From time to time I like to snipe. It can be a fun challenge to find the right spot to pick off opposing players. I also recognise how unbalanced sniper rifles are in most FPS.

The unbalanced game play is the real issue. More often then not it is easy to play a sniper and rack up huge kill ratios with no real skill. Too many game maps are sniper havens with long clear lines of fire. Once entrenched it can often be near impossible to remove the sniper. A few snipers can quickly slow a game down making it boring for all players but the snipers. Snipers are rewarded for making the game fun for themselves, as opposed to contributing to the fun of all the players. In online games insuring that all players have a good time is probably the most important aspect of the game to get right.

The costs for the phones in both markets are priced "as the market will bear." Basically Canadian providers charge more because they can.

The Star Wars Lego seemed more expensive, but the models used a lot of pieces. I suspect the license was a modest cost.

LED lights can also win if you want directional lighting, but often more efficient lighting with a reflector will work just as well. In the science class room I see the argument either way. On one side: more math practice is good. On the other side: the purpose is to teach science, sometimes the numbers get in the way.

In university a calculator is irrelevent. The purpose is to teach theory. The numbers are just window dressing. I wouldn't want to be in science without a good number cruncher though.

Equally annoying is to have a post attacked by a horde of weenies who didn't RTFA, or even the post to which they are replying. These weenies rattle off the standard zealot lines without any thought to what they are writing. To say that there is one /. "groupthink" would be a mistake. There are several. These highly polarised groups leave little room for moderates and interesting discussion.

I disagree that posts are modded on merit. I read seldom a +5 post where the author read the article before writing a thoughtfull post on the subject. More often well rated posts simply echo a popular opinion. On occasion an article will be posted that does not fit any of polarised views. Only then will you see interesting posts and discussion.

I did not wish to comment on the parentheses. In general I feel parentheses are used poorly, and should be avoided. You are missing the bigger picture. I don't think anyone would argue that using email, im, and irc for impersonal communication (addresses, url, meeting minutes) is necessarily bad. Although even in business a 2 minute chat in the hallway can get far more done then any amount of email. IM, irc, and email are also an excellent tool to communicate with friends and family who do not live near you. At issue here is text messages replacing face to face communication between family members living in the same house.

Real face to face communication is very important for children (and teenagers) to socialize properly. Impersonal communication whether email, IM, or a written letter allow the communicators to ignore emotions. This is the reason some people prefer to use letters to convey bad news. However, ignoring emotions is usually not a good thing regardless of age. For teenagers in particular, who are still developing emotionally, ignoring tough emotions like sadness and anger is very bad. It is also far easier to lie through text then it is face to face. The NYT article puts a positive spin on interfamily text messageing ignoring years of counter research showing how important face to face communication is. To say: "the [instant] messages are helping to break down the interpersonal barriers that often prevent open communication." is missing the much bigger problem of way those barriers exist in the first place.

I think that is your point right there. It is a good one. Most teenagers will go to great lengths to exclude their parents from their life. Allowing this to happen is not good. Teenagers often need guidance from their parents. Teenagers need real human interaction to socialise properly. Allowing IM to replace face to face communication is a symptom of a larger social problem.

IM/email has its place. Enabling people to communicate over long distances on a regular basis is a good thing. Using IM/email to send urls and other digital content is using the right tool for the job. Allowing family members to better ignore each other is simply not good.

The circuit you describe can be used for small loads. A computer is going to require a larger more complicated supply. An example. Figures 2 and 3 show the heart of the DC-DC conversion. This circuit has an output of only 3.3v and 10A (33watts). Additional output stages (fig 3) in parrallel could be added to generate the other voltage levels. Ofcourse you would probably have to beef up the input stage to supply more then 30watts. This gives a good idea how complicated DC-DC powersupplies can be.

I do not dispute that a regular motherboard can run off of a battery. Motherboards are not designed with low power in mind though. A generic computer (without display) is typically going to burn 100watts or more. This is considerably more then most laptops with display.

It is possible to run off of battery as you describe. I don't see it as viable in the long term. You would be surprised how quiet some of Honda's generators are. The EU3000 in particular produces only 58dBa which is quieter then most air conditioners. But neither portable generator or car based battery chargeing is going to work for anything more then casual use (weekends). A proper installation of fuel cells or other generator is needed. We haven't even touched on the power requirements for drinking water.

If anyone is looking for a generator to power a cabin on the weekend take a good long look at the EU1000, EU2000, EU3000 from Honda. Very quiet and long run times.
