  1. Where's the humor? on Feature-Length Matrix Spoof to be Released Soon · · Score: 5, Funny

While it's cool to see what amatures can do on a low budget I haven't seen any fan spoofs of the matrix that are actually funny. Matrix ping pong got a laugh out of me though.

While this may be good new for the average fast-food scarfing american what does it say about Apple as a brand? What -- now I have to eat a mad-cow burger and rot my teeth just to download a free song? Sure, everyone in suburbia is going to see iTunes on a happy meal now but does the general public view McDonalds as quality? Do we view Apple/iTunes as quality? Apple is taking chance on their brand. What's next -- iTunes coupons in my Sunday newspaper?

  3. Re:Biggest problem with anime on Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence · · Score: 0

Why is it that every time the subject of anime comes up on slashdot the discussion inevitable turns to the lack of mainstream acceptance. Who cares? Anime is fine where it's at today. Mainstream demand would probably ruin things. Did Jackie Chan start making better movies after coming to Hollywood? How about John Woo? Now that wire action has been popularized by movies like Crouching Tiger are we seeing more killer asian action movies being released in the mainstream? No, we are seeing Charlies Angels and Kill Bill bullshit. Granted, it's better then Die Hard action but it's no Iron Monkey. No, I wasn't able to go see Akira or GiTS in the theater down the block from me but I was able to see both at an independent theater in my town. I was able to buy both on DVD. I was even able to find GiTS TV series online. So any complain? With the internet and fansub making it easier to get movies not released things are getting better. You should be happy that they are making a GiTS 2 and if you look hard enough you can get it online or wait 6 months for the US version. It'll be worth the wait.

I mean, only one person I know went to see that. The only people I know who read comic books are geeks yet they are making dumb movies like X-Men, Spiderman, and the Hulk. And anime -- don't even get me started. That's more worse then regular comic books.

  7. Re:McDonald's on Simpsons Fan Creates Real Tomacco Plant · · Score: 0

If you read fast food nation you'd have a more factual basis for McDonalds bashing. While their food is far from healthy, they buy more beef then any other source in America. Therefor they have greater quality control and standards applied then, say, the cafeteria where your children eat or maybe even the ground beef you buy at the supermarket. The pressure the public puts on McDonalds has (in small ways) trickled down to change the practice of meat suppliers. Being the #1 purchaser gives them the weight to do so. One example is how Burger King said it will make its suppliers follow guidelines for humane animal treatment ... Two years ago (before BK), McDonald's adopted animal treatment standards after the group (PETA) launched a similar campaign against it. (April 8, 2001)

  10. How is that different then browsing in a bookstore on Amazon's Book Search Hits a Snag · · Score: 0

I understand the concern if people start stealing the whole book but amazon can easily put more constraints on the search. One was would allow an IP address to only view 5 pages of any one book with a given 24 hour period. They already do all kinds of fancy personalization, this would not be hard for them. People copy sections of books all the time, I've paged through books at the bookstore and written down travel info and recipes before. Does that hurt sales? Are they going to shut down travel/cooking web sites because they hurt sales too? This is nothing new. And ask yourself, do libraries hurt book sales? If you really like a book you'll buy it. Its easier then printing out your electronic copy (the binding and cover protect it) and you can take it more places then you e-version (on the bus, plane, train etc). Publishers need to think of new ways to sell content. Why not have a premium amazon search (you pay a little to access 1/2 million books) and you can print out small portions of your needed reference for a small ammount ($2). If it's useful people will pay.

You might be right but TiVo is such a great product that even if they loose marketshare they'll still have those die-hard fans (like Apple is to the PC world). Sure, people might settle for the free cable DVRs but right now most cable users dont use TiVo. It works better with DTV from what I've seen.

Just my opinion but I don't think Friendster is really revolutionary -- just popular. The only thing it has going for it right now is that it's free. Look at AmIHotOrNot.com, it was free and you could look at people and contact them. It was Hot for awhile, now it's Not. Friendster is evolutionary perhaps, better then what was before it but most likely replaced by the next trendy thing. The bar scene isn't going away, personals (online and offline) have been around for awhile they just offer alternatives not a replacement.

I think this might fall somewhere in between Scanners and Total Recall for PKD movies given the feel I get from the trailer. Ben Affleck and the HK action Woo brings isn't the right combination for a stellar Dick flick. I'd feel better with a proven pair like Woo and Cage. Minority Report and Blade Runner relied on the settings and special effects. Arnold isn't the best actor but Total Recall was pretty good based on effects and story. The thing that bothers me is that the setting in the trailer wasnt futuristic. Why is he on a motorcycle and driving intbetween trucks? Perhaps it's not supposed to take place that far into the future but they manage to have invented mind erasing technology. Let's just hope that it's better then Impostor. Maybe I'll be surprised because, yes, I will go give it a try.

The issue here is that DirecTV seems to be hassling people...

They aren't just harassing people here and that's what the problem is. They are suing people for profit. I could handle harassing people (just sending out a letter) or scaring them (suing a few of those people) but this is a witch hunt. DirecTv is trying to get money out of every last one of those 10,000 people and it's a chilling tactic. Just think if the RIAA tried the same thing for everyone trading MP3s! At the same time, if you break the law it will catch up with you sooner or later.

If you did the work for a company then why should you worry? As long as it was sent to you at work and others can back up your claim you should have a fair chance. Actually, you should explain that they need to sue the company, not you as an individual. This is the type of case that people at the EFF are most likely wanting to support. It also goes on to support the people trying to bring on the class action lawsuits -- YES people are getting unfairly sued.

This Lawsuit is designed to crush people like me so that people who have the money to pay the ransom, will do so.

No, not to be an asshole but 99% of the people getting these letters ARE stealing DirecTv. It's not designed to crush you it's designed to make up some of the losses due to piracy: "...(with the) trade in pirate cards clipping along at a multi-million dollar pace. A "fresh hack" could be worth up to $5 million..." With all this money flowing to the pirates DTV was missing out. Rather than punishing or stopping pirates they decided to make money off of the situation. Just think about it, 10,000 people times $3,000 is $30,000,000.
