"Erm, I've had '42' thrown at me by plenty of people who haven't read the books, don't actually know what they're referring to, just that it's got something to do with the meaning of life and they want to appear clever in a serious conversation when they have nothing to say. They piss me off. It's never been a 'secret code' as far as I've been aware."
I've had the number '42' thrown at me by life. I find it amusing how often that number occurs in my life. For example, the number on baseball jersey, underneath my company name, is 42. It was given to me by the coach of a team we sponser, who has no idea what 42 means:)
"The trailer does make it come across as very, MIBish."
I keep hearing this from people who have seen the trailer as if it's a bad thing. DNA was upset when MIB came out because he felt they borrowed his ideas very heavily, while his movie was still being rejected by the studios.
Since having Marvin not have a gun would be completely consistant with previous works, they decided it was not in the spirit of the inconsistency of the previous works. Therefore, nothing you read or heard (or have seen) in previous works will be there. As a matter of fact, they're going for such inconsisntancy that the movie is actually a remake of Silence of the Lambs, just to make sure there is no remaining consistancy whatsoever;)
"I swear that I will never again pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, nor will I allow my kids to. At one time it was an important symbol of ideals I treasured, but it is painfully obvious that it no longer stands for a republic that believes in freedom and liberty for all. I am ashamed of this kind of behavior. Hopefully someday, things will change and I may believe in it once again."
I'm pretty sure you just violated some provision or another of the patriot act. Just sit tight, and the police will be along shortly to arrest you, detain you on foreign soil, and refuse to give you access to your lawyer (less your attorney be arrested for providing expertise to a suspected terrorist)...
You think I'm joking now, so mod me as funny. But if these small abuses are not stopped now, then there will be nothing we can do later. Our second ammendment rights have been erroded enough to make sure of that.
"I would be very disappointed if the movie failed to achieve the level of inconsistancy that we have all come to expect."
However, being consistant with the book (or BBC TV or Radio series) would be completely inconsistant with the trilogy's inconsistancy and would therefore be inconsistant making it consistant with the history of the guide which would be totally inconsistant, so we can't have that. What I demand is inconsitancy with everything, including the previous consistancy of being inconsistant. I demand that the movie be completely inconsistant with the books, while also being inconsistant with the history of being inconsistant. Now that we have that straight, I think I just figured out the Ultimate Question to Life, the Universe, and Everything, so expect the universe to be replaced with something even more bizare.... again...
"We used to say the same thing about electronic dossiers--that storage was so expensive there was no way to keep all that transactional data forever. Now they can.
So they can store it. Can they find it through all the noise?"
Sure they can... All they need is two hours to craft the perfect search string in Google's Desktop Search...;)
"I've noticed that in the last few years (maybe it's just my perspective, I don't know) doctors seem less and less likely to actually listen to their patients."
I agree, but disagree. My family doctor will do nothing for my wife that she doesn't suggest herself. I went to the same doctor with pain in my knees. He examins them and they make a ton of popping noises while he is doing so. Then he says he can find nothing wrong. He'd be glad to order x-rays, but he's sure there's nothing wrong so they would be a waste. So, I continue to live with the pain in my knees that I've had for 20 years.
Luckily, my wife sees a specialist for her diabetes. Unfortunately, that doctor does not believe her when she says that the oral meds are what cause her to have chest pains, even though those pains only occur when she's on oral meds. She stops those meds, and the pains go away, but the doctor gets upset when she stops taking those meds.
More on-topic: Good luck, Patrick. I hope things turn out well for you... I fondly remember the day I downloaded the A series disks for Slackware 0.96 and installed them... Changed my life forever:)
"On the bright side, those who have paid legitametly are probably having no problems."
Except that Valve admits that some of the people (they claim the number is small) that are being blocked have purchaced the game. I have no problems with them blocking the pirates, but to block people who have piad for your product (or service) is a bit draconian, even if it does violate the EULA. I thought the courts ruled EULA's aren't valid many years ago. (shrug) Oh well... Good thing I'm not a gamer, or I'd be a bit more pissed about it.
"You know what? Please don't mod me troll, but do I wish USAians would get over this terror thing. Countries like the UK and Spain have had to put up with terrorism and the the threat of terrorism for decades, but they haven't developed a culture of fear, and it has not stopped them from getting on with their lives as normal. This 'but what would the terrorists think?' automatic reaction to just about everything is starting to get a bit old."
Don't worry. November elections are near. Hopefully the culture of fear that has been cultivated will end with Bush's presidency:) Not that I think Kerry is any better, but I'm getting tired of "terrorists this" and "homeland security" that... I'm no more or less safe than before 9-11, but I have less liberties than before. I wish they'd quit using the victims to get themselves (re)elected:(
'Who sees the next big thing in radio as "and now, BoiBand9000's latest hit, brought to you by the kind, friendly, law-abiding, just-shy-of-saintly folks at Sony"?'
Or worse... After every song, two minutes disclaimer after every single song... In which case, I think every paid-for song on the air should include "No sheep were hurt duing the recording of this song" as part of that disclaimer... Unless, of course, sheep *were* hurt during the recording of said song;)
" Whether you think the IndyMedia incident was a harbinger of things to come or not..."
It's just history repeating itself. Remember Operation Sundevil, Steve Jackson Games, etc? It was a scary time to be running a BBS, for sure. Especially if you ran one which covered the fringe topics, even without actively participating in them. I don't believe I made it through that time period without once having my equipment seized;)
I was thinking the exact same thing. The BBS community is still quite alive and well via telnet, but it isn't quite the same. When the BBS scene was more localized, there was always the chance that some you'd meet some random person on the street and already know them from the BBS scene. Not much chance of that happening these days with the telnet BBS scene.
Isn't sco.com pro-SCO already? Need they register a new domain name to make it a point that the company is, in fact, pro-themselves? I guess they had nothing new to say, so had to do *something* to keep themselves in the news.
" In 26 years of using POTS, the only thing I can recall even approaching an outage is very occasional "circuit full" messages on long distance calls on holidays, and I haven't even heard those for over a decade"
I suffered more downtime with my traditional POTS from SBC than I have from Vonage.... And SBC's customer service was *much* worse because they had the "We're the only real choice you have" attitude. I think I shocked them when I cancelled them completely.
Anyone tried going to support.microsoft.com and doing a search with Firefox? You've gotta use User Agent Switcher and set it to IE6, and everything displays perfectly fine.
"On the type 44 cars (Audi 4000 and 5000) the gas and brake pedal are close together to make performance driving easier."
I have that problem on my Ford ZX2. When I first bought it, I had a problem with the engine reving when I was stopped. Since it's a manual, I didn't have a problem with hitting anyone, but it did take me awhile to discover that the edge of my foot hit the gas pedal when I had the brake pedal pushed in.

I'd go one further, and print it on greenbar paper, but that might make it easier to read
