Agreed. Having random pieces of semi obscure hardware makes it importnat that the kernal (and distro) "just work" for my server and laptop. Both have debian with lots of customisation, but the kicker is my weird ide controller, some laptop stuff, etc, all working. Smoothly. and for now they do.

Thank you for validating my point. Im lucky (?) enough to be dating, well, not a feminist, per se, but a woman very involved/interested in diversity/opression/etc. Lets just say in a year ive learned a lot and my view on women has changed. And just looking through that list tells me few of the women i know would like playing those games (sims aside). She and I dont have the exact same taste in games (i like pretty much all 'good' games, but hardcore racing sims, FPS, and other misc action games are my fav, whereas she doesnt know whats really out there, and gets addicted to a random few of my games). however, i found the list to be pandering, and if i were a woman, id find it insulting. They could have listed the same 10 games, called it a list of "games for non gamers" and it would have been OK. now, they did say "boyfriends too" but come on.

as an aside, i tried to find out if the person who wrote that was male (my guess is yes) because a female working at a place like that wouldnt write an article like that.

btw, female slashdotter who hate sexist stereotypes like me? wow, welcome to my friends list.

My girlfriend wouldnt be caught dead playing most of those games (ddr most of all). Shes a femeinist who likes playing as the buxom babes in soul caliber 2 or DOA 3. She plays those because they are fun, but who woulda thought?

if you want to have a real discussion about stereotypes in video games, and all the people who defy those, dont post AC.

Shes not as hardcore as me, but she does obsess over whatever game she is currently playing. Right now its the buffy sequel. She calls me up, "how do i get past this one part". No hi or nothing. Ive created a monster.

she didnt know hardcore gaming till gt4 came out though... heh heh.

you speak of the general dislike i have for the basics of reviews these days. if the review isnt gushing about the graphics (or bashing them), then it is impacted by some other factor that shouldnt have ended up in a review by a serious magazine. It seems to me that most of the game journalists are pretty much journalist lite, there always seems to be some angle/agenda they are working from. I just want to know if a game is fun, suffers from any serious flaws, if it does anything new (gameplay wise), and lastly, if it looks sweet or not. I spend most of my time a year or so behind the curve when playing most games (90% of the games arent worth full price to have them RIGHT NOW, imho).

That being said, I miss the vede, he was my favorite part of PC Gamer.

and where the hell is gravy trader. Im tempted to make a small demo of my own based on the old issues i have still laying around.

I used to be a big fan of pc gamer back in the 90s. Right around the time i went to college (2000), the writing started going downhill, the coverage lacking, and the reviews started becoming predicable. lets see, game X had Y amount of hype, so PC gamer will give it Y*Z score. It wasnt that bad (read nintendo power in the past 10 years, see what i mean), but ive come to a point where news is an instant consumable, and i cant wait all month for the next bit of info. The ocational issue of OXM and PC gamer make their way to my bathroom, where they are good for a few moments distraction.

Ive noticed times when i could ping servers via ip, but their DNS was down (frequently). Direcway is a joke, but about the only option for those who enjoy living out in the wilderness.

Since I refuse to shop at walmart and theres no BB within an hour, my local EB is my first and usually only stop to buy games. There are actually 2 in my home town, one that sells mostly new games, one that sells mostly used. I can always find a copy of the game i want used (within a week or two of being released even! saw copies of halo2 used for $40 or so less than week after its debut). So, i hope this deal doesnt (negatively) impact the used games market. While i would love to support developers and buy everything new, i really dont have the cash for that.

We started that year with a site licence for mcafee, gave it away free to all students. Now its required because mcafee does such a better job. Notrton used to be king. What happened?
