Agreed. Having random pieces of semi obscure hardware makes it importnat that the kernal (and distro) "just work" for my server and laptop. Both have debian with lots of customisation, but the kicker is my weird ide controller, some laptop stuff, etc, all working. Smoothly. and for now they do.

Thank you for validating my point. Im lucky (?) enough to be dating, well, not a feminist, per se, but a woman very involved/interested in diversity/opression/etc. Lets just say in a year ive learned a lot and my view on women has changed. And just looking through that list tells me few of the women i know would like playing those games (sims aside). She and I dont have the exact same taste in games (i like pretty much all 'good' games, but hardcore racing sims, FPS, and other misc action games are my fav, whereas she doesnt know whats really out there, and gets addicted to a random few of my games). however, i found the list to be pandering, and if i were a woman, id find it insulting. They could have listed the same 10 games, called it a list of "games for non gamers" and it would have been OK. now, they did say "boyfriends too" but come on.
as an aside, i tried to find out if the person who wrote that was male (my guess is yes) because a female working at a place like that wouldnt write an article like that.
btw, female slashdotter who hate sexist stereotypes like me? wow, welcome to my friends list.
indeed. in another post i commented on my feminist gf likes doa 2/3. Go figure! Shes got great at it like she is soul caliber, but then again maybe im just good at doa and suck at soul caliber.
It doesnt explicitly say those things, but it implies them, which is just as bad. However, if you REALLY had no idea what a sig other would like, then here you go. My girlfriend wouldnt be caught dead playing most of those games (ddr most of all). Shes a femeinist who likes playing as the buxom babes in soul caliber 2 or DOA 3. She plays those because they are fun, but who woulda thought?
if you want to have a real discussion about stereotypes in video games, and all the people who defy those, dont post AC.
Oh, and the article in question is a troll. Most of the suggestions are sexist. All girls are not the same. My little sister is a "girly girl" and yet could hold her own in goldeneye, perfect dark, etc on the n64. Now she plays halo ocationally, im no fan, but shes not bad. Funny for someone who doesnt even know what the buttons are named.
And SSX3. My girlfriend (never a gamer at 27 years old) was hooked. Then Soul Caliber 2 (dont challenge her if shes playing as ivy). Shes not as hardcore as me, but she does obsess over whatever game she is currently playing. Right now its the buffy sequel. She calls me up, "how do i get past this one part". No hi or nothing. Ive created a monster.
she didnt know hardcore gaming till gt4 came out though... heh heh.
you speak of the general dislike i have for the basics of reviews these days. if the review isnt gushing about the graphics (or bashing them), then it is impacted by some other factor that shouldnt have ended up in a review by a serious magazine. It seems to me that most of the game journalists are pretty much journalist lite, there always seems to be some angle/agenda they are working from. I just want to know if a game is fun, suffers from any serious flaws, if it does anything new (gameplay wise), and lastly, if it looks sweet or not. I spend most of my time a year or so behind the curve when playing most games (90% of the games arent worth full price to have them RIGHT NOW, imho).
That being said, I miss the vede, he was my favorite part of PC Gamer.
and where the hell is gravy trader. Im tempted to make a small demo of my own based on the old issues i have still laying around.
I used to be a big fan of pc gamer back in the 90s. Right around the time i went to college (2000), the writing started going downhill, the coverage lacking, and the reviews started becoming predicable. lets see, game X had Y amount of hype, so PC gamer will give it Y*Z score. It wasnt that bad (read nintendo power in the past 10 years, see what i mean), but ive come to a point where news is an instant consumable, and i cant wait all month for the next bit of info. The ocational issue of OXM and PC gamer make their way to my bathroom, where they are good for a few moments distraction.
apearently my sarcasam didnt make it through. Apologies for that. I think anyone who mirrors content that slashdot links to does a good service (your link didnt happen to work for me at that particular moment, but i believe that was a problem with the original sites ad server. correct me if im wrong).
anyways, dont let dicks like me stop you. And mirrordot has that awful color scheme that really keeps me from using it at work. (hey, whats all those colors? thats not an IT releated site!)
Yeah, dont get me started on those guys. My parents use direcway (live in the middle of nowhere). We even have the buisness grade connection (ill be damned if i can remember the name). Torrents are useless, but notonly useless, destroy the whole connection for 3k/s up and down. I dont understand it. Thats just the tip of the iceberg. Ive noticed times when i could ping servers via ip, but their DNS was down (frequently). Direcway is a joke, but about the only option for those who enjoy living out in the wilderness.
I still dont get it. Instead, I whipped up a script for myself on my personal website that moves my "interesting links" (not anything id book mark on purpose, per se, but something i can search on 2 weeks later. "what was that one site...") to the web for me (and anyone else with too much free time) to see.
I also got addicted to RSS and getting my news through the sage plugin for FF. Then when i go home from work, im missing my RSS feeds. Wrote a script for that too. I dunno, maybe im just a DIY guy.

That guy is a karma whore who just mirrors articles (Because, i guess mirrordot isnt good enough). Seems like his server finally has had enough.
Well, thats good then. There isnt a gamestop in my area. Ive only ever been in once, and it was smaller than the nearby eb. I wasnt terribly impressed with the selection, but then again, it was one store in a small town.
Since I refuse to shop at walmart and theres no BB within an hour, my local EB is my first and usually only stop to buy games. There are actually 2 in my home town, one that sells mostly new games, one that sells mostly used. I can always find a copy of the game i want used (within a week or two of being released even! saw copies of halo2 used for $40 or so less than week after its debut). So, i hope this deal doesnt (negatively) impact the used games market. While i would love to support developers and buy everything new, i really dont have the cash for that.
Same. However, in my last year at school (03-04), nearly all the machines we saw that came into our tech service dept that had norton were always infected with something. These machines had update enabled, latest defs, etc. Mcafee would always find something, usually whatever it was that caused the student to bring their PC into our office. We started that year with a site licence for mcafee, gave it away free to all students. Now its required because mcafee does such a better job. Notrton used to be king. What happened?
ever since techTV took a dive a year or more ago (Depending on who you ask. It was "always better last year"), Ive been wanting to start some sort of replacement for the geeks of the world who like shows like the screensavers, etc. Shows like theBroken (full of half information as it is) are good, but not really something you can consume on a regular basis. Now, if i really knew how to do what im talking about, i wouldnt be working this job.
Thats a good question. Their writeup sounded like reading slashdot at -1.
Not that i expect a lot from blogs (god i hate that word), but come on, how about something a tiiiiny bit insightful, you know, a reason for existance.

I usually despise conspiracy theories on slashdot, but it looks like taco is throwing a friend of his a bone by linking up on slashdot. Ugh.
Wrong. They were british troops in a british territory (like british troops in america).
Just because the british troops were here didnt make them american. IT was burned by the british. Besides, its easier to blame the brits, they are litterally hundreds of miles away.
Yes, i know, thats why i said 2 euros. I guess it was supposed to be the template "exchange rate" joke about canada, then a weak dollar joke on the us. Guess i coulda had better execution.
wait, why the fuck and im replying to an AC? Waste of my time

no, im not a history geek, just someone who thinks canada is funnier than it really is
