Moveing water is cleaner. No batteries to muck around with. One generator instead of two. No inverter. There is a water pump. However the water pump is significantly simpler then a generator.
Pumping water up as energy storage is a method used by power generation companies.
but they basically take the power in and put it right to the motherboard and components.
This is incorrect. Standard computers use 12v, 5v, 3.3v, -5v, and -12v power. 5v and 3.3v supply the majority of the power used. Additionally the 12v as supplied by cars and boats is not 12v, it can be anywhere from 10.5v (mostly dead) to 14.5v (chargeing). 12.66v is the actuall full charge potential of a lead acid battery. The power from an engine altenator is also not nearly clean enough for use in a computer.
A 12VDC power supply as discussed by the parent is a DC-DC converter. Typically the DC input will be inverted (converted into AC) so that a transformer can be used to generate the various required voltages. After the transformer the power supply is very similar to standard switching power supply found in computers. A good DC-DC power supply will be slightly better then an inverte and standard power supply. Typically either will be equally efficient.
A car is a really terrible generator. Most have trouble keeping their own batteries charged. An inexpensive generator will do far better.
The original poster should really figure out what they plan to do for power first. Depending on the power source they may not have to compromise.
Solar cells sound great in theory, but in practice leave a lot to be desired. Especially if the cabin is not located in a desert with lots of sun. Even if sun is plentifull it is hard to show that solar cells plus a bank of batteries are more environmentally friendly then an old fashioned disel generator running on dead dinosaurs. A properly installed generator running on biodisel with heat recapture, for hot water and heating, would be better. Although expensive a fuel cell generator (as posted elsewhere) is also worth looking at. Again heat recapture can be used. If the fuel cell is the propane type, the same propane can be used for cooking, refrigeration, and additional heating. Hydro is also worth looking into if there is water nearby. Bonus points for useing a windmill to pump water back up to the resevior for reuse.
You probably should have read the articles. The scream was orginally recorded in 1951. You post implies that the scream was original to Star Wars. Ben Burtt deserves credit for nameing the scream and giving it cult status.
The PM (prime minister) is appointed by the Queen via the Governor General. As the Queen's representative, the Governor General is the Canadian Head of State. Legally the Governor General can refuse to appoint the PM selected by the ruleing party. The last time this happened things did not work out for the Governor General. As a result the Governor General is now basically a ceremonial role.
The PM dose not have to hold a seat (ref King 1925). A PM who does not hold a seat cannot sit in the house of commons. This PM can only observe the debate from the gallery. A PM without a seat loses a lot of other priviledg as well.
A PM, or other party leader, without a seat cannot take over another member's rideing. All Members of Parliment must be elected. However an elected member can relingquish their seat. This forces a byelection in that rideing allowing the PM to run. Typically party leaders, and Prime Ministers, win byelections.
Despite popular misconceptions, in Canada voters vote for members of parliment (the person). Voters do not vote for political parties, or Prime Ministers. In reality Canadians have always voted for political parties. Recently Canadians have been voteing for Prime Ministers.
All of the above, and the parent post should be covered in a basic civics or political science course. It is sad to see the level of misconception here.
Certain encryption and DRM sections of code would still need to be locked.
The phrase "security through obscurity" was coined specifically for the practice of hideing cryptographic algorithms. As has been shown, trying to hide crypto code does not work.
In my utopia world all code would be available. It is not going to happen though. Most companies are incapable of understanding how it is possible to show the code and make a profit.
It is already a pain in the ass. Many laptops now ship with built in wireless. So far it has been possible to disconnect the antennas. But it has been impossible in most cases to disable or remove the WiFi completely as the wireless card is also the ethernet and modem card.
Not only is it a dupe, but the submitter knew it was a dupe. I guess trolling the comments isn't enough. Now the little ankle biters are trolling the editors.
