For me the C64 Sid Chip music was as much important to me as the rest of the game. Im just wondering if this thing will include a real SID?
World stocks of SID's are practically out, the Elektron SidStation (a SID based midi groovebox) bought pretty much all the remaining stocks from wherever they came from.
It would be nice to think that the Sid was going back into production again in some form. But I suppose if it did, it would not quite be the same, I doubt if they could source authentic capacitors for the filters for a start. but heck I can hope! Even so, this thing would be worth buying for that chip alone.
"There is nothing that precludes us from taking the protocols we license from Microsoft and incorporating them into our products. Now, where those products run is up to Sun. So, if we take a license from Microsoft, there's nothing that precludes us from incorporating that technology into our Java Desktop System. "
How about the undoubtable fact that somewhere in the license from Microsoft it is made explicitly clear exactly who is in control of where those products run
Google's search results are not "paid for". In this sense it means that the results are fair and everyone has a good crack at the whip. Paid "Ad's" are not search results they are keyword search targetted, They are also clearly seperated from the real search results and are unobtrusive.
It seems to me that AXA are trying to sue Google because they aint happy with their search ranking. Could this be a new frontier in influencing search results by threatening legal proceedings?
I think that google should under no circumstances allow anybody to influence their search ranking results directly through paid advertising, suing or otherwise. In the end allowing this to happen would be its downfall.
Of course there are other ways of influencing googles search results (we all know about the litigious bastards episode!). But these tricks of the trade are available to everyone, Google's search algorithm will evolve and be tweaked all the time to filter out blatent abuse. So long as everybody has the same chances it will remain fair.
I think it works both ways, if you can defeat the chesser by being more skillful, the cheeser will soon learn that his cheesy tactics are not working anymore. It is at this stage that the cheeser must learn to use a less cheesy approach and thus learn more skills if he wants to win! Thats how the learning process works.
I Just read the article, and to be honest it doesnt seem to offer anything significantly different from what WINE offers (other than the removal of bug-level compatibility). Linux users have been able to use M$Office applications fine for some time now. Its a great publicity stunt for Linux (Wine is relatively unknown amongst non-linux users). Id have liked a bit more technical information about the system.
There doesnt seem to be any information as to whether this is an open source project or not. My suspicion is that it will be a non-free system.
queries the "expensive process of habitual upgrades" by suggesting: "If everybody turns to an Xbox or a PlayStation for entertainment, who's going to need new PC equipment?"
I think that this is going to be more and more relevant as next-gen consoles come into being.
For me personally its more convenient to buy a ps2 game stick in the machine and play it. I dont have to consider whether or not my PC is up to spec to play it. I also like the way that with a console, all the games are configured for the same controller. Apart from the occaisional game of Vice City , I hardly use my linux box for gaming. The console is also more sociable than the PC which tends to sit in the back room.
I dont mind the seperation of PC and Gaming console and find that the idea that one is for work/education and the other is purely for fun. I kinda like that distinction.
Its funny how you removed the emphasis on the word one. I made it bold , like this, one because I was trying to make a point that im fully aware that it wasnt the sole reason for this. Also because i knew some idiot like you wouldnt read it properly and make a snyde remark.
Even with the emphasis on the word one you still managed to read it incorrectly, and in the process removing the emphasis when you re-quoted me. I said it was one of the contributing factors asshole, not the sole reason.
Instead you ended up exposing your inability to read properly even when key words have been emphasized for your benefit.
If people NEED to pirate their software does that mean they are forcing people into doing so?
No! Of course it doesnt. Its because so many people have this half assed attitude that they NEED to have a specific piece of software that companies will continue charging extortionate prices and all the rest that goes with it. What each and every one of you is doing is increasing the userbase, ensuring that their products continue to dominate the market. What im talking about here is that people should not need to commit an illegal act in order to use this software. It should be cheaper or they should use alteratives. Vote with your wallet, support those that need your support and not those that are trying to rip you off. You are just exacerbating the situation.
Adobe would be nowhere near what they are today if Photoshop wasn't one of the most pirated pieces of software on the net.
That is exactly the point and you helped it get there. Downside is you had a hand in making it so expensive and in the process helped them to remove any competitors from the market.
You see, what you fail to realize is that its not Joe Consumer that makes companies big profits
Isnt this a bit of a contradiction? It seems to me that on one hand you are saying that all these people who have been pirating software have helping Adobe maintain there monopoly on photoshop, while on the other hand saying that joe consumer isnt helping them make big profits. Make your mind up! The truth is there plain to see.
Last of all piracy is a crime, thats right anybody who has a single piece of pirated software is a criminal. Most people dont care, maybe the law isnt right or whatever. But you can influence change. Support and use alternatives.
Or, in the case of people who are already in positions of power and are happily bleeding their customer base dry for every dollar they can get...
They just don't care.
Dont you think that people should be encouraged to care? Yes there are evil people in positions of power, instead of moaning about it I think that people should be encouraged to do something about it, IMHO piracy is a negative way to do this.
Your pithy personal attack may help you live longer but it won't make you a better person.
