That most likely because most OpenOffice users are savvy enough to know that the person on the other end might not be running OpenOffice. I Use OO all the time - but ill always convert to an M$ friendly format before sending them off to anyone. I will often also attach a PDF exported directly from OO - just in case.
Maybe that's the reason no-one has sent you an OpenOffice file
Indeed... What hardware are they using? - Writing drivers couldnt have been that high - otherwise it would have been cheaper just to by hardware that is known to work well with linux.
Before i say what i have to say , I would advise - doing your research before buying. There are plenty of places to find out whats good and what isnt. Its simple - you wouldnt buy new hardware for your windows PC without doing some research first.... would you ???? If you would then more fool you.
My point was - , The flip side to your comment is - actually Linux (I base this comment on Ubuntu specifically ) Linux "Just Works (TM)" too; I would argue that in fact Linux "Just Works Better (TM)" - if you buy hardware that you have researched into , you wont even need to install any drivers...
I find it archaic that stuff even comes with a windows driver disk in the first place.
I would also like to add that Linux in many cases has better support for hardware that windows - in particular with Legacy hardware - try running a recent version of Windows 7 or Vista on a machine thats more than a few years old - your results wont be too favorable. Conversely try connecting old peripherals to a new Windows PC and see how much fun you have trying to find working drivers for them. WORLD OF PAIN! .
And also none of those issues are actually anything to do with Linux per se except possibly the ISP issue - But that must be one heck of a strange use case networking is generally one of Linux strong points .
To claim that "Linux is a nice experiment but it runs about as poorly as Amiga OS (i.e. hard to find proper software)." is basically a load of crap
The way an operating system "runs" has nothing to to with being able to find proper software -- define "proper software" . Linux has a vast library of software - and with the use of Wine or VM software (such as VirtualBox) you can run any windows software that doesnt exist or are unable to find a replacement for.
Also - If you are comparing a recent Linux operating system to Amiga OS - and to suggest that Amiga OS runs poorly - Sure , its an old OS , but at the time it was vastly superior to what Apple or Microsoft had going at the time. I recently started refurbishing my old amiga 1200 with a few tweaks it boots as fast as , if not faster than my SSD based - core 2 duo laptop. I would not describe that as running poorly.
Your comments lead me to suspect that you might have tried an ancient version of Linux like 10yrs ago - had a bad experience , and since have not looked at it again.
For the record i use linux for all my needs at home and at work - as a desktop operating system and "It Just Works (TM)" - but then i use an up to date version of Ubuntu and did my research before buying the hardware (as a rule of thumb i stick with intel chipsets and avoid ATI graphics cards)
Having RTFA , It appears that they mention specifically the GPL. It does not however mention other Open Sources licenses.
If this is really true , then you can expect it to be quite some time before you find many software packages you would think might appear in a short time in the market place. Emulators for example - most of the ones we all use are covered by Open Source license - so dont expect ports of your favorite Open Source projects to appear on Windows Mobile 7. ScummVM , MAME... forget it...
You would be developing those from scratch - and these are projects that took years to come into fruition.
Microsoft would be making a huge mistake banning outright Open Source - and no matter how much they hate it - its an ecosystem they cannot afford to ignore - especially when they are trying to woo developers away from Android.
I have absolutely no problem whatsoever with Sony objecting to hacked consoles connecting to PSN - especially if they are being used to cheat or obtain content from the services illegally. If not for the benefit of legitimate players.
I do however have a problem with them removing features i payed a premium for OR penalising me for deciding against upgrading my vanilla - unhacked firmware.
So now I am without PS3 Linux because i wanted to access the PSN Store. I dont condone piracy , Im happy to buy games - In the past I had boxes of dodgy floppies on my Amiga , piracy was rampant on that platfom and that , together with the mal-management of Commodore and Amiga INC contributed to the demise of the system. Linux and open source takes care of my needs and where there is software worth purchasing i will buy it ( http://www.renoise.com/ ).
Having been a loyal Sony customer for so long im wondering where to go with my next console purchase, i already boycott Microsoft and Nintendo's cutesy game library (SuperZeldaMario World Galaxy 13 Yawn ) doesnt really appeal to me - although i am sorely tempted by the 3DS.
Just my opinion, I wouldnt touch Drupal with a barge pole. Really nasty set of code. Still , if you are forced into using it without looking at other PHP frameworks such as Symfony then maybe this book will help you find your way around it.
Not sure which console version you are talking about - or maybe i am misunderstanding you. Elder Scrolls: Oblivion does not have a "seperate" Open Chest button. on my copy you use the same button to open doors, locks, and talk to people.
