  1. re: YOU shouldnt tell them ANYTHING on Learning to Say No in the Workplace? · · Score: 4, Informative

this response is good as far as it goes, but what if you are the boss?

a former manager of mine let me in on his favorite response: tell them just what it will cost.

"OK, i can do that. however, if i do that now, as you request, it will require [# of people] about [period of time] to address properly. that means [x], [y] and [z] projects will slide b/c there aren't enough appropriate resources, the ramifications of which are 1, 2 and 3. this puts me in conflict w/ [manager 1], [manager 2] and [manager 3], all of whom were waiting for [period of time] until this is done. perhaps we should all of us should discuss this so my staff's allocation can be budgeted more effectively."

more often than not, the querant cannot take on one or more of [manager 1], [manager 2] or [manager 3] and it addresses about 90-95% of the issues that cropped up. the remainder of the time however, a discussion was needed and sometimes, the querant's issue was addressed.

this means that you absolutely have to have that information at your fingertips, if not at the tip of your tongue.

i believe distribution costs (e.g., printing up all the stock and shipping it to the many and sundry theatres) are not counted in the production budget of a movie. that is to say: titanic cost, what, US $100 million to make? this figure does not cover the cost to produce the thousands of reels (anybody know just how much many reels a 3 hour movie is?), get the insurance for the deliveries, and get 'em to the theatres.

it similarly doesn't cover the ad campaigns, which are ponied up by the studio, not the production company.

and also bear in mind that the studio execs forecast what they think a movie can make. whatever you may think of 'em, they make their livelihood figuring how much movies can make. to them, all these costs, production and otherwise, are investments. so expectations hit [x], which they hope will hit sales [y] and in some notable cases, those 2 axes never intersect.

seriously: wizards do serve a purpose, for the AOL other "training wheels needed" crowd. it's not unlike the big, friendly instructions most PC sellers bundle into the boxes for new PCs. sure, if you're l337 you don't need it, but let's face it: most people aren't.

M$'s entire philosophy is geared towards the mainstream, non-l337 crowd: that's why windows became so popular in the first place. that they use wizards as prolifically is not, IMHO, inherently problematic.