Get real dude this is only a website (chill winston!) I might be passionate about my views on this subject, and just because we have two differing opinions it doesnt make me a bad person or a good one. In fact Im sure the both of us could sit down enjoying a nice cold beer on a nice sunny day and get along just fine;)
I actually quite enjoyed this movie, the CGI , was wonderful and at times even forgetting it was all computer generated. Story wise an average run-of-the-mill sci-fi fodder. I've seen worse non-game related movies than this.
I've never played the final fantasy series to any great degreee but the film didnt seem to bear much resemblance to the games in anything other than name.
I also liked the Tomb Raider films, but then I quite like watching Angelina Jolies Bottom wiggling about;)
Maybe it has something to do with that company lobbying my politicians to use my tax money to put those products in my schools and make them part of my curriculum without ever asking me if I agree that their product is best suited for the task. They've already been given my tax money why should I have to pay for their product again at home?
Id just like to re-iterate the following in relation to that statement..
People just dont seem to be aware that their individual actions while seemingly insignificant on a personal basis are instrumental in shaping the way things work as a whole.
no need to comment on the rest of it as I didnt notice that you made any other particularly relevent points.
It doesnt matter which way you look at it. If you cant afford to pay for proprietary software then it doesnt make it right to pirate it.
While on one hand i can understand the activism side of it, and most people i know have at least one piece of pirate software. Pirating software is doing nothing in the long run to change the way the evil companies run their business. It does nothing to hinder vendor lock-in and pirated software is a hot house for the propogation of viruses etc.
People still continue to do it. Beleive it or not there is a whole world of software that is free to copy modify and do what the hell you like with. Its called Open Source and you can find software to fulfil most of your needs. Best of all its totally legal and having it is not going to get you arrested or locked up.
I remember the last time my boss instructed us to do a software audit many of my colleagues went through the annoying process of writing down license keys, removing "illegal" software, while i just sat there and did nothing, safe in the knowledge that my linux desktop contained nothing that needed to be accounted for.
Next time you think that you are making a statement by using pirated software, consider what you are really acheiving. If you really beleive in those virtues you should bite off your tongue and use the legal alternatives. This way you can harm the people you hate, and support the rest of us who are legally fighting the software war.
Reading this, it sounds like a very nice turnaround from IBM. Now it looks to me (IANAL) that SCO & Co. have the potential to be exposed for the evil no-gooders that they are. I can imagine the piles upon piles of Microsoft anti-linux related communication (or should i say fud?) that has accumulated with these companies over time. This could be the real meat that is needed to really shake up this monopoly led industry.
I've found the only way to build someone's trust is to continually demonstrate your good intentions and apologize for any mistakes you might make along the way.
So far though have we seen either of these prerequesites from Microsoft to any great degree?
Care to enlighten me where I stated that it was not possible to install other players and to where you plucked it from ?
I dont believe that i stated anywhere in my comment that it was not possible to install other media players.
My comment was aimed fairly and squarely at their monopolistic behavior and abuse of their position in the media player market, lack of open standards and through this undermining competition and fairness within the marketplace.
Naturally one wouldnt expect to buy shoes without the laces however; shoe laces are easy to remove and there isn't one single shoe manufacturer that (excuse the pun) ties shoe wearers into wearing a particular type of shoe. Also shoe laces from different manufacturers (including manufacturers that dont even make shoes) will work on any pair of shoes without requiring any modification to the leather e.t.c.
Its common sense really!
I'ts not the fact that there is or isn't a market for the built in media player, it is the methods and practices that they use to keep it there that is the problem. For example heres a contorted scenario. The porn industry. Imagine if M$ were stupid enough to make it so that WMP was unable to play porn movies. There would be a lot of pissed of breast worshippers about. The lack of choice and the vendor lock-in and the "we control you" attitude of microsoft is what this is about. Its about microsoft dictating to people should and shouldnt do with something that is essentially theirs.
All this about CD's not lasting very long is just FUD by the RIAA. In the next few years or so they will want to bring out a new type of media so that everybody has to restock their cd collection with the new media format.
Bottom line, buy cheap media then you will suffer the consequences. Buy decent media; buy a reputable brand and you can expect reasonable lifespan.
Hey, and wasnt this a dupe? albeit one with a twist ?
Indeed, if this rare occurrance could happen perchance, say 2004 years ago it truly would be a miricle birth. Maybe the lack off scientific understanding at that time would lead people to believe that the virgin mary had been impregnated by god.
I didnt think that this was really possible at all but having shown that it is; that miracle of birth as written in the bible maybe isnt such a miracle at all just a freak occurance that happend after thousands of generations human habitation of the earth.
If this were to happen again, would people believe that its just a rare and random parthenogenesis or would the world rise and aknowledge the second coming of the son of god?

God , Am i that old that option 2 is actually a possibility for some people ?
this must be the end of the line for me at 30 !
Hmmm .... will it have a proper SID chip in it?

Let me get some heat for this, but I use Windows in mission critical applications and Win 2K is not inherently unstable.
Thats an unusual logic. What kind of wackko reason would you have for using it in mission critical situations when you are aware of its instability?
