The news rules do make sense, a in-flight fire on an airliner is pretty serious, especially if there is no nearby place to land (e.g. halfway between California and Hawaii).

I dont think US automakers like Tesla Motors or Phoenix Motorcars will cry much about this. They are aiming for complete zero emissions vehicles anyway.
Look, the crying from automakers is silly, like the DaimlerChrysler announcement that "we cant make it". Well, tough luck. Innovate or die. Its a market and competition, you dont have any birthright to sit there and dictate things.

I am a big fan of Market based solutions. However, CAFE standards are not the market. They're additional government interference with the market. Of course, I would also be perfectly content to let drag-asses like Chrysler die. (no longer owned by Daimler, incidentally) I wouldn't be bailing them out or protecting them with tariffs or subsidies if I were King. The marketplace should be a knife fight. Unfortunately, it may turn out that people, in general, prefer $40,000 SUVs to $60,000 experimental electric cars.

The technology is so laden with anti-customer "features" that, frankly, I hope the both lose. I think this is a realistic possibility as downloadable HD content becomes commonly available, which you hit on later in your post.

Is it reasonable? I don't know how much AU$500 is worth. You'll have to put it in more generic terms. For example, US$500 might be 2 hookers and an ounce of blow, but AU$500 might be worth 5 hookers and 3 ounces of blow.

Frankly, if you manage to get more than a couple dozen users, the downside of using my generic currency terms become obvious. I had a mildly successful shareware business back in the early '90's and I've still got 12 hookers locked up in the basement.

    Yes. Absolutely.

Congress is supposed to be a deliberative and thoughtful lawmaking body. Unfortunately, they're neither thoughtful nor deliberative. There's no time for it when there is so much influence peddling and power brokering to be done. Riders and unrelated amendments to bills are a preferred way for Congressmen to obfuscate their self-serving actions from the voting public.

An excellent recent example of Bad Law being tacked onto Popular Law is how Online Gambling effectively became a federal crime when it was stuck into a Port Security bill.

Fortunately, there are organizations like Downsize DC and the ACLU that call attention to the worst of these abuses.

dude, it's easy to be philosophical when you OWN A FUCKING PORSCHE

Man, that's a bit harsh. Sure, a new loaded 911 Turbo rates pretty high on the gadget scale but there are a lot of Porsches out there that aren't excessive and are simply cars that people love. For all we know, Mr. AC, he could be driving a 35 year old 914, worth maybe $5000 in decent condition. (Now, more in tune with this subject) I love my early 911 (1971) in part because it is so free of gadgets. It doesn't have a CD player, GPS, park assist, a fucking thermometer in the instrument cluster, power seats or any of that stuff that distracts from driving. If I wanted to sell the car today I could probably get about $8000 for it, but I wouldn't sell it because it isn't some disposable gadget like an iPod or last year's cell phone. It is a hobby, a piece of automotive history, and it reminds me of a simpler time when I'm around it. Just because a guy owns a Porsche doesn't mean he's some rich asshole that needs some perspective. Some of my best customers came to this country and started with nothing. Now they're buying Porsches because they like the cars and to reward themselves for their hard work and a job well done.

So, I try to do both. I support the Libertarian Party and Downsize DC.
In many ways, Downsize DC has the potential to be more influential than the Libertarian Party in the near future. Downsize DC attempts to focus on "transpartisan" issues. We want to draw members from Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, and Independents. Virtually everyone agrees that the federal government is too big and too intrusive. Most people can agree that federal programs like REAL ID need to be repealed. It is an issue that crosses party lines. Downsize DC's flagship legislation is the "Read The Bills Act" is designed to remove the lack of accountability that our legislators abuse by passing volumes and volumes of laws that we are expected to know and follow but they don't even bother to read.

(Now, back on topic) I'm still thinking about Solar, but I'm concerned about durability in this area of Oklahoma. According to my home insurance guy on average you'll have serious roof damage from the weather every six years around here. I'm also considering wind turbines. A 10kW tower would whoop ass. However, as I've been doing the math, the bang/buck seems to favor increasing efficiency before investing in alternative energy sources. We replaced all of your windows this past month and can tell a big difference in the comfort level of the house already. In the spring we're updating the air conditioning to be more efficient, and then insulating the attic better. After all that is done, all of the math for the solar or wind power will be done again.
