If CDs were sub-$10, I'd surely buy more.

However, having Kazaa Lite has allowed me to download/sample music I wouldn't normally buy without hearing it first. I've recently gotten bit by the Jazz bug. I've never really listened to Jazz, so I have no idea who the good artists are, and who to avoid. Now that I've been downloading some jazz, the likelihood that I'll buy some Jazz CDs when I go to the mall again is higher because of my Kazaa Lite usage.

So, if the RIAA shuts down Kazaa and its clones, they're cutting off people like me. I generally buy only from bands whose works I'm familiar with. Unless someone gives me a CD to listen to, the likelihood of my buying is slim to none. And forget radio - all they play is teenie-bopper shite.

Agreed. The 2nd plane hit the 2nd tower just as I was pulling into my parking lot at my (then) office. I thought it was a total and tasteless joke (considering the juvenile humor the morning show I listed to at the time was known for). When I unlocked the office, I jumped on CNN's webpage. By the time that the rest of the engineers and the admin staff arrived, CNN was almost unreachable. We did get to watc about 15 minutes more of the coverage before we lost connection.

I tried several other news sites (MSNBC, ABCNews, etc) only to find the same congestion.

No, the internet isn't ready to handle the bandwidth associated with millions of people logging on to get the latest information.

Which leads me to a question: Any *decent* (and FREE) newstickers out there that are totally customizable, and run under Windows? I already checked SourceForge.. I've been using Netropa, but its not set up to allow me to add whatever channels I want. I tried Swen (from Tucows) but it doesn't work at all..

BZZZT! WRONG answer. IBM didn't ship copies of Win 3.1 with OS/2. IBM developed two versions of OS/2 - One with Windows *included* in the kernel, the other requiring the USER to supply the copy of Windows. You couldn't install OS/2 with Windows support, and then uninstall OS/2 and keep Windows - it didn't work that way. See, IBM still had access to Win 3.1 source from their deals with MS. When their license ran out, MS released 3.11 in order to break OS/2's hooks. IBM was able to figure out what they did, and released an APAR (its number escapes me) to remidy this.

How do I know? I worked at IBM, supporting OS/2 in their call center. I got there just as OS/2 2.11 was rolling out and left after WARP Server.

Of course, 'fair use' doesn't mean 'share with the world' but what right does the governemnt or the RIAA have to step in and mandate that our A/V hardware won't allow us to make back ups of works we bought the rights to use?

Alternately, we need to be able to FORCE companies that we've signed up for and then requested to opt-out to be held accountable. At one point, I signed up for messages from the NRA. I later decided I didn't want them any more and opted-out. I continued to get junk from them (despite the fact that their server swore my address wasn't in their database) until I threatened to introduce them to the RBL. Amazingly, I got a response from an actual PERSON saying that my address was deleted.

  10. State labor board on Contractor Dilemmas - Moral and Financial Obligations? · · Score: 1

Contact your state's labor board. Not paying you for work you've already done is illegal. I'd also call the state AG's office.

I saw on a movie or TV show once where a programmer put a time-bomb in a program and when the company he contracted for didn't pay him, he let it go off. It was one of those will-go-off-unless-you-pay-me-and-I-enter-a-specia l-key-type things. Not sure if this is even possible, legal, or ethical.

You say milestones were met. I assume that you have something in writing that says what your goals are or were. If push comes to shove, you can always threaten to take your source code and walk. If they were to threaten to sue, call your local TV station's watchdog reporter (I'm sure every market has one) and spill the beans... Might also hint that any potential VCs looking to back their company would surely re-think their decisions.

I'd also look into finding out your state's laws regarding recording conversations. My state, Texas, is a one-side state. Meaning that at least one party must be aware that there is a recording being made. As long as you know, that base is covered. I don't know, however, if its admissable in court. Maybe civil court, but not criminal..

All in all, don't let them screw you over.

While either are tragic, the attacks on the US were more horrifying to more people as this wasn't something that had happened before. Earthquakes have been happening since the dawn of recorded history. No one ever used a fully-loaded airliner as a device of mass-murder before.

The tapes I have are at least 4 hours in length. That's 97280MB, which would take almost 139 700MB discs. This doesn't even take into account the additional 20GB my wife has in her system.
