I guess you haven't read the FAQ. You have to smoke crack when you moderate. That's what I do when I have points. I always get meta-moderated "fair". That or it's just the vodka. I dunno.
Pushing an image is not an option because the ISPs do not own the modems.
OK,
your ISP does not own *YOUR* "modem". Yes, I then agree, for them to blast you something like this would be wrong (and probably VERY bad for your connectivity). I will not disagree with you there, but, for a lot of other people that "rent" their "modems", this is a viable option for the ISP.
Hint: investigate and think before you post...
Perhaps you should look at it from other angles as well...
would this mean new firmware for every router/DSL modem on the earth? honest question
Terchnically, yes, I suppose it would. I mean here it's easy for me to cd/usr/src/linux and add support for it into my kernel, compile and reboot (OK, OK, and play with my iptables rules as well, but...). But it's not that easy with all those devices. I suppose it's possible that the ISPs could blast a new image at the user when they are connected, though, assuming that the devices are flashable.
Having easy access to test kernels will make it much easier for them to qualify their products against 2.6, allowing them to get their products "blessed" for 2.6 as soon as it's generally available.
Although I 100% agree with you, I have to throw this monkey wrench in:
as it's generally available.
Generally available and Generally accepted are two vastly different things. It all fine and dandy that Linus blesses the forth-coming 2.6.*, but what about MDK or RH or SuSE (or my personal favorite, Gentoo...:-) ) or whoever? When will the "masses" get to use the new kernel on their Desktops that they just downloaded (or bought) the ISO's for?
The trick is to NOT use KDE/Gnome and kill openoffice, gimp, acroread, realplayer, xine when you do not need it.
For YOU and a lot of us Geeks around here (myself included), those are accepted options. But this is about the average Joe Six-Pack home user. They need to easily type up a letter to mail Aunt Sally on her birthday and not have to learn vi. They want to watch movies sent to them. They want eye-candy. They want to stream audio and video.
This is stuff I'm sure you're aware of, but that sentence just doesn't apply to someone like my grandma for instance.
# cd/usr/src/linux
# make menuconfig
# make dep clean modules bzImage
(assuming all's good)
make modules_install install
The scripts have been able to install the kernel itself by itself for quite a while and also detect lilo or grub or whatever. I have no idea why people keep telling the n00bs to cp./arch/what/ever/
Well, the 2.4.21 kernel was (in reality) the RC-8. Look at the changelog and see if any of that applies to you. If so then yes, it's would be wise to upgrade. If not, then it's your call. This is why the changlog exists...

You do this: YOU DON'T!
You're sitting in your cube hammering out some code for whatever company project you're working on and suddenly you realize that the code you just slapped together would be perfect to help [insert OS app here].
What do you do?
Do you take the (now) IP of a company project and give it to GNU and do it over the company wire? Do you do the (technically) "Right Thing" and not contribute that code at all? Do you mix the two and think of another way way to code the exact some thought, just in a different way (on the company's bill)?
I can't answer that. This is now a moral decision. Not an economic or even IP one. It is *YOU* that has to decide if any of the above (or ones I've missed) are "right" or not.
That is so not insightful... Goofy moderators.

On my XP laptop, it's 948k for the PATCH. I don't really know how big teh full blown DX9b package is, though.

Sure you do. What are you talking about?
Sure, but what about the rest of us?
Ummm... You keep using what you need to use to do whatever it is you want to do?
What's so hard about that?
I think ive mispelled every word in here.
/me hits you with a clue stick hoping that it will work.
You could've typed it into a word processor first, spell check it, then paste it here...
