I think it has been clear for a long time that the GPL license is a problem for a gui framework. The LGPL that used for all of the required Gnome libs is much easier to feel comfortable with for a company that might choose to develop closed source gui apps, eg. like a groupwise connector for evolution.
I'm still very sceptic to these amendments. They require a technical invention to allow software to be patentable.
Software in conjunction with a technical invention is called a device driver. So basically, this amendment still allows device drivers to be patentable.
.. about this is that River Phoenix, which played in the Young Indiana Jones tv series, and which was going to be the next Indiana Jones in the movies, died in 1993. I'm wondering who's going to play him now. Harrison Ford is too old anyway.
> IMHO mplayer is good enough now that it won't lost in/dev/null if i leave.

> Probably not, but will it lose the race against xine?
imho we lose it already. see xine, its popularity started to grow since a
month and keeps growing. while we spend our expensive time by rev.
engineering codecs, optimizing code, writing demuxers, they improve the gui.
then they 'steal' the others and win. we have no chance against xine...
Ah, stability. Yes, in old days mplayer was rock solid while xine crashed at
every second click. It has been changed: mplayer is now everything but
stable (thanks to that many hacks and 10l bugs), while xine improved
stability a lot...
The problem I see with X is not the X protocol per se, but the XFree86 implementation and the development model.
If you wanted or needed to refactor the XFree86 X server, you will find it hard to do. Development is fairly closed in comparison with Linux kernel development. The codebase is rather big, and the X server is a bit harder to build than your average open source project. The codebase is modularized, but the modularization was not put there in order to make it easier to refactor the code.
Maybe it's easy for an experienced developer to work on the code, but I still think that the barriers to entry development on the XFree86 codebase is too high.
Come to think of it, the best way to detect spam messages would be to open tan email account at a public provider, say hotmail, and then see if any mail that comes to your regular email account, also is sent to the fake account.
The email to the fake account can be discarded in any case, so you don't get more junk email this way.
What if an author of GPL copyleft software thinks microsoft is reusing and redistributing GPL his software? Is he then allowed under this law to crack into the computers at microsoft in order to determine if it is rightfully so? Or does the law specifically only allow copyright owner with congressmen in their pocket and tons of money?
Well, maybe something about the record insdustry in general..
But at least we now know that you cannot first offer a service free of charge on the internet, loose millons of dollars, and then try to get it all back by offering a lesser service at a cost.
Napster was a dot-com bomb, even if they had a genuine new concept.
What's the salary like in the ps2 business? Experiences programmer, novice programmer, etc.
It cannot use Ogg Vorbis encoding, can it?

iPod on Windows

I really want an "mp3 player" that looks as good as the IPod, but that uses ogg vorbis encoding. I onlyencode at >320kbps using ogg vorbis for my hd stored music.
For me this device is perfect, since what I really want is the possibility to receive and send email while on the move. I can live with the device not being perfect in every respect; no arm processor, no color screen, low resolution. (And btw, who needs bluetooth when you connect to the network directly?).
But for me the i705 isn't perfect, since I live in Europe (Germany to be exact), and I need a GPRS capable device, not some US specific pager like network. When will they release such a device?
(Don't point me to the Treo, I don't want another phone..)

Testing the Audigy

Can the audigy playback cd audio at 44.1kHz, _without_ resampling it internally to 48kHz, as the live does?
Can it sample analog audio from the aux / cd connector (for pctv cards) and mix / playback in real time? I really want to ditch the analog connector to my receiver. The live card can do this.
This is the Game of the Year in my book. It's only in preview yet, but I am hooked and play several hour allmost every day!
There's one thing missing though; it should be easy for server administrators to set up TeamKiller kicking. Since votekicking didn't work in test1 on linux (didn't try test2 yet), its impossible to get rid of them.
Otherwise; to those that think this is only quake3 with mods; play it, and you'll discover that this is a game with tactics that involve teamwork and skills beyond being able to quickly change from the rocketgun to the railgun, to be able to do rocketjumps and aim perfectly with the railgun etc. This look, feels and sounds like war, and your adrenaline goes up high when the heat turns up.
This might possible be a way for palm to separate out its software palmos side into a separate company without paying a lot of tax, which they would otherwise have done if they had to split palm inc into two companies.
-where can I buy a boxed set of it? I prefer the convenience of pressed CDs..

In a related note, S3 graphics has released open source drivers for the S3 Savage graphics family. See eg. here.

I think those who are trying to automate the steering of cars should try this. Just drive on and when you hit something, you turn.
- it will be very handy to just grab the telly, turn it off and place it behind the door..

Anything that would make it legal to edit away Jar-Jar would be welcome... Or?

The internet grass movement is called the open source movement. We're bigger than corporations and we're bigger than governments.

I think the neatness and power of java (when not used to create applets) is the standard class library.
It will be interesting to see what develops of this language and hopefully standard (cross platform?) class library.

We really need the http://webmuseum. Now! not .com., .now.!
"[...]for next generation platforms including the Xbox, PS2 and Gamecube."
I'm wondering, did the submitter omit both the windows platform and linux platform, or was the omission rooted in the article quoted itself?
I certainly believe that both the windows and linux platform are part of the future generation platforms for gaming.
We see prices from distributors now below $500 for 15.1" 1024x768 displays here in norway now, so prices are going down. 17" are below $1000 as well.
