And maybe havent discovered the joys of suprnova and Bit Torrent.

Now I can watch movies, I never got round to seeing at the pictures, or movies that interest me but may not have got marvelous ratings.

There are also free, strictly legal movies available to watch from places if you look around. We have a small LAN i've set up at my home (I still live with my parents (Im a sad lonely geek)) so we share the broadband connection. My dad gets his kick from movieflix.com not really my cup of tea, but its there none the less.

Its not just about content either ... gone are the days of reconnecting 6 or 7 times before actually being able to browse the web.

Its also handy to be able to administer your box from work, or work from home (when not unemployed).

Besides in the UK, the cheapest Broadband is almost as cheap as the crappy dial up ISP's.

  11. All this Will Change ... on Games and the 'Geek Stereotype' · · Score: 1, Insightful

I think its true, Very little has changed in the games industry over the past few years. Hardware, graphics and sound have improved, but the games dont follow suit, rarely innovate or captivate.

Compare the latest Tomb Raider Game (Angel Of Darkness) to the original Playstation game for example. Wow!! its got nifty particle effects going on and lara now has Breast Inertia. The game itself however is nothing new, it breaks no new boundaries (other than technical ones) and the gameplay is the same (except they screwed up the control system and missed out all the cool things lara could do like light flares and drive vehicles)

But all this aside I beleive this must change. There will come a time when our console hardware reaches such unprecidented levels of realism it can go no further. There is only one thing left to improve when this happens and that is to think harder about the actual game itself.

There are plenty of people out there with fantastic ideas for game's but maybe dont have the skills or manpower to make it happen. I myself am forever dreaming up cool ideas, as I am sure are many other /.ers. Its up to the games companies to root these people out, and do something new instead of churning out the same old FPS games and cutesy 3D plaformers time and time again.

Sorry, I thought we were talking about the Software Industry...
Yeah, the home computing industry, once computers became a consumer product, software followed suit and became that. The two go hand in hand.

My initial point though was back in the humble beginnings the software Industry was a service industry, (going back to the original post!) The home computing industry is something different.

Again, this is not strictly true either, In the early days software was tied to the hardware, you paid megabucks for the whole deal, The bulk of the money that was made back then was made in much the same way as many commercial open source enterprises today, back then, software was a service industry, you couldt go down dixons and purchase software package X, you needed proffessional geeks in white lab coats to install and maintain your system. Video games were probably one of the first commercial ways that this mold was well and truly broken. Before that, Gates had his vision about every desk having a PC, and every home blah blah. Gates is a great businessman, but his company writes lousy software and because you buy it in a box off the shelf, you cant say to Billy Boy, This software doesnt work how "I" want it to, please make it do it like this; like you could back then.

Anyhow Im, straying from the point... the strictness of these Patents and DMCA bollocks is destroying choice, its not about stupid widget sets or someone's funky tear off menu. If someone somewhere doesnt get a grip on things pretty soon, things are going to get more and more Soylent Green.

One look at the monstrous blue screenshots , and the DOS prompt with a BSOD theme going on are enough to make me hurl.

It makes me remember that the original reason I moved to Linux was not because it was free or open source. The reason I moved was because I couldnt stand the windows operating system. Using various flavors of *nix at university and fun at home with my old Amiga taught me that Windows was a backward step, even all those years ago. Linux just has a much nicer architecture than Windows.
