    As someone who worked for a pizza Delivery resturante back in school I can say that we NEVER tried to verify a telephone number with a phone book.All you do is ask for a call back number incase you get lost^H^H^H^H^H a poorly written address.

    XEvil was the first game I played in linux. Thanks for remininding me about it.

    I liked the games website and the hate mail that they "got". Not sure if it was real or not but it was back when the net was "small and young" so it woudln't suprise me if a lot of people did find it offensive. All the bios for the characters were great esp the nerd, who was my favorite character, who got killed by his robot.

    All in all good times.

    Maybe your underestimating your mother. I told my mother to consider using mozillia last week and within 20 minuets she called me back saying she got it. She's not a developer like me, she uses her compuetr for office work, all I had to tell her was to go to Mozilla.org.

    I think we need to get over this fear/belief that we /. readers are 1337 and all other people, like our moms, are poor sheep given to the wolves.
    Why don't you try telling your mom that their is a different browser out there, give her the URL for Mozilla or what have you.

    Maybe you'll find that your mother isn't some backwards internet user but she is actually capable of fending for herself.

    You didn't miss anything, basically this guy just told everybody how foolish he was. If I am getting heat sink/fan for my cpu and it's not an exact copy/replacement I would definitely check to see if it fits. This man doesn't, in fact he doesn't check three times. To further things he gets impatient and either shorts out his board with static electricity or the piece that he refers to as a doohickey was more important that he realized when he knocked it off.
    I have the same board he has, sorry strike that, had and I gone through two fans because of temp getting to high but I allow the BIOS to turn of the PC if things get to hot. Linux can get might pissed off about a hard shutdown but it's better than having to get a new CPU.
    All in all a really dumb story...
    I would like to see a picture of said doohickey to see what it was he broke.

    Obviously, as I'm sure you probably have a different bank from the AC that you disagreed with No it's not when he said it was FUD.

    It is also possible but not probable that the AC and I have the same bank.

    Now I just need an example of something that is probable but not possible...

    Before I got moved to development I was a Security Admin for a fortune 500 company, but they still would let me bill for business expenses, like cell phone calls and they provided me with a pager. So I don't think it's a question of working for a privately held company vs. a publicly traded one as some posters said it was.

    I think this is a personal dilemma. Here are some points you should consider.

    What % of the broadband usage is for business and what % is personal.

    How important is this to you, by that I mean are you willing to leave the job over it?

    At my job I wouldn't be afraid to tell my manger that an issue might get me to look for a new job if it wasn't changed or a reasonable explanation wasn't given, I wouldn't worry about him letting me go for something trivial. You might not have the relationship with your manager if you don't I would get a job lined up then talk.

    Point of fact: it's really easy to open an envolope with no visable disturbance. My sister did this as a goof. My Uncle always sent us as kids a card with a fifty dollar check. We new it and counted on it, we were money grubbers. Anyway one year my sister intercepted my leter and using a technique that if you dont know about I wont tell you was bale to open the envolope remove the check and reseal it with me not even knowing it. Don't think that your snail mail is secure because sometimes you can't tell.

    Did it bother me, no I thought it was funny, tought me a lesson, not to expect gifts.

    No, it's an insight into the behaviour of people in general. Who actually buys "good enough"? If you do, you find in about 3 years time that it isn't. It was only good enough for then, but eveything else moved on.

    It's also likely that if your always trying to be on the cutitng edge then you ned up buying something that doesn't catch on or become the defacto standard in which case you are equally screwed.

    Why don't you jsut record i to the harddrive, the article doesn't give details but I thought writing to the HD was quicker than burning a disk or is that and buffer underuns not an issue anymore? I don;'t know I could be wrong, I've been out of the loop for a while.

    Hmmmm I would tend to think this one differntly, if distributing is illegal and you use a program that you know distrubutes I don't think you'd get much protection from the law. Just because you can't run it off doesn't make it okay....

    This is ri God Damned diculous

    This has got to be a sign that it is time for major changes at the USPTO. I could almost understand non-tech people screwing up tech patents and given patents for something clearly not innovative but this is too much.

    Screw it I'm going to get a patent for my messy room and anybody who has a messy room will have to pay me.

    I think that if I hear many more stories coming out of the USPTO like this one my head will explode.

    My friend is throwing a party tomorrow and some of his guests work at the USPTO, I think I will shake each and everyone one of them and ask the what the hell is going on. It's almost like it's a joke, they probably sit around in a conference room and see what the most ridiculous application they got that day and put it right on through.

    I can't take this anymore.

    I would say don't become (to)dependent on a free service you have no control over.

    Make backup copies, if the information is that important to you make sure you can recover it if, they delete you account, they suffer a catastrophe, some one hacks you account, etc.

    If they had this all the way from Va to Fl, it would take me days to make it home, although everytime I get angry because X cut me off or Y was tailgating me I could pull over, play some CS and release all my anger.

    Even if they had to use a free service they could have gotten a 1and1 account when they were giving away free space, at least it wouldn't have a big crappy banner saying "Look at us we are unprofessional". I'd be leery about doing business with a company that that had a free email address etc. It just screams "Scam", "here today gone tomorrow", it might be a harsh judgment but it's just they way I and I imagine others are.

    Even if they paid for the domain email and hosting space I think they could have done it for less than 10,000 to 15,000 USD. You could even forgo the email and just have a phone number for a contact if you were that hard up.

    Like others have said, I also don't trust anything with the name extreme or any variation in the title.
