On the same note, Urinals and toilets have been added to the list of dangerous tools as nearly every person in the world spends 5 minutes on them a day, multiplied by yay billion! Can you imagine the lives gone to waste? (pun intended)
This is also not a matter of being jailed for. Perhaps the ebst solution is government action prohibiting the mailing of spam. Dont get on a high horse and expect anyone that does anyhting you dont like to be jailed for it.
Its probably a little too early to start testing the cars for user safety. After all, its not even determined if this is a viable source of transportation. Right now, the cars are prototypes, and cost a fortune to develop. When and if they become mainstream, then they will be subject to the same rigorous testing that vehicles now are.
You seem to misunderstand the point of the game. Think about how many army commercials you have seen. The army is starting to get smart as to what my generation is looking for in the military. They are playing music we listen to in the commercials. They are creating products directly to us. As a marketing strategy, this is briiliant. Th best way to get people interested in your company/product is to cater to the subscriber/consumer
MMORPG stands for Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. The gist of it is that a large server runs a game world, in which many players can connect and interact with each others and their environment with a role playing setting. Some prime examples are Everquest, Dark Age of Camelot, and the upcoming Star Wars Galaxies.
Im not particularly suprised, altho the parallel definitely exists. While Harry potter was catering to a much more central audience (I.E the people who read the books), Spiderman is something that everyone can identify with. Im pretty sure we've all seen the comics, the cartoons, the video games. There is just a lot more Spidey propaganda. Now, what I want to see is in 2 weeks, how much Episode 2 crushes the market...
While taking circuits 2, my professor was an older electrical engineer who worked for GE in its earlier days. He described the countless black box items that passed by him each day. Each time, the case was the same. "This box will boost power nearly 20 times! You just cant disassemble it" So they would poke the box, and prod it, and test the information on it. Each time, it usually turned out to be something simple like a DC source hooked up to a simple OP-amp that would boost any signals that ir recieved X times. A clever little hoax, but it learns a lesson. Any good engineer should only trust what he can take apart and put back together wil similar results.
The metaphor against driving falls through on a few notes. The car, after all, is blizzards, and wouldnt you want to prevent someone from using your car if they are going to lend it out to their friends, and people that THEY DONT KNOW. Despite the few good users that merely use Bnetd to alleviate the tension on the Battle.net servers, Most clientele are using it for piracy, as they do not have Cd-keys. If Blizzard could develop a means of checking the Bnetd Users CD-keys against its own databases, then Bnetd Would be more than welcome to produce again.

Part of human nature is to associate with what is closest to us. Think religion, beliefs, ideals. Why shouldnt this be applied to our development of machines. After all, what are machines and robots but the next stage of human interaction? In some respects, this is almost our playing god, creating man(robots) in our image. We are most comfortable with what we percieve to be like us. I guess on a lighter note think of the last time you were physically attracted to a chimpanzee. Organically similar, but not human. Creating humanoid robots is our way of asserting our power over our environment.
Errr... even with the wonders today of flourescent lighting and even sometimes, get this windows (the non digital kind) I STILL spend most of my time in dimly lit rooms working... Hows that for progress?
I can see where you are coming from. Like you, i used to browse the Qbasic forums looking at projects, questions, games, etc. i even began some of my own, though not necessarily on the scale of a MMORPG. I too, was one of those people that would eve,::gasp:: ask a question once in a while. However, to say that all these ideas suck is VERY negative.
I think that the ground level for many people is programming low level games using graphics. That certainly was my starting ground. Now, many of these people will lose interest or pop out crappy little 8 bit games akin to nintendo of yore. However, there are those people that DO actually turn out good programs that become our Sid Meiers. (Civ 1-3 anybody?)
I think instead it is better merely to encourage these baby steps and provide help (and a reality check) once in a while. Who knows, that same person that created the umteenmillionth tetris clone might be the one to turn out the next smash hit...
Hmmm... I woulda thought that CowboyNeal was the only one for you... He's going to be heartbroken, but maybe we'll see an increase in his populatiry on the polls...
True, and this is also why Linux will commonly have less problems. Any idiot on the street has heard of Windows and can easily set up a windows system. However, the more skilled admins can and do set up Linux OS's. Therefore, windows absorbs most of the moron factor. It doesnt necessarily mean that Linux is more secure, but in fact that the poll is skewed because the average user without any tech-geek connections does not know how to protect his system.
Its amazing how sometimes things just to you from/. as though they were signs. The past few weeks have been hellish for me, after finally getting Baldurs Gate II and Wizardry 8. I havent seen my circuits class in weeks, my assembly language class is non-existent, and lets not even think about physics. After recieving many poor grades, and continued telling myself "just one more fight, one more battle", now I think Ive finally seen what to do. Both Discs lie in shambles now in my garbage can. Thanks once again slashdot for reminding me of Stuff That Matters.
