  1. Re:Looks neat, but on SymphonyOS Alpha 4 Released · · Score: 1

Thank you for the link. That is about as basic as it gets, aside from the apt/emerge/pacman I mentioned earlier. I'm surprised they don't offer the units as a download from their site.

Now to bed, tomorrow I will definitely be trying it out.

  2. Re:Looks neat, but on SymphonyOS Alpha 4 Released · · Score: 1

Did a search for "gentoo" and didn't find the information.

I've been wanting to try out symphonyos for awhile, but the disk doesn't boot on my system. I think it's something with my sata drives. I just don't care enough to figure it out. Also the os part of symphonyOS just bugs me. If it's a desktop call it a desktop.

I'm just waiting to be able to apt-get (emerge, pacman, whatever) mezzo (symphony, orchestra, whatever the hell), edit some rc for my preferences and boot it up. Kind of like I do for XFCE.

I can wait though. I guess that I will have to. I really think my girlfriend would like this...

  4. Re:Best Windows Automation Tool? AutoIt? on Automation in the Workplace? · · Score: 1

I wrote some significant AutoIt scripts at my last job to basically put band-aids on the crap RetailPro upgrade they did. It is really a very nice language and I still go to it occasionally for my current work. Fortunately, I do not have to use Windose very often now. And even though the fuckers keep leaving messages asking me to come in and update some of the scripts, I never call back. I would like to find something like that for Linux. I can get most of what I need using bash and zenity, but it really would be nice to find something that can send keystrokes to windows under Linux.

  5. Re:World's smallest violin on Sarbanes-Oxley - How is it Affecting You? · · Score: 1

The correct answer was for _ALL_ companies trading in the US to publish complete annual accounts down to the transaction level. This would be easier for the company, would provide all the detail any investigator needed.

Well, I doubt that would fix it. If people are going to lie about paperwork, they'll lie about that paperwork as well. It may make it a little harder.

No siree. The correct answer is to pass a law saying if you knowingly screw people out of their retirements you die. Painfully. And the people you love and anyone 2 or less steps down the corporate heirarchy.

Seriously. Enough pussy footing around it, that would make a difference. Oh yeah, this is the United States of America. People will always end up getting screwed. Never mind.

This entire thread is just anecdotal, but I find in myself the exact opposite reaction. When I dress up I find myself feeling like a self-effacing asshole. Yet when I dress how I want, I have no such insecurities, regardless of the social situation.

    I just don't like being a phony I guess.

Not buying this. Seems like if the difference grew larger the winds would grow stronger, and balance would be maintained. Just at a little different level.

  10. Re:So tell us... on Learning PHP 5 · · Score: 1

Well, just speaking for myself, after throwing together a little mysql/php scheduling calendar for the local elementary school (my fiance is a teacher there) to learn the language, I bought The PHP Anthology.

If someone where to ask me about learning PHP, I'd tell them to scratch an itch, using php.net, then buy The PHP Anthology from sitepoint. Great stuff. I think it has been reviewed here before but I'm too lazy to look. Anyway, you can download a couple of sample chapters to see if you're interested.

IMHO, it's best to look at a language, see what you can do with it, then hopefully before you've developed some shitty habits with the language take a look at how it should be done.

  11. Re:cool on GNOME 2.8 Released · · Score: 1

Perhaps off topic, but I honestly (and I've asked this before here) don't understand what a "desktop environment" means. I try KDE every once in awhile. As I try Gnome every once in awhile. Then I always go back to something simpler, use apps from both camps and keymap shortcuts. I do have a slowish box, but I honestly don't get what is gained by a "full-blown desktop environment". I dont' even know what it means.

This is not a troll. I don't care what people use. I am honestly interested because it seems like I'm missing something in these arguements/discussions about desktop environments.

Kind of like John Wayne Airport, seeing how he really didn't want the airport to be there. Sorry for the tangent.

  17. A Shame on How Important is Research Funding? · · Score: 3, Insightful

Much good has come from gov't funded pure research. Much good could still come from it. Too bad Bush has his head up his ass. I do agree with one of the previous posts that having gov't funded research go into the pockets of private companies is crap.

I don't see any companies funding much research that is going to benifit society at large instead of their pocketbooks. And they shouldn't. That is part of what gov't is for. There are too many people who profess a belief in capitalism and have had no contact with Adam Smith.

We're still stuck with the crap DOS version. It is the final version, we are planning on upgrading to the windows version in Jan. The rounding problem still makes our accountants do flips. Polling goes either from the remote to the main, or over TCP/IP. Still get errors in processing the polled files.

It seems to me that it would be pretty basic to put a frontend on an SQL query that would let anyone pull up the reports that we do now. Shit, how complicated is a retail system?

As far as the language of choice, I don't know. I had a little interaction with RTI years ago, but they weren't able to do what I wanted.

If you know of something comparable, kick down. I've seen a couple, but they seemed so similiar I couldn't justify the costs of moving all our data over. I'd love to get rid of RPro.

  20. Tough find on Restaurant POS Systems? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I work for a small sized retail chain (16 stores). We use RetailPro which is just a piece of shit. Every 6-8 months I look for alternatives. Linux would of course be ideal. But for this size, there just aren't a lot of options, regardless of OS. Bigger chains have the resources to roll their own. You may want to look into that. As someone mentioned, front ends are pretty much the same, it's the back office, and transaction polling that you have to look at. I think that it would be fairly trivial to write up a couple scripts and/or rsync to maintain customer data across stores, and whatever other data you would need. I have neither the skill not the time (mostly not the time) to do it myself.

I'm prone to paranoia, so take this with a grain of salt. I've been worrying me more and more how in the pockets of US corporations the gov't is. When India is willing to make such a strong statement regarding Freedom, and given that they have such a high percentage of engineers and coders, it almost makes me embarrased.

I would like to see true progress, but with Dubya's oil company presidency and the rest of our elected officials spending 80% of their time raising money and, no surprise, putting out laws that help those companies in the lead stay in the lead, I worry. It shouldn't take running out of oil to develop different technology. It shouldn't take a genius to understand having the government use and pay for development that help society at large (GPL'd software) is a good thing.
