What is - in your opinion - the single most important, necessary evolution of GNU/Linux systems to help them become a commodity in the enterprise arena?
I'm sorry, did you even READ Magnetars' entry before you posted...? He said "a couple hours." You state you spend 2-3 (and are working on lowering it.)
All MJ stated was that many people ("Real Engineers" as far as bitgeek's concerned) have a vested interest in their industry. They just jump on the dotcom bandwagon just for the ride, they're in it because its:
1. What they like to do and are interested in. 2. What they chose as their career. 3. What they were doing before the dotcom boom even occurred.
They're more likely to be around right through the ups and downs of the industry, and won't be jumping ship like a rat.
MJ just happened to mention that his wife has a tough time with the concept of getting back on the computer when he just spent a workday on it. My wife wonders the same thing, sometimes, but she does the same thing in her industry, and she understands.
It's amazing that you make a (somewhat) personal affront about losing family and friends due to time spent in front of a computer, while going on to state you _still_ do the same thing, come on, get a fucking life. I'm still not sure how your troll of a post managed a 5-insightful.
While you're right, it's not worth it to be glued to your computer for hours on end when you've got family to attend to, a couple hours after work isn't hurting anyone (did Magnetar even state that he was having problems because of it? Nope.)
Remember, this is a RADIO telescope. Not optical. While I don't doubt the value a radio telescope might have for planetary research, I'm willing to bet you're thinking about something akin to being able to see the individual cells on Pathfinder's solar-array on the surface of Mars from a telescope mounted here on Earth.
Anyone know the _optical_ resolution for maximum "zoom" on Hubble...?
As powerful as a 900Kw laser is, should they mayhap try focusing on making it produce less heat, rather than attempting to simply funnel it away?
I'm sure they already investigated it, but I'd be looking to more applied material sciences to come up with a cooler-by-design laser, rather than cooler-by-dissipation. Less of a power drain that way too.
It is funny actually... during my stint as Technical Mgr @ a Chuck E. Cheese in NYS, the Simpsons arcade game was one of the most played, most profitable arcades we had. And it was fun, Bart's skateboard moves, and Homer's belly flops were hilarious. In fact, it was second only to X-Men (of the time.) The four player uprights were the best (TMNT, Simpsons, X-Men)
Of course, YMMV, since I'm biased and wore the mouse suit before becoming a mgr.
Dude, you need a new nickname. How about "MeAndMyTinFoilHat" ??
I have the opposite view: More broadband spread around everywhere, even though currently in "upscale" areas is a Good Thing(tm). The trend only needs to start somewhere... if they can make it viable (and all the neighbor's kids aren't running 0-day warez fests) then more power to them.
An "attempt" by the movies companies? Ok, let's take a count: how many of you bought the current DVD vs. how many are waiting.
Everyone here talks a good game when they're sitting behind their keyboard, but c'mon, 90% of you went and bought it anyway, didn't you.
Let's have a real/. poll, without the Neal option, and ask 2 simple questions:
Did you buy the LoTR DVD now?
Are you waiting to purchase the final compilation?
This is no fucking attempt, wake up, you've been screwed and gouged in more ways than your puny geek brains want to think about. But you, like me, will keep coming back for more. (well, me only if there's more Liv involved.) </rant>
--furiously awaiting the newline fanboys to mod me down at any second.:)
As an interactive programmer at an AD Agency, I can tell you at this point, Slashdot coverage does indeed become a factor at the more tech saavy ones of us...
lol. Well then, I guess we can safely disregard my question, I appear to have inadvertently answered it myself.
What is - in your opinion - the single most important, necessary evolution of GNU/Linux systems to help them become a commodity in the enterprise arena?
If only he'd made it to 88 hours, he could have travelled back in time and told himself to get up to pee and have a snack every couple hours.
oh wait...
First, I wouldn't "Ask Slashdot"
(sound of pitter-pattering many greedy feet scurrying to the nearest PTO)
Second:
1. Patent new encryption algorithm.
2. Sell to highest bidder.
3. ???
4. Profit.
Ah well, you could always be more philanthrophic than me, and support FSF, but hell, I'm just a capitalist at heart.
How did you know?
You mis-read his statement.
It's "spending a couple hours after work."
NOT "only having a couple hours left in my day."

Swedish-Chef Google search on enigmail.
Great news for enig, but what about the other distros? Will this news carry any weight, giving the other offerings a desire to carry enigmail?
What about ximian support?
It still takes more than running Word to expose the contents of your hard drive though.
True. Running Windows helps.
I remember when we had 1MB drives.
And we had to spin the platters by hand.
In the snow.
And we were happy about it too.

mmmm hmmm.. hard research. I bet.
screw the dinosaurs, give me s1m0ne!
Obviously, that "kid" works for NASA.
Please read Skiboo's reply to my post with important information regarding proper usage of tinfoil hats.
It's actually time to break out the tinfoil hat!
to the story.
"No drinking Redbull for a period of 12 hours before the competition."
hey look! I'm an insightful troll now.
oh boy people, get a life.

I just hope my dentist doesn't toke up the next time I have a visit; I can see it now:
Dentist:
"And now I shall blow a hole in your tooth with this device, which I shall call a 'laaaaaser'"
aaiiiee!!!
