Strangely, no Slashdot moderator have approved stories about Mandriva Linux 2008 Spring being released last week but they approve a story on a release candidate for next Fedora.
Looks like Slashdot want to favor some distributions.
Guess what. mozilla-firefox-1.0.6-15mdk shipped in Mandriva Linux 2006 contains ALL the security fixes from Mozilla Firefox 1.0.7. Next time, check the facts. Shame on you. Oh, and btw, we released a new security fix for Firefox yesterday, although Mozilla.org had not released a fixed Firefox yet.
No, I'm alone working on GNOME (with some help from Cooker people. And KDE folks at MandrakeSoft are the same number as me : 1 person..
We have NEVER provided binary packages for released distro for GNOME because this is not the way GNOME is distributing its stuff (there is no central repository, unlike KDE), Ximian is already doing some packaging and now, with GARNOME, you do get GNOME as soon as it is released..
There is only 24h in a day and I prefer to spend this time fixing bugs and improving cooker (aka next distro) than rebuilding packages for older distros.. Many Club members are already doing this through MandrakeClub.
We are not K-centric.. We are desktop agnostic.. But we always need to do a choice for newbies and currently, it is KDE..
But nothing prevent you to use GNOME instead (BTW, I'm GNOME packager at MandrakeSoft..). We always make sure all Mandrake features are available in both GNOME and KDE.
It simply doesn't fit our needs (and we have the same objections for KDE menu layout)..
And if you don't like Mandrake menu layout, run menudrake and choose "Original menu style" in Menu Style dialog.. You'll have to create a new foot menu on your panel, due to limitation in gnome-panel..
Have you report all your problems to MandrakeSoft ?
If not, Cooker Bugzilla is your friend (please, separate each problem in its own bug report).
If you don't report bugs, you can't be sure we will be able to fix them all !!
We are currently using gcc 3.1.1 branch + backport from 3.2 branch and we will switch to gcc 3.2 as soon as it is released (either this week or next week)..
If you read why the Mandrake 8.2 box was compromised, you'll see it is an human failure : the admin changed root password to a really stupid password (1234) for one hour (or so) when somebody was trying to check password..
BTW, this box is not even configured with maximum security level (Level 5) which would have prevent this attack but low security (Level 2)
No, we didn't "broke" Ximian.. Ximian is doing a repackaging of GNOME based on specific version releases.. It is up to them to upgrade to new versions of the distro, not Mandrake..

Don't worry, we already had integrate part of your work on VIA driver in Mdk 9.2 and we will finish integration for 10.0
This is STUPID !!
:
Do NOT use --force on urpmi..
urpmi --auto-select is enough to update older Mandrake distros to 9.2
Best way is to run
urpmi urpmi
urpmi --auto-select
urpmi kernel

You can drag'n'drop for cd burning :
install nautilus-cd-burner package (from cooker) and drag'n'drop files in 'burn:' in nautilus..
Then go to Applications/Archiving/CD Burning/Nautilus CD Burning to burn the stuff..

Upgrade IS working since 9.0..
You can either use DrakX (the installer) to do the upgrade or do it yourself using urpmi --auto-select.
Yes, it is.. Thanks to ntfsresize .

Somehow old (it doesn't contains all the latest tweaking) screenshot of Galaxy GNOME
Did you report your problem to MandrakeSoft ? If not, Cooker Bugzilla is your friend.
This is an somehow old screenshot of Galaxy GNOME theme.. There have been some little changes since but the screenshot is quite right..
You don't need apt-get on MandrakeLinux, just use urpmi instead..
Of course, if you were reporting those problems on cooker mailing list, it might be corrected for Mandrake 9.0 final..

You haven't use urpmi for a long time, haven't you ?
urpmi in Mdk 8.2 now open only one FTP connection for all file transfers and is able to resume FTP file transfert..
And your third problem usually happen when your hdlist is now longer in sync with available packages.
I think you should try Mdk 8.2 and report problems with urpmi if you have some..
If you want to donate money but don't want to take a membership, just go to http://www.linux-mandrake.com/donations/
Please, stop trolling with apt
Mandrake urpmi provides the same functionnalities than apt (the only missing feature currently is the autorecompilation of source package..)
Check the cvs, specfile used for kernel (with specfiles for all other packages) in there, with the patches..
for info, VM used is Andrea's VM//

False.
Mandrake Linux was based on Redhat 3 years ago.
It is no longer the case since Mdk 6.0 (if I remember correctly..)
