"It takes a parent to raise a child, not a village."
I agree and disagree on this. In todays modern world it only takes a parent or parents to raise a child. This does not apply to tribal cultures. Especially ones where the men typically being the hunters may leave for a few days to weeks at a time to collect food. This of course requires the village to compensate. They have to help each other with daily duties, as child care. I believe, and this is strictly my opinion on the matter, that if you live in a village it does take a village to raise a child. For most all of society today we no longer live in villages so we have to do the raising ourselves.
It is extremely anti-competitive to lock in software on specific hardware. I understand Intel is fighting for market share but bully tactics on consumers don't work too well. Then again MS does it all the time and people do allow them too. If you want examples go buy Age of Emnpires III and try to run it on Windows 2000.
Ok in pictures I can see it beeing easily applied as it is now. Music however seems alot more difficult to keep a "watermark" applied. If it is only rasing the volume on one tiny piece couldn't I just convert my mp3 to some other format and turn on volume normalize? It seems so easy to bypass its not worth applying.
If they do passs this piece of legislation. All these companies will just move servers outside of china with the same restrictions inplace. That way chinese get google and the chinese gov is happy cause it is censored. congress need to stop nickle and dime trade sanctions and step up to the plate if trade sanctions is what they are going to do.
My first PC that I actually owned was a Tandy 100, could have been 100 it was ages ago. Although my grandfather had a commodore 64 that I loved. I was lucky my grandfather was a computer programmer from the first PCs that used punch cards and continued that work until he retired for the second time a few years ago. I was in geek heaven with all the disgarded hardware I got from him.
All this is based on our current understanding physics and as any intelligent person knows that all our understanding physics doesn't amount to a hill of beans. The laws of physics as we know them is not all there is to know on the subject. So the article is right, with our current understanding we can not travel in time. However in the future we will have more understanding and we might find that we can travel in time. So what is the point of talking about something that doesn't matter? Oh wait I forgot I was on/. that's about all anyone talks about.
Hi I'm freaking annoying would everyone just drop this joke already. oh wait i just helped continue it. so after i shoot myself for posting yet another "hi i'm blah blah blah" would someone please go shoot all those that cam before me. except for the first one i say orginals are safe, but i guess it is up to the shooter if they live. although they might deserve death since they did start the whole sorted affair.
your car is not who you are. it doesn't matter what it looks like it only takes you from point A to point B anything else is superficial. one other thing, stop complaining about gas prices if you are unwilling to give up a car that guzzles the stuff like water.
With newer cars when you lose electronics you are dead in the water as everyone has said. Hell have you ever had a power steering pump go out on a brand new car? Obviously not because you can hardly turn the wheel at all forget about any kind of real navigation. Brakes are just as bad, there is so much controlled by the chips that they do next to nothing without power. I didn't even touch on the fly br wire systems that are completely dependent on electricity.
I am shocked and apalled that a corporation like Google would attempt to make money. I mean they did say their motto was not to be evil but if they try to make money they obvioulsy lied. We all know anyone that tries to make a buck is evil. Look at the catholic church they make tons and ask for it regularly, they must be the pinnacle of evil. I mean if everyone tried to make money what kind of world would we live in? So sad that Google is evil after all.
I really don't think obeying the laws of the counrty you do business in is a bad thing. Yes if the regime is oppresive you are going to have to limit services or products but we live in a global community and we have to play ball. Yes google, yahoo and msn could have told all of china too bad, but I belive that would be a huge dis-service to the people. Would you rather have limited web access or none at all? If change is going to happen in China it will happen from with in not because an American corporation refuses to filter it's internet sites. These companies are evil for allowing China to control its people, but the people allow themselves to be controlled. If everyone in that country stood up at once and said this is it. We are tired of oppresion and we are taking our country back, they could do it. They have more people than thier military could possible control. Yes many would die but how many died in the French and American Revolutions? Its the cost of freedom. If the chines people want unfiltered sites and be able to say what they like they should fight for it themselves. I'm not saying those that want to help shouldn't help them, but an individual corporation should not be held reliable for the laws of the land it operates in.
I understand that the average mode of communication has changed from my generation and the last,(I'm 26). We still do know what telegrams and snail mail is like. When I got my first PC I didn't know but 3 other people that had one and only one of them was online. I still had to snail mail to everyone. I have even used a telegram, I have friends overseas and a telegram was a neat way to get in touch and was faster than snail mail. Just because you are in your twenties doesn't mean you don't what STOP means at the end of a sentence or have not mailed something with the post office. Just my 2 bits.
"I have thought that, perhaps, the defending lawyer should try just as hard to get at the truth as the prosecutor, but still be an advocate for the defandant. This is possible, you know."
This is not possible for a defense attorney. They are hired to get people off, bottom line. In an ideal world maybe this would not be the case but in an ideal world we would not have lawyers becuase people would always be honest and nice to each other. In my opinion a good defense attorney has got to be a real slime-ball. Somebody who is willing to blatantly lie and skew the facts so far out of proportion they don't mean the same thing. If I where to kill somebody and I wanted to get off, I would not hire somebody looking for the truth because in cases like this the truth will not set you free but get 10 to life in the state pen. I would like the world to be a better place but its not. Since it isn't my lawyers is a sleaze and that is why he is my lawyer. If something comes up I know he will do what it takes to turn things my way no matter what.
