    Same here, I'll pay more than ten bucks a month here in America for Dr. Who, Top Gear, Ground Force, and all the old American TV series shows, but I wouldn't want to crap on a plate and give it to Redbox unless they gave me money to watch the current hollywood movies.

    This isn't competition, it's another "OMG PIRATES" feint for when this business venture hits the atmosphere and turns into a flaming ball of idiocy.

    If some nitwit is going to invest 3 grand and take time to write code just to brick a cheap gps i'll be happy to help crowdsource some funds for my local police to equip some popo vehicles with cheap and basic spectrum checkers.

    At the very least some of the big rigs that cranking out some serious wattage will get fined as well as finding the nitwit driving around with the gps bricker.

    The point here is that the original article is just causing fud.

    Younger people need to put in the extra time till they learn how to do it right.

    I tell everyone I mentor - I want to walk in, press one mouse click on a button, go get my coffee and have your eight hour day done before I get back.

    The problem is the PHB folks that don't get that you can actually get things done if you don't put in an 80 hour week.

    Yeah - about that. Yesterday I sat down to help a under thirty developer with a sql query he'd worked on for an entire day and couldn't get to work.

    Took me twenty minutes - but then again that's why I have a good job, and am over 40.

    I had mod points so I stepped in to see if there were any corporate shills I could mod down, but as it should be SyFy is still a laughingstock and generally regarded as one of the dumbest channels on pay tv.

    It's also the channel that got me to cut the cord.

    Piss off and die SyFy. the nitwits that went for reality TV and wrestling to make more cash should be put up against a wall, shot, Duct Taped back on the wall, shot again and finally be staked in effigy to warn off others from being total douche-bags and emulating the way you destroyed a perfectly good SCI-FI channel.

    If that isn't clear enough - SyFy Sucks!

    The advertisers know if they keep up the flashy stuff it becomes the norm.

    You know that bug they put on television? You know, that thing in the corner identifying the station - years ago I was with a bunch of people that complained about it - but it never went away, I finally gave up watching broadcast, satellite amd OTA TV.

    Now people not only don't care about that bug, but also don't give a crap while all the adverts are blasting across the bottom of the screen when you are watching the show.

    So that leaves us trying to work around a system that's not going away because too many stupid people can't be motivated to pick up pitchforks and storm the castle.

    . About the time they realize how bad off they are it'll be too late and the rest of us can finally move forward without the half of Congress that always stonewalls efforts to fix the mess. It's a win win because they get to live in a world of fear and hate and teach their kids about Jesus riding dinosaurs while the rest of us get the economy back on track and fix the pollution problem and finally get energy independent.

    I hope you live in Illinois. They now have a veto proof democrat majority. All of the hopes and dreams you have listed will be tested in reality in Illinois over the next few years.

    I hope to revisit this point with you in the future.

    I have for well over a decade worked at maintaining legacy code, but I always relished finding the absolute crap applications and redoing them from scratch.

    So I am kind of puzzled about the question. What kind of coder avoids jumping in and making something fresh and new and challenging his or her skills to not only replace something craptastic, but make something that his or her co-workers look at and go "Wow"?

    There are a lot of businesses out there that would love to have talented old school developers. I was shocked at how grateful they are for me since I left corporate and now work in a business that has 10 employees, but I code in my comfort zone, make more than I did in corporate, and get awesome feedback.

    And I'm closer to 50 than 40. If you can't learn on the go (like I gladly do) then use your experience to mentor younger coders , provide great plans for coding projects, and enjoy less stress in your life.

    Can I play the game if the company that is putting up street lights and drills thru my internet connection and takes me off the web for a week when I am at home? If not, then yes, they are evil.

    And yes, three blocks over a company did exactly that. I was off the web unless I went to a cafe or was at work. If a company cannot be bothered to let a person play a single player game without being connected to the web, then they do not deserve my money.

    And I own d1, d2, sc1, and all the warcrafts that didn't require a server.

    I drop my phone all the time. I throw it at walls. I dunk it in a glass of water and make bluetooth calls on it.

    You should see the looks I get when I wash the phone in the sink.

    Course, it's a motorola quantico, much better for my use than a smart phone. I've had a phone fly out of my shirt pocket when riding 55 mph on my motorcycle.

    USB charging, and can be left in water for half an hour with no ill effects.

    A coworker brought in a kindle fire for me to help load a book. I thought to myself that I could probably use one of these.

    But ads? Nope. Not going to buy one. Ads are to pay for delivery, ads are not to be forced on me when i've bought something. I cut the cord to cable and satellite, and I censor the heck out of the web with add ons.

    They lost a sale. Not going to even bother looking up specs to buy the right one now.

    Well for a commute saving four minutes one way equals 8 minutes a day times 5 days for a workweek so that's 40 minutes a week.

    Having two weeks for vacations and excluding holidays that nets you 2000 minutes a year - Which means you save 30 hours or so a year...
