might also drive to cost of consoles higher, id expect the super fast, expensive juicy consoles to be more expensive than the not-quite-as good ones. Gone are the days where one-game-fits-all (which IMHO is one of the great benefits of console gaming). And I really dont like the idea of having to check to see if my console meets the specs of the latest game each time i go in the store. The only people here that win are Microsoft and OEM Manufacturers. I wish that Microsoft had never got into the console arena because they are going to f*kin ruin it.
