In this application it serves no purpose unless the case is situated at a height where microphones might be. If it were a studio window, the angle would break up sound reflections and minimize standing waves in the room. In "proper" studio design, parallel surfaces

If SUSE took 12 hours to install, you are doing something very seriously wrong.

I wouldn't necessarily point the finger at him, although it's a safe bet he took the "everything" install option.

To me it sounds like he probably had a bad HD.
By default YaST checks for bad blocks. If the disk set-up portion of the install takes more than 10 minutes, it's because badblocks is marking out sectors.

"Everything" + bad HD can definitely == f'ed up system in > 4 hrs

I couldn't tell you about the windows side of things, but the patches sound decent to me. You can use the same GUS patches timidity uses if you like.
As far as "command files for midi devices goes", that falls under the capture and replay of data.
The closest you can get to equating anything midi with sound is the GM spec which is basically a static look up table for patches.

For the folks complaining about the S/N ratio..
I'll admit the AD/DA converters on the Live aren't tops, but I'd recommend anybody complaining about S/N ratio on any sound card should mute all the inputs before taking measurements. Analog CD/phone/aux input cable can have a lot of induced hum.

in fact, does less sometimes (no midi support).

FWIW The Live does MIDI under Linux. If you use ALSA it does SoundFonts(which is what you most likely mean).
I'll be pedantic and say MIDI has absolutely nothing to do with sound. It's a way to capture and replay performance data and communicate between devices from different manufacturers "."

  8. Re:Same wine, new bottle on Money in the Music Business · · Score: 1

Do you have any idea how much a professional grade studio costs to build and operate?

It's not a question of putting a mackie console and an ADAT in an empty room with a dozen Shure SM57's.
We're talking 100K+ for *designing* the space. Construction costs are much more. A *used* SSL console costs almost a hundred K without the automation computer. A new one is substantially more. Then theres outboard gear (doesn't matter if the channel strips are loaded with VGA's you still need outboard gear). Microphones aren't cheap either. Large capsule condenser mics that are currently produced can easily cost several thousand (Although there are plenty, like the AKG414 that are less than a grand). Vintage mics like a Neumann U87 hold their value and actually go up in price. All this shit needs to be cabled together which is not cheap. Studio equipment is also high maintenance. It's not like you don't have to spend money keeping the shit working. New equipment also needs to be acquired on a regular basis. To have a viable studio, you need to have large capital outlay at least every 5 years. Granted leasing is always an option, but it's still not trivial. Staff also needs to be paid (don't tell me about interns).

My point is, even if the record company owns the studio, it's still an expensive proposition and it's a separate business that has it's own profit/loss.

Read the YaST license sometime instead of spouting off something you picked up here.

Only this licence gives the Licensee the right to use reproduce, to
distribute or to amend YaST or works derived from it.
    1. Usage
YaST and SuSE Linux may be used for personal and commercial
purposes if the copyright and licence terms of the installed packages
and programmes are observed. The use of YaST, even if a modified
version is used, does NOT exempt in particular the Licensee from the
duty to take due care with regard to the licence terms of the
packages or programmes installed through YaST or works based on it.
    2. Processing
All programmes derived from YaST and all works derived from it in full
or parts thereof are to be filled on the opening screen with the clear
information "Modified Version". Moreover the operator give his name on
the opening screen, stating that SuSE GmbH is not providing any
support for the "Modified Version" and is excluded from any liability
whatsoever. Every amendment to the sources which are not conducted by
SuSE GmbH are deemed to be a "Modified Version". The Licensee is
entitled to change his copy from the sources of YaST, whereby a work
based on the YaST programme is created, provided that the following
    conditions are satisfied.

    a) Every amendment must have a note in the source with date and
operator. The amended sources must be made available for the user
in accordance with section 3) together with the unamended licence.

    b) The Licensee is obliged to make all work distributed by him which
is derived as a whole or in part from YaST or parts of YaST to
third parties as a whole under the terms of this licence without
    royalties.

    c) The amendment of this licence by a Licensee, even in part, is
    forbidden.
SuSE GmbH reserves the right to accept parts or all amendments of
a modified version of YaST into the official version of YaST free of
charge. The Licensee has no bearing on this.

So you can do what you want, short of charging royalties, but have to make it clear that the version of YaST you distribute is modified.
SuSE also contributes much to XFree86, ReiserFS and ALSA.
Sure, they don't distribute ISO's but you *can* do a network install via FTP even though it's a well kept secret.
If you don't care for SuSE, that's cool, but next time do a little research.
