Since he couldn't get the proper parts in germany at the time, we shipped him supplies to make one. When he was done he brought it to his school (in germany) for a demonstration. They were even allowed to shoot it out the classroom window.

So I guess his classmates spread the word!!

I dont really understand why everyone puts so much importance on the installer.. You use it for maybe 1 hour and then have a working system for years if you want so who cares if the installer is not super nice looking?

I think most ppl just take one look and say "OMG! its not graphical. thats gay." and then they give up saying its too hard..

I wouldn't object to debian getting a nice modern graphical install but its really not important at all.

Exactly. even in windows it can be like that. In IE you can choose to show/hide any of the toolbars. So my parents accidentally hid one of them and then couldn't for the life of them figure out what happened and why they couldn't see their bookmarks anymore. Even with a minimal amount of configurability, regular desktop users can get confused.

I love being able to change every aspect of my desktop but I think there should be a global lockdown feature for Joe User which locks the current config and nothing can be accidentally changed around.

  19. LSB idea type thing on Is RPM Doomed? · · Score: 1

This just occurred to me. What if, instead of requiring a certain file system layout in every distro, why not just require that every distro has a config file or set of environmental variables that point to the locations?

So instead of forcing every distro to put config stuff in /etc or whatever, just get them to make a CONFIG variable that points to whatever folder they want to put the config files into.

This would of course require every software developer to rewrite their stuff to use the variables instead of the path but that wouldn't take all that much effort and it would be a hell of a lot easier than trying to force the distros to make a major change.

Would this idea work? I have only very little experience with linux but it seems like this would be a good solution.
