As for suing anybody who bought a smart card reader, that's bull.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
They're not going after people who bought readers.
So, someone buys from a site that caters to pirates but Joe Q. Public can buy there as well and has a legitimate use for it. So you're saying its ok to extort $3500 from people who use it for a legitimate use, without direct proof that they're using the devices illegally?
You are apparently making up your own set of Economic rules and laws as you go.
I wish! If it were upto me, corporations would be limited to a flat percentage of the number of jobs they could export or out-source to H1Bs. Those getting gubment grants would have that percentage cut in 1/2.
The fact that X increases means that the people that are invested in X, also make more money. There are also the new workers, H1B or not, they too benefit from the increased money made.
Yes, and the number of people who work for Corporation X that can actually afford to invest in their company is decreasing rapidly.
What you, and the corporations & lawmakers apparently fail to realize is that even talk of an increase in tech jobs causes the economy to pick up. I forget who, but a week (two?) ago, some CEO (Cisco??) said that jobs should be picking up soon. This in itself was enough to push the overall stock market up.
Plain and simple: Increase in local tech jobs (and jobs in general) tends to get people to spend money. Low-paying jobs? People only buy the essentials. No jobs? No one buying anything.
I may not be an Economics Major, but I understand that if people have money, people will spend it. If people have more money people spend more.
The fact of the matter is that the US was started because of all immigrants - it seems a bit silly now that we are all here to say "ahh, that was nice - okay, someone shut that door now!"
Why's that? Just because the US was founded by immigrants, whose to say that this isn't itself a 'flawed business model'?
The plain truth is, its detrimental to existing US citizens - and as such, to the US economy - to continue to allow foreigners to come in and take jobs.
Why is it everyone thinks its a racist idea to limit the number of H1B visas into the country and to limit the amount of jobs that are exported?
Is it racist to want to take care of US citizens & our economy? More jobs for US citizens = more $ for said citizens to spend = upturn in economy = more jobs.
The plate covers my friend was telling me about appear 100% transparent to the naked eye. However, when one takes a picture of the plate (presumably at an angle) its blacked out.
... all I can say is have him start talking about his girlfriend whenever possible. Even if he doesn't have one, have him talk around her like he does.
While the woman who was harassing me wasn't my direct supervisor, I did have to work with her on a daily basis. I never bothered pressing charges, despite the fact that she harassed me in front of several of her employees on several occasions. Why not? Too embarassing.
I was 19, she was 41. Had she been hot, it would've been a different story.
suspiciously not posted until after the official announcement by Sega
Hmm. Don't most companies require their beta testers to sign non-disclosure agreements (NDAs)? Ever think that maybe the site didn't come up until after the announcement because of one?
Before clicking the video link, I was thinking I would end up seeing some guy flopping on the ground due to the flicker rate of the video game (anyone know the technical name?) like when the Simpsons went to Japan, saw some bizarre video on TV & went into a goup kiniption fit. Instead, we see what has to be an obvious fake. That, or the guy got ahold of some bad pot prior to tackling his TV tray.
Alas, I can't see the rest of the site now as its throwing up DNS errors from my end.
This thing is supposed to work with broad-band ISPs. I can see TWC buying into this and offering it to existing customers, just like they do with the DVR.
The incentive for the customer would (potentially be) no need to purchase the hardware if TWC is going to supply it and charge a rental (like the DVR and cable boxes), the ease of having the rental costs rolled into their cable bill, and the cable companies having a local game server for the customers to play games on.
Sure, its running DRM-crippled XP, but whats the likelihood that a majority of cable customers will actually care?
It might not be the best business model (relying on TWC/Cox/etc to buy the units & then lease them) but it might actually work.
Of course, I don't know that they're actually going to get TWC/Cox/etc to buy into this, but anything that can increase profits for the cable companies will be seen as a possible must-have for them.
Personally, I signed up for the beta when the last article was posted. We'll see if anyone on/. gets one.. If anyone does, please let us know!
I'm assuming with the pager that people are paid for being on call.
If that were the case, I'd imagine that people would volunteer to be on call, in order to get more $.
More than likely, they're salaried like we all were when I was in IT. It makes better sense to have IT personnel salaried (from a business standpoint) because there may be times that they have to be at the office for an ungodly amount of time.
Case & point: I got to work at 7AM regularly. We were moving our entire datacenter from one building to another. It was a Friday. I left the office Saturday morning at 2AM. That's 19hrs straight on the clock. This wasn't just me, the entire IT staff (5 desktop support, two network engineers, two Unix admins & the IT manager) were all there for at least 18hrs straight. Then we came back in at noon that day to finish.
Can you imagine the overtime or comp time they'd be forced to shell out?
Then there's the conference we did in Vegas (Venitian Hotel, Sands Conf. Center) in 2000... 50+ IT personnell off-site working for a week straight...
When I was in IT (thank the gods I don't do that anymore) we simply rotated between the four of us. One week on, 3 weeks off. Backup was our manager, and his backup was the director. Very rarely did the manager need to get called, and it was even more rare for the director to get called.
If there were scheduling conflicts where one of us would be outside the 2-hour window (2 hours from getting the call to actually starting to work on it) then it was upto the individual on call to find someone to cover for them. If no one's willing or available then you cancel your plans. Period.
No, plans would've been to send the other shuttle up to rescue & then put the damaged shuttle in an orbit that would cause it to break up & have the chunks fall into the ocean.
The report I saw last night on the news interviewed a NASA engineer that begged for spy satellites to take pictures of the shuttle to look for damage. He was ignored.
A buddy of mine pulled that on his mom. Loosened the air filter wingnut to the point that it would rattle. Told her to take it into the shop & ask that they replace the muffler bearing.
Needless to say, she wasn't amused when she got home.

