It's a sad day on Slashdot when such content-free bashing comments are rated "insightful".

If it weren't the truth, it may have been modded funny instead...

I miss the days of growing up, hating the Soviets for doing the same things to their citizens. And though they are no longer around, they have won. We treat our own citizens exactly the way we were taught that they treated theirs, and that is why we hated them so much.

"... but have you priced the towers and the infrastructure that SUPPORTS the phone?"

I worked at an ISP that deployed wireless internet access to the town I'm in. Because of cost, we could only lease tower space. What we discovered is that many cell companies lease tower space as well, and because you pay per square-foot on the ground, many of them do not have on-site generators. They bring their generators on-site and chain them outside the fence during an outage because the tower owners do not charge any extra that way. Then, they have to drive site-to-site during an extended outage to keep the generators fuled up. This was difficult during last winter's ice storm, and pretty much impossible during a hurricane.

Not sure if you were trolling or not because of other comments in your post, but there is one important point you are missing in this particular part of your post: (note - I am not the original AC)

If we do not speak out against DRM, then eventually the answer to your question will be "Yes" because eventually all music will be DRM'ed and we will no longer be able to rip our own CDs. We will be forced to use the services that we're not participating in now in order to get our music digitally, or we will be forced to violate the DMCA when we bypass the DRM that is in place. In order to prevent this, we need to let our money do the talking by not buying from those that are pushing the DRM in the first place.

That said, I like the idea of co-location of mirrors of the music providers' servers on campus networks... I just don't like the DRM part.

If you were a child of the 70s and 80s, you were taught to hate the Soviet Union because, among other things, they made their own citizens show papers just to travel domestically. Now, *we* have to show papers to travel domestically. And that's not good enough. They now want to make those papers uniform. All in the name of what? And what would we give up to gain that? A wise man would say that we deserve neither.