The cross hair is context sensitive changing shape depending on whether the item underneath it is a NPC or other object you can interactive in the game. The action button on the PS3 (X) i think is the same button used for all these actions.
How does this work on a PC - The mechanism used in the console version sounds like it would be a no-brainer in conversion. Is it really that butchered ?
As far as i am concerned being Operating System agnostic is the key.
There will be a time when web based applications surpass their desktop counterparts. (There would be those who would argue in some areas it already has).
Being able to access my email on any device or operating system through Gmail (or whatever your poison) by doing nothing more than supplying credentials, is something that is a very good example and one which most of us couldnt live without. Particularly here on slashdot where most of us are gadget freaks.
The only thing i can imagine is that the proliferation of shitly programmed webapp's making use of the accellerated 3d might be more cause for concern.
I have Samsung Galaxy S, still stuck on 2.1 Eclair on O2.. an OTA update was promised , and that shitty Kies software doesnt seem to play nice with linux or on a windows VM.
My next phone will not be a Samsung unless they change their ways.
The holy grail surely is to not need CFW in the first place. I mean once you have a CFW on the PS3 , it would be be easier for Sony to do some sort of hash check against legal firmwares and detemine whether to allow access to online services etc. If the firmware is Stock Firmware thats much harder to do as you would have to verify anything that's installed on the console too - and thats a lot of potential variations.
Im not sure on this , but geohot's provided a homebrew file that can be run via the USB if you put the console in service mode. (hold some buttons down and turn the console on) - last time i checked service mode requires no dongle.
Perhaps that would be the way in ? eg: install your apploader as an application via service mode, on an unmodified firmware - then reboot. from that point on you can run the "apploader" from the XMB.
Would this mean that sony can no-longer lock out users of modded PS3s from things like the Store , etc? As , that was a feature that was also removed if the user continues to make use of the OtherOS function ?
In that touch screen interfaces are a burden to game design. "You're somewhat hampered by the touch interface—there's a lot of places where tactile controls really are better—but you can definitely do a lot."
Its possible to get creative - but it doesnt matter how many polygons NG smartphones can push - a touch screen is not a good interface for Doom 3 for example.
"now I am eager to see whether it is even possible to port such a demanding 3D game to Android" ;
It Is absolutely possible , let there be no bones about it. The hardware of latest iPhone is pretty similar to many high end android devices, in fact some Android devices actually have slightly higher specs in terms of horsepower.
Google have the market saturation now though - its time to reign things in a little bit and tighten things up. Perhaps they should consider some sort of hardware rating system to help developers and consumers have some sort of target to aim for. Better still have some dialogue with luminaries such as Carmack and find a solution.
Google, are you listening?.. DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS !!!!
There should be no reason for to be grumbling about things like this - I would at least hope Google should be listening to when people like John Carmack have something to say. Particularly when there is so much of an opportunity here when other Android devices start hitting the shelves eg: GoogleTV may be a much more viable gaming platform. I say Fix this Meme - as soon as possible - a little brown nosing might be in order.
Yep but 80-90% of iPhone games are pretty shit! or low-accurracy, puzzle , block/breaking type casual games.
You buy a dedicated device for gaming having a touch pad alone would be doomed to fail. iPhone and Android devices are more than capable of throwing out enough polygons to match the current generation of handheld consoles (There are some visually impressive FPS's out there ) . but as a gaming platform they suck even simple games like breakout just dont play well. I have to agree with Assemblerex on this one.
That said , in addition to the regular array of buttons / pads - a touch pad might be a nice addition as a complementary control element - but replacing them with just a touch pad is a big mistake.
Now all someone needs to do is write a virus containing a distributed bit-torrent server that "infects" users machine and there is jack shit they can do the ISP's wont have to be responsible for dealing with it.
That most likely because most OpenOffice users are savvy enough to know that the person on the other end might not be running OpenOffice. the list could go on...

I presume this would be covered by the Nouveau drivers?
These I believe are working on the Aros PPC port ... which begs the question .... wouldnt this be a lovely lightweight alternative to linux?

Hardly a reputable source - its a gutter rag.
That which apply to both Android and iPhone.

The fact that a touchpad can be patented just because it is on a different part of a device is ridiculous in the first place.
If its not Linux vs Windows , its Dogs Vs Cats - which is nice for a changes.
For the record i'm on the cat camp with this one.
OTOH - I do think it matters what breed of Dog ,
Sheepdogs / Border Collies for example are very intelligent . OTOH , Shelties are just plain stupid.