How many times are people going ask what is SeaMonkey or is it the same as FireFox? If you don't know then go google it for god's sake! The other half of this question is why do people keep answering? If someone is not intelligent enough to read the previous 50 posts that answer this question they shouldn't be on/. Now back to the topic, please excuse my rant. I love that this going to continue being worked on. I like it more than firefox especially the debugging tools. If you are a developr this is a great suite and worth the time checking out!
This could really change how you pick a mate if you plan on reproducing that is. I guess if we slashdotters want kids that aren't "off" we should start dating bumb women instead of geek girls. What on earth will the geek girls do for dates now? They already had hard enough with geek guys being completely inept at dating. If geek guys do start looking for dumb women to reproduce, where does that leave all the geek girls? They should have taken into consideration all the geeks out there who's lives this will change forever or at least until the next/. article posts.
I remember sitting in the library at my school since we did have a satellite I got to see it live. When it first went I thought cool explosion but when I looked around the room and saw the teachers were very upset I kinda freaked out a little. I just kept thinking it was so horrible all those people died and that I would never get to go into space. I don't know why I thouhgt I wouldn't get to be astronasut because of this accident but I was very young and I guess a little self centered(maybe alot but hey I was a kid). Still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up thinking about it.
What all this comes down to is culture. We are all arguing over something that changes from country to country, even from person to person. Some people believe evreyone should have a job they love. Some believe the job is only an ends to the means, to do what you love outside of work. Some people think you should just be happy with what you got and thank the god, gods, or themselves.(whatever you believe in). So when it comes down to it everyone here is correct. You should do what works for you. We are all different, so we will find different ways to cope with the world around us. Instead of badgering each other on who is right and who is wrong maybe we should just respect each other for finding a way that works for them. Now my opinion on the matter, not that anyone cares what that is. I think your job doesn't matter. You can have as much money as you like and the greatest job in the world but still be absolutely miserable. Being happy or sad comes from much deeper within, not just your job. We need to teach our children how to be happy despite doing tedious work. We should teach them how to find joy, love and beauty in their everyday lives not just summer vacation. We should show them that you can be happy no matter what conditions you live in or boring job you have to do. If we really want to prepare the next generation this is what we need to teach them. If they know how to be happy their job will be of no consequence even if they grow up to be a garbage collector.
" OMG~~!! LOL! I love it when the Slashfags bash MS for no reason... it's teh funniest EVAR!!!! LOLOLOL!!" Since you post here as well you are a member of this community. So by your own logic would that make you a slashfag? Also who here specifically said anything bad about Microsoft? Alot of stuff about IE but I didn't see the big M word until you posted. I would normally stop here as I try not to create flamebait but in this case I am going to continue. Obviously this person does not have the common sense the gods gave to a naked mole rat. If you haven't noticed this is a very pro alternative community,(settle down MS fan boys I didn't say completely alternative and yes I do like windows so bite me)therefor we are going to talk bad about the big guys on the block. So now that you know this you should take your happy ass some where else and keep your dumb ass comments to yourself, ID10T. I've had a bad day, can you tell?
I too can't wait for the Optimus although it's still vaporware if it ever comes out I will be first in line. This is definately the way to go not some custom hardware you have to change everytime you exit or enter a game. i agree with alot of other people here that this thing is a step backward and hotkeys and keymapping are much easier. On the ridiculous or genius vote, this is definately ridculous.
OK you like meetings becuase you learn more about your product but couldn't you get even more information by simply researching and shooting a few e-mails to people. That way you don't clog everyone elses day by asking the same questions that has been answered by these people 200 times already. Now I have to go to a meeting with our sales guys about something I have already explained twice just this morning. No, I'm not being sarcastic that is exactly where I'm headed. So to all the sales guys out there that love meetings, bug off I have real work to do.
You definately had a bad DM. I game semi regular with some people and nobody takes it serious. Besides if there are rules you don't like just don't follow them as long as your DM agrees anyway. I like the 3.5 system it's robust and you can easliy tweak it to your liking.
"Spielberg is a sellout but not as much as Lucas."
The term sell out amazes me to this day especially when applied to music and movies. In case you didn't know the very reason that about 99% of people that get involved in the movie biz is becuase they want to get rich and famous and you can't get rich and famous by making indies films. I only said indie because on average these people are considered to be "true to their art" and not sell outs. Now to get rich and famous you MUST make movies for the masses. Do you really think that Lucas made any of the Star Wars films strictly for fun or the art of storytelling and not to make a profit? Lucas is in my opinion a mastermind. Yes he has made crap but he has also made some of the best films of all time, strictly my opinion here. Back to the point to call someone a sellout just because thay made it big and then changed the product to try and stay big is ridiculous. Movies are big business and alot goes on that we never hear about. Decisions are made that are beyond even the creators control or even the producer sometimes to be sure the product sells. The bottom line here is according to most peoples definition evey successfull person in Hollywood is a sell out. Since I got way off topic here I'll sway back. I am glad that this happened to a major hollywood figure maybe it will make them think twice about how secure a dvd should be.
i'm so tired of not being able to see this stuff cause the server went down. slashdot should start caching the page so everyone can read the article. i want to know how to get free stuff too. not that i don't already know how and do it regularly. it may be wrong but i found faked id badges for major tech firms and publications(sony, ms, wired, pc gamer, etc.) really rack up the stuff. i actually got a free 32in TV from sony after bsing with the guy in the booth for 30 minutes and convincing him i was a tech reviewer at cnet. yes its it lying and conniving but hey i like free stuff and karma is over hyped anyway.
