On average, lossless compression can do 2:1 ratio, so that's 20-30MB out of 300MB worth of wav. I'd say 7-10% is rather impressive considering WinRAR recognizes audio formats and does optimisations on them. Try comparing against ZIP or something.
Furthermore does RAR allow you to stream the audio? Seek (sample-accurately)? Error resistant (a small error won't affect the whole stream)? Can you play the RARs in your favourite audio player? Well I guess Foobar2000 can , with it's zip/rar support but then it has to decompress the whole (10MB/minute) track before being able to play it, while it can play a FLAC directly from any point in time of the track.
I was considering one of this for a system to playback my DivX/XviD CDRs. However the tests only include DivX 3, DivX4 and the 0.91 version of XviD, all of which use only the MPEG4 simple profile. I would definitely like to know if this solution can handle advanced profile MPEG4 with the later development versions of XviD and pro versions of DivX5, both of which utilises the more CPU-intensive operations of Quarter-pixel, Bi-directional frames and Global Motion Compensation.
For those who are interested, there is a "Purist Edit" of The Two Towers floating around the Edonkey network. The quality isn't that great, being a rip of a rip squeezing 2 hours and 15 mins into 1 CD.
The purpose of the edit is to make the movie follow more closely to the original books. It's amazing the work the editor has done by selectively removing scenes and rearranging them - without messing up the sound synchronisation. Now there are no longer any elves in Helm's Deep, Faramir is a good guy again, and the ents aren't idiots anymore.

WTF. This generalisation about East Asia is completely uncalled for. Last I recalled, RIAA, MPAA, Soviet Russia, Adobe, Microsoft, Anderson Consulting, Rambus and Enron are ALL NOT from East Asia.
Did you even read the article? This has nothing to do with theft, lies or deceit. So, some motherboard and capacitor manufacturers found a way to save money (as opposed to making money illicitly) by using cheap alternatives. That they backfired was unexpected, but its their lesson to learn. The only thing illicit was an individual who stole IP and sold the formula. That individual is hardly a corporation.
And where do you find more honourable people than in Japan, East Asia?
Not a problem, just insert iddqd, idkfa, idspispopd, idbehold or whatever into the T9 dictionary and you only need to press 43373, 43532, 43774777673 etc.
Although the main XviD site was taken down for 3 months, the community has still been going strong, testing and debugging the codec. You might want to check them out at their forum
In latest news, the U.S. government stepped in and effectively end the war between the RIAA and Napster by paying both parties. This action has cleared the way for the music industry and file-sharing pirates to work together.
Although VP3 didn't quite perform that well in Doom9's codec comparison test, I think there is still a lot of room for improvement. What's so special about the codecs which perform well? Why, 2-pass encoding of course, something which VP3 didn't have. Now that VP3 is opened, I'm sure we'll see 2-pass encoding being hacked in soon and odds are the quality of Theora encodes will be able to match those of DivX3-SBC, DivX5 and XviD.
for any legal system yet. It just hasn't been tested in the court. The SCO cases is supposed to be the first test, but that might not happen anyway.
Nope, office hours are almost finishing in Asia, but North American is only starting to wake up....
Parent is probably a troll, but I'll bite.

Cool! A new RTS where you have to out-micro your opponent and manage your economy to whore more slashdot karma points!
riiiiiigt. sure..... allow only 13375p33k through.
I haven't heard of a war for quite a while.
Oh, you mean the war against SARS?

Ogg Tarkin is Xiph's experiment on 3d wavelets.
Hmm... looks like this archive has been delinked from Xiph's mailing list archives page, but it's still alive and kicking.

...to announce a release date of THIS year, considering that they haven't even gotten Condition Zero and Team Fortress II out of the door yet?

Bets for the end of the week, anyone?
"especially in east Asia."

good point.
Do you think we can find one of those camouflaging Austens in one of those ghost stations too?
2) Showed off what has been unanimously voted "My next laptop" by half of my company.
Which one do you mean, the really hot and nice chick on your lap, or the astro?
SpamAssassin now includes Bayesian filter which you can add to the many other rulesets. This is in the CVS 2.50 version though.
Not a problem, just insert iddqd, idkfa, idspispopd, idbehold or whatever into the T9 dictionary and you only need to press 43373, 43532, 43774777673 etc.
BTW, the current unstable version 2.50 of Spamassassin also utilises a Bayesian filter as one of the rulesets. Pretty cool.

...I was wondering why anyone would want to name a robot a "MORON"
I think this Hot Rod configuration gives way better value for money. Pretty damn good system for $1600.