I don't agree with everything they write, but overall it is a good list. One of their central complaints is toys marketed at younger children, but based off of movies or tv shows marketed at a much older audience. Unlike other groups, the Lion and Lamb Project seems to be more geared towards educateing parents about the dangers of violent toys and games, then legislating "violent" toys. A common complaint seen on/. is against parents who allow their children to play violent games rated M for mature. Here is have a group that agrees, and provideds parents with education regarding those issues.
That said this group may be involved in other activities that I do not agree with. I only took a cursory look at their web pages. But this is not yet another group who hates video game violence. Rather this is a group that hates violence marketed at children. A subtle but important distinction.
You probably have a legitamate complaint for the FCC.
prefabs are great
on
Pre-Fab Homes?
·
· Score: 4, Interesting
From a process engineering (geek) point of view you can't beat a prefab house built in a factory. There is much better control of the process and allocation of workers. For example if the frameing is finished early the electricians can start early. It is also easier to train a framer/drywaller/painter (which the trade unions hate) who can be quickly moved around as needed. If a house is running late it is possible to work 24hrs instead of only durring dayling. The quality control is also going to be better as a knowledgeble foreman can supervise many homes at once. Also the house designer or someone with similar training is probably onsite and can be called upon to decipher the drawings.
Anecdotal evidence shows that locally prefab houses are of much better quality then regular built homes. The better process builds a better home. By "anectdotal evidence" I mean the 2 prefab houses I know of had no serious problems. Whereas 7 other new home owners have had significant issues from cracks in the wall, to no insulation in the atic/roof, to improperly installed hardwood floors. It is possible that the local home builders are simply incompetent.
Second Life looks to be a much better "game." Stephenson's Metaverse is often refrenced. Second Life looks to be closer to a Metaverse then There.
Second Life seems to encourage player content and player control. It is interesting how players are rewarded for makeing good content. Players are able to charge other players fees for products, land, and access to land (services). There are monthly stipends with bonuses for high, player generated, ratings. There are tools for radically altering a characters apearence, and building almost anything. The scripting language looks to fairly powerfull. Players can even alter terrain.
I find it equally interesting that I was able to learn about Second Life through there own online documentation. Second Life seems to be quite open about what there "game" is. Whereas most links on the There website require an account to access.
Second Life looks to be a very ambitious project. It will be interesting to see if they can pull it off. I am quite interested if the balance of player control will work, or if Second Life will degenerate into a trollfest like some many other services online.
Agreed. It is important. Not only do few people know how to change the font size, sites that are not designed with a large font size in mind don't display well.
I hate having my back to the openning ("door") of my cube. My colleague prefers having his back to the openning as he is easily distracted. Design a cubicle layout where the main workstation can be moved to accodate either.
Use the seven foot or higher cubicle walls.
Design the floor plan such that cubicles do not open onto major hallways. This can take a bit of thought.
Remove all computer speakers.
Remove all speaker phones.
Have a lottery for the cubicles. As the name is drawn from a hat the worker chooses their cube from floor layout. (This is not always possible. I worked with a dept that had personality issues. The manager tactfully choose the layout.)
I think the binge eating is a problem with Atkins. By deprieving your body of food that you like you end of bingeing. I suggest that both she and you switch to a more balanced diet. Remove all junk food from the home. Do the grocery shopping together. It is much easier to face a problem if you both face it together.
Binge eating can also be a sign of stress and/or depresssion. The solution to that is far more complex.

No one can usurp a seat. To get a seat you must be elected by popular vote.

I think that within a few years, cable providers will be offering on-demand programmint[sic] out the wazoo,
This has been said and repeated many times for the past two decades.
The NSA has used a mix of commercial and inhouse cryptography for a long time. For example DES and RSA.
The only thing remarkable about this deal is that it is with a Canadian company.
I think most diodes have a significant voltage drop (1.5V or more IIRC)
Common silicone diodes have a forward voltage of 0.7v. Germanium is only 0.3v. You are probably thinking of LEDs which start around 1.4v (red) and up.