There is no difference between a reasonably flexible smart card reader and a smart card programmer.
Sure there is. One merely reads, while the other allows you to program the card.
Using your logic, one could say that there's no difference between a CD-R drive and a CD-RW drive.
RTFA. Its not a smart card reader but a smart card programmer. Taco munged the title.
I agree 100%.
Unfortunately, the imported Europeans aren't giving back the land.
The US has the ability to ebb the tide of foreign nationals into the US -- the Native Americans didn't have that ability.

Its a cycle thats currently broken.
...Dave Thomas needs to stick to a business he knows: Hamburgers.
No, wait. Wrong Dave Thomas...
Just wait for the boxed set -- there's bound to be one eventually.
Likely, there'll be Revolutions released on DVD, followed by a box set either in time for xmas or within 6 months.
Only problem is, stuff would stick to this.
The plate covers my friend was telling me about appear 100% transparent to the naked eye. However, when one takes a picture of the plate (presumably at an angle) its blacked out.
Already been suggested several times.
Personally, I see this as a Good Idea (tm).
.. a buddy of mine informed me that there are plastic license covers that block the numbers from being seen by the traffic cams.
Anyone know where to get one of these?
...how would the system react (even one with a 'brain') to people who participated in the Ministry of Silly Walks?

I'm sure I'll get modded as Troll, but the only thing Congress understands is its own pockets.
Someone somewhere lined someone else's pocket. This is the only way this got defeated.
I'm not holding my breath.
I see this as a sign that something more nefarious is coming down the pipe.
I'm sorry. Since 9/11 we're not allowed to do any of that.

BUT, in addition to our datacenter move, we did an on-call support rotation, 24x7 per person, every four weeks. One week on, three off.
I'd never get myself into a position where I was the only support guy for 24x365. Not without some SERIOUS incentive!

Well, I guess NASA needs to include prepping TWO shuttles for launch for every time one goes up, to avoid this situation.
Then again, a shuttle design thats not 20+ years old would probably help as well.
He was ignored.
..and I knew as soon as I heard about the shuttle blowing up that it was the foam hitting the wing.
They could've paid me $1M and I could've told them the cause - and saved the country $2.4M.
Haha! Muffler Bearings!
A buddy of mine pulled that on his mom. Loosened the air filter wingnut to the point that it would rattle. Told her to take it into the shop & ask that they replace the muffler bearing.

I was going to make that same comment.
I can't imagine the RFIDs would last long in the microwave. What then? They start questioning people who nuke their clothes to destroy the RFIDs?
