  1. The recall is about to get worse... on Ask the 'Geek Candidate' for California Governor · · Score: 1

If Arnold wins there will be a Total Recall!

  2. Why? Because it matters. on Specs for Sony PSP Handheld · · Score: 1

I have an iPod but half the time it's connected to my stereo system -- dont you realize people will probably connect this to their home systems or friend systems?! If you are paying $300+ for this wouldn't you want the latest in multi-channel sound!? Also, if you can play movies on this device then the ability to know how to deliver the sound is very important even if being down converted to stereo. They have headphones for 5.1 and read this review for a 2.0 vs 5.1 headphone comparison. No, for games it might not be as important but for watching movies on a flight it could make a difference because to me audio is just as important as visuals.

  5. Re:Not a bad thing on Wozniak Unveils WozNet · · Score: 2, Funny

I can see it now: kids will give their ID tags to friends to take to school while they play hooky, dogs will have to gnaw them off before jumping the fence and instead of looking out the window to see if your car is in the driveway you'll look at your computer screen.

  6. But how sensitive and accurate is it? on Wozniak Unveils WozNet · · Score: 1

I'm trying to figure out how useful this would be given the range and the sensitivity. I'd love to see an affordable version of the BATs used at AT&T labs to track movement within my house and personalize the environment. I don't see GPS being as responsive and there are so many other ways to tell if "Johnny made it to school". A 1-2 mile range seems limiting but it could serve as an early wife-on-her-way-home warning system.

We do -- it's called Fireworks and for some things (like web) it's far better then photoshop. I never use PS anyway because ImageReady gets the job done.

My girlfriend was in a car crash with her titanium powerbook and despite the screen being broken and the case being cracked the thing still works. Her car, however, was completely totaled.

  9. What about Dick!? on A Good Summer Read? · · Score: 1

Read Ubik or A Scanner Darkly by Philip K Dick. I saw Gibson at a book signing for Pattern Recognition and was disappointed that he's run out forward thinking ideas (IMHO). I plan on reading PR this summer since I've already read all of PKD.

If you've seen Series 7, Battle Royale or even Running Man -- check out the old book by Robert Sheckley called The Tenth Victim.

Battlefield Earth was mentioned, but I'd stay away from it. If you want a real waste of time you should read the whole Mission Earth series by Hubbard.

A thinking mind will enjoy something like Godel, Escher, Bach or The Bible Code. If you like programming, but don't know that much about how your computer works, pick up the well written and educational book titled Code.

  11. Networks profiting from PVRs on PVRs and Advertisers' Worries · · Score: 1

I own a Directivo, which bundles directv and tivo. Basically its a partnership, and I wouldnt doubt if $2 of the $10 tivo bill goes to directv for use of their signal for guide information and what not. Directv is then buying the broadcast rights to show those channels. In short, these networks are profiting off PVRs in a direct way! Maybe if they saw more of that money that'd shutup.

Another benefit to the networks is giving the consumer the ability to watch more TV thats targeted to their audience. With PVR, there is a siwtch from watching whatever is on to watching whats in your recorded queue. I would think that the ads in these shows would have more impact and be targeted closer to your market then whatever crap you happen to be watching.

I think the real fear from the networks is that eventually most people will be fast forwarding through commercials on the shows, but be forced to watch advertising bought on the PVR networks. I'm going to hate it, but maybe they will show you targeted ads based on your PVR subscription data. If it was smart enough (like amazon's recommendations) this might not be so bad. People will also accept too, sure they have to watch the tivo ad but they can skip all nbc ads.

  12. A few ideas on What Makes a Good Web Design? · · Score: 1

Web design is information design. Overdesign will make the user loose their way, underdesign will look bleek and unprofessional. Your design should package and sell who you are so obviously there is no single design palate thats going to work for everyone. Ask the people who are going to use it what they want and what you could improve on. Dont use a ton of fonts and colors. Make it easy to get anywhere from any page. Use HTML text instead of graphical. Keep your page size under 50K-80K. Good design comes from a good original idea, you arent going to get one by looking/copying other web sites. Try exploring another media (tv, movies, print) to get a fresh idea for the web. Dont make your fonts too small (too hard to read), but dont make them too big (too much scrolling).

  13. How accurate is this data? on Honeynet Project: Blackhat Attack Stats · · Score: 1

Im wondering how accurate this data really is -- if someone sent these IPs over IRC to script kiddies then their stats are going to be way off charts. Once people know about these honeypot wouldn't they purposely attack them? What actions are they taking against these intruders? Sure the project is informative, but I'm more curious what the average person needs to know and should expect. Just imagine how boring their papers would be if no one hacked into their servers. *big yawn*
