  1. Re:I like it on Build Your Own SATA Hard Drive Switch · · Score: 1

Not to mention that putting a switch to disconnect a primary hard drive on the front of a case is just plain stupid.

I fail to see how this promotes longer hard drive life than changing the BIOS settings, let alone using a bootloader. And mounting a non-native filesystem as read/write is something you're very unlikely to do by mistake in ANY operating system in the first place. Any additional "protection" you'd get from this is almost purely imaginary, unless you're trying to protect yourself from random people screwing with your system, in which case I'd be more worried about the HARD DRIVE SWITCH ON THE FRONT OF YOUR CASE.

You mean the same way television killed the film industry, and audio recordings killed the concert industry?

Just because alternatives become available does not, by default, mean the original industry will suffer. But even if it does, there's no practical, economic, or ethical reason to drag down new technologies with the burden of supporting the business model they obsolete.

Saying you've never had a virus without ever scanning your PCs is like saying you've never had an STD without ever getting tested. In both cases, you can have infections without symptoms, and the infections can be transmitted. Yes, there are false negatives, but that's no excuse to abstain from testing.

Granted, you said "never had a problem," not "never had a virus," but what you really meant was that you've never seen a problem. Considering that most malware these days is designed to run unnoticed rather than to cause harm to the desktop, that's not really surprising. There ARE worms that affect Vista, and for all you know, your servers have rootkits on them. Or not. One thing's for sure: it's irresponsible, borderline incompetent to admin a Windows network without any AV, especially a corporate network (i.e., those that probably store private AND valuable information, as opposed to simply private information that's probably on your desktops at home).

You can't shoot someone just for walking on your land. You can't even shoot them if they refuse to leave. They have to present a clear and present danger beyond their mere presence to take any physical action against them. Most you can legally get away with is telling them to leave and calling the cops, but if they leave before the cops get there, it's very unlikely they'll even get a trespassing charge.

You'll get arrested, then the authorities will contact the jurisdiction that issued the warrant to see if they want to pay to ship you there. If yes, you're on a plane; else you're back on the street till the next time you get pulled over. The protections you envision exist largely in your own imagination.
